I'm sorry to be so dense, I'm another newbie.

OK, I'm looking at the DivX to DVD converter window.

I don't see anything that says "input."

I tried browsing in the Source File window, but it didn't like my VOB files.

Help.

I'm having a similar problem as a few other folks...I've pointed the program to my source file using every .VOB in the folder. It does convert from PAL to NTSC, but I'm not getting any of the other files associated w/ a DVD(.bup, .ifo). i'm also getting the memory access violation when attempting to point to the 1st .VOB file, as described above (Video_Ts.VOB in this case)...any assistance greatly appreciated.
cheers
Joe

DVD PAL to NTSC conversion.
Please forgive my denseness, but my first VOB, is: VIDEO_TS.VOB This appears to be only the menu.

When one poster stated that they chose the 1st VOB, is it possible that they meant, "VTS_01_1.VOB"?

Sadly, this program comes without any documentation. Some suggestion, or assurance that it will convert the ENTIRE DVD, would be helpful.

Thanks in advance. :--)

Based on all the responses and questions about converting PAL to NTSC using this software, I thought I would try to provide a few more details on what I did. Unfortunately, I have already sent the original DVD and the converted NTSC copy back to my elderly mother so I can?t try it again or confirm some details. Please keep in mind that I am a complete newbie at this and I have no idea if this software or approach will work for others or with other DVD's.

I received an old movie "A Town Called Alice" on DVD in PAL format that was sent to my mother from a friend in Australia. Since the DVD didn?t work in her player (although it would on my computer) I downloaded this software to see if I could convert it for her to NTSC.

Through windows explorer, I could see that there were only 2 directories on the DVD: Audio_TS
Video_TS

The Audio_TS folder was empty.

The Video_TS folder had several files ending in *.BUP, *.IFO, and *.VOB

I created a similar directory structure on my computer under a folder called ?A Town Called Alice?.

Using the Divx to DVD converter software I selected the following:
As the source: ?Video_TS\VTS_01_1.VOB
As the target: ?Video_TS\ (on my harddrive)
Aspect: Force 4:3
Standard: Force NTSC 29.97 Fps

I then hit the ?Convert? button and waited until it was done.

The software created the following on my harddrive:

Directory of C:\My Documents\My DVDs\A Town Like Alice

09/20/2005 05:03 PM <DIR> .
09/20/2005 05:03 PM <DIR> ..
08/28/2005 03:10 PM <DIR> AUDIO_TS
08/27/2005 11:07 PM <DIR> VIDEO_TS
1 File(s) 22,008 bytes

Directory of C:\My Documents\My DVDs\A Town Like Alice\AUDIO_TS

08/28/2005 03:10 PM <DIR> .
08/28/2005 03:10 PM <DIR> ..
0 File(s) 0 bytes

Directory of C:\My Documents\My DVDs\A Town Like Alice\VIDEO_TS

08/27/2005 11:07 PM <DIR> .
08/27/2005 11:07 PM <DIR> ..
08/27/2005 11:07 PM 6,144 VIDEO_TS.BUP
08/27/2005 11:07 PM 6,144 VIDEO_TS.IFO
08/27/2005 11:07 PM 59,392 VTS_01_0.BUP
08/27/2005 11:07 PM 59,392 VTS_01_0.IFO
08/27/2005 11:07 PM 1,073,739,776 VTS_01_1.VOB
08/27/2005 11:07 PM 1,073,739,776 VTS_01_2.VOB
08/27/2005 11:07 PM 1,073,739,776 VTS_01_3.VOB
08/27/2005 11:07 PM 566,202,368 VTS_01_4.VOB
8 File(s) 3,787,552,768 bytes

I then used Nero to burn a DVD_R with all three folders and files to something like:

f:\A Town Like Alice\
f:\A Town Like Alice\AUDIO_TS
f:\A Town Like Alice\VIDEO_TS
08/27/2005 11:07 PM 6,144 VIDEO_TS.BUP
08/27/2005 11:07 PM 6,144 VIDEO_TS.IFO
08/27/2005 11:07 PM 59,392 VTS_01_0.BUP
08/27/2005 11:07 PM 59,392 VTS_01_0.IFO
08/27/2005 11:07 PM 1,073,739,776 VTS_01_1.VOB
08/27/2005 11:07 PM 1,073,739,776 VTS_01_2.VOB
08/27/2005 11:07 PM 1,073,739,776 VTS_01_3.VOB
08/27/2005 11:07 PM 566,202,368 VTS_01_4.VOB

As I recall, I did not get the menus, but the DVD_R played successfully both on my computer and on the player.

