Thanks Creaky:
For some reason I thought that you had to enable the speeds with the software but I guess you are right, the firmware should detect it like any other burner.

one thing i do know is, regardless of settings, make sure to put the blank disc in before clicking on burn so the burning program is aware of the disc's speed settings.

In my opinion no they are not worth it. A 12x burn on Taiyo Yuden media is only a few seconds difference than a 16x burn with the same quality. I hope you are using an NEC or L.G. burner because burning at 12x can cause some pixelation on crappy burners.

I bought the 16X Verbatim that was on sale at Best Buy. I have a Sony DRU 530A (8x) and it only recognizes 4x burning on these DVD's. I also have some 8X Verbatim and 8X Ritek and the Sony recognizes them as such.
Anyone else have this?
Thanks,
Mike

@kkmike - sounds suspiciously like downrev firmware to me.
Download Nero info-tool from here - http://www.snapfiles.com/get/neroinfo.html
Run it, note down the following, and paste here. Here's what mine shows -
click on the drive tab, note down the name of the drive, and the firmware version
EDIT- hmmm, i wonder if this drive is capable of recognising 16x media... hmmm, processing....

@kkmike - snippet from http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=213 (dated from Jan 2004) - Quote: With the competition introducing their own dual format DVD writers, Sony has upped the ante once again. The DRU-530A is one of the first DVD writers to offer 8x DVD+R writing speeds. It can also write to DVD-R and DVD+RW media at 4x and can read DVD's at speeds as high as 12x. Sony has also set their drive apart from the competition by giving it some impressive CD reading and writing speeds. The DRU-530A can read and write at 40x and rewrite at a blazing 24x.
- doubt newer firmware would improve things too much.

@kkmike
might be time for a newer burner if you want to start burning at higher speeds w/ the faster media out now~ i personally own a Sony burner as well, the dru-710a (16x +/- capable)and i can easily burn 8x media @ 12x and the 16x TY @16x (but i would suggest AGAINST burning at that speed- errors might be high going THAT fast :)
as creaky stated earlier, i don't think even the newest firmware will affect your burning speeds much (firmware helps in detecting NEWER media and making them compatible/readable from your drive), it's the internal technology that needs to be upgraded for your particular model if you want to experiment at 12x or 16x on the media~
good luck w/ your future burns

Kivory666,
You hit the nail right on the head. I was having all kinds of media problems with my Liteon (Sony) and as soon as I bought my NEC 3520A 1UF all my problrms with media disappeared.