Not much else I can add, hope this was helpful.

Thanks for your quick reply.

I kind of answered my own question.

I chose VTS_01_1.VOB as the input file. After conversion, I then had 2 VOB files in a folder called, video_ts. It plays alright, but I havent burned it, to play on my standalone yet.

*edit*
Yeah, no menus. Ill keep workin on that notion.
Aside from that, this method DOES infact work. A heartfelt thanks to all who helped educate me.
peace

Help!

When I put the VOB files in the input section. The system says "Invalid floating point operation" . And won't let me convert. Even though I ignored the prompt, and tried to convert the files anyway. It didn't do anything.

All other files work (avi. etc... I just converted a PAL AVI file) except all VOB files won't work. All these dvd files play fine that I'm trying to convert. I know because they play in windows media player on my computer. they are not corrupted or anything. Just won't let me convert the file because I keep getting this prompt.

Any ideas? Possible bug? Microsoft getting wise to us?

I just had a quick question:

Once a PAL DVD is successfully converted to NTSC, is there a downgrade in video quality? I am wondering if a drop in quality may be equated to the actual conversion process, rather then the underlying formats.

Thanks

Well, it worked for me, but I had to select the VTS_06_1.VOB,
which is the first real VOB of the movie I wanted to convert and then I got VTS_06_1.VOB,
VTS_06_2.VOB and VTS_06_3.VOB and the IFOs and BUPs, just
the movie, no menus.
I guess, it would be a different VOB file for different DVDs, depending
what is on them.

Once burned to a disk, my PAL DVD worked on NTSC DVD-player and TV,
but the AUDIO was OUT of sync, video was delayed by a second
or so, which is quite annoying. Nothing jerky, video was perfect
as was the sound, except the out of sync.

Would the new, full and paid version work better?

Hey,
Just got this Canopus Procoder 2 and it worked awesome. Picture quality is great, audio is great. Screw all the other stuff.

However PAL dvd > NTSC dvd takes a while. It's in realtime. But I don't care, the quality is awesome. Just let the program run.

Just wanted to share the word

*Progress report*
I have just tried Canopus ProCoder. This is quite an impressive program.
However, I am sorry to announce, that my results were nearly the same as when I used, VSO DivX-to-DVD.

Again, there are no longer menus. The quality is noticably diminished. The problem may be that I used the "Wizard" rather than exact greater control over the end product.

Lastly, it took over 6 hours for ProCoder to convert this 1.5hr vid. VSO took less than 30min.

I hope that this info helps in some way.

Hi,

Did anyone had audio and video out of sunc? The old rev of
the program does a good job, except that sound is out of sync.
I tried the new release, on a trial basis, and I get a part
of the movie pefect, but other two thirds have audio like
5x the speed. Basically , it unsable for PAL to NTSC conversion...
Am I doing something wrong or forgeting to config something?

It seems some of you were succesfull....

i did this method, but selected everything to be converted. forced 16x9 and NTSC. now my file size is like 14gb (um, yea no fittin that onto a watchable dvd). So, i experimented a lil w/ choosing only the first VOB. prob is i have 2 of them, on starts 1_0 and 1_1 and the other is 2_0 and 2_1. so which would i pick? and whats w/ this huge file size? Is that common?

.....and people in hell want ice water.....

Just tried VSO's DivX to DVD. The quality is not that good. It's pretty fast and good for computer type quality. Not good if you want dvd quality.

Canopus takes a long time, but the quality is better for dvd's, in my opinion. And you could burn straight to Nero.

I'm also experimenting with Song Vegas 6. Pretty impressive program, too. Let's you save in MPEG2, which I think is the same as dvd quality. I'll let you know the results. Also Ulead moviefactory lets you import individual VOB files.

I'm experimenting a lot here. Hopefully one day the whole world will have one region dvd's. NTSC and PAL is a scam.

Just tried Sony Vegas. And it is awesome. Much much better than both Canopus Procoder and Vso DivXtoDVD. The quality is terrific. There is no noticable difference after I converted some files. With Canopus, the quality was excellent. However when the screen would move in action shots, there was be some blurriness.

I'm sold on Sony Vegas. I was wrong with Canopus, however I still like to use Canopus because it gives you all the bup., ifo files for direct burning using Nero. So I still use it a lot.

This is how I did it.

1. Rip files from DVD (get the dvd (vob) files to computer)
Optional 2. Use vobmerge to merge VOB files to one long files if necessary.(just open, put in files click merge)
Optional3. Use mpeg2vcr to save file(s) as mpeg2
4. Open Sony Vegas. Click File>Import Video. Find the mpeg2 or VOB files. Drag to timeline(the area on top). Right click timeline. Go to switches, click Reduce interlace Flicker.
5.Convert

I then used Canopus Procoder to convert the mpeg2 to DVD(gave me all the needed dvd files, ifo, bup, etc...). Burned in Nero. Mint copy. No quality loss. Audio is in sync all the time. I finally have a good insight on this thing.

You could just use IFOEdit to get the ifo, bup files, then burn to Nero (or whatever burning program). But I'm too lazy/stupid to do that. So this worked for me. And I don't mind the wait.

Click here to know what I'm talking about. http://forum.doom9.org/archive/index.php/t-64301.html

Also, I had a problem with Vegas not accepting some VOB files, so I just converted it as mpeg2 through mpeg2vcr, which is what VOB files are anyway. And most importantly, there is absolutely no quality loss and vegas accepts the format with no problem.

Bad points, Takes a loooooooooong time to convert. But the quality is exellent.

First, I am a newbie, thanks for your understanding...
I found a site that shows in animation, how to convert PAL to NTSC in NEROVISION, in a very few easy steps. Also, since my Fr. DVD that I have ordered is in region 2 (though I do have a region free player)I can first rip the dvd in DVDShrink and then import the VOB files int o Nero....Now, what is wrong with this picture....if anything????

I didn't inc it because I thought I read that you shouldn't link to other sights.
well, here it is: www.teaching-tools.com/hosted/nero-PAL-ntsc/tutorial.html
Anybody tried this yet? My dvd will be here in a week...
Also, in response to some other post I saw on another mess. board, therew is a DVD player lisdted that automatically converts PAL to NTSC: Philips DVP642 DivX-Certified Progressive-Scan DVD Player
Avail on Amazon.com for $59. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How can i tell if MY DVD players (I have 4) will also convert PAL as nowhere in the manuals does it even say it is a NTSC player...only that it is region 1 (except my hacked multi-region player)

help

I have tried converting a PAL movie to NTSC. Using DivxtoDVD2 v1.99.21. I think it worked but the outputfiles are weird. I started with the following files
VIDEO_TS.BUP size 12K
VIDEO_TS.IFO 12K
VIDEO_TS.VOB 12K
VTS_01_0.BUP 52K
VTS_01_0.IFO 52K
VTS_01_0.VOB 92M
VTS_01_1.VOB 990M
VTS_01_2.VOB 990M
VTS_01_3.VOB 990M
VTS_01_4.VOB 63M

I tried selecting all the VOB files for conversion but kept getting a floating point error so i deselected the VIDEO_TS.VOB and the files seemed to convert correctly. (higlighted all and clicked convert)
what i ended up with is

the 3 VIDEO_TS files
the 3 VTS_01_0 files
but a pile of VTS_02_ ... files
VTS_02_0.BUP size 62K
VTS_02_0.IFO 62K
VTS_02_1.VOB 990M
VTS_02_2.VOB 990M
VTS_02_3.VOB 990M
VTS_02_4.VOB 990M
VTS_02_5.VOB 519M
THE SAME FOR 3,4 VOB Files. there is even a set of VTS_05 files that end with VTS_05_1.VOB size 80M

If some one could tell me where i went wrong I will try again. Thats how i learn. Try , try, try ,try again :)

In respose to my own previous post...

Yes, I now see that there are many PAL-NTSC code-free dvd players out there..and on Amazon as low as $26.00 for a Dawoo !!!!! BUT the company that sells thru Amazon, North Star Electronics (this and most other dvd players) has some real terrible feedbacks and issues, so I would rather spend $80-$100. for a player from a more reliable co.
1. Since I haven't received my dvd yet, I have no way to test out the NEROVISION/DVDShrink combo way to rip and convert PAL region 2 dvds yet. Has anyone tried this out? What were the results??

2. About these dvd players with converters...are any of the low end ones any good? I will invest $100. or so to have the convinence, but I don't want to speand $$$ for the very few PAL dvds I might want to purchase...
