If all you have are the .VOB files and you want to create a new DVD that will play in a standalone DVD player, or on your PC, then you need to create a new set of .IFO and .BUP files for the .VOBfiles. You can use VOBEdit and IFOEdit to do this. Here is a step by step guide:

will this process combine the VOB files into one file so the movie will play uninterruped just like my original movie did? right now in order to see the whole movie I have to click on each VOB file and it will play on media player off my computer, but not on a stand along dvd player.
I only have the VOB files on my hard drive, I also copied them onto a disc for back up. can I use the disc copy to change these VOB files or do I have to use the ones on my hard drive. I just do not want anything to happen to them in the process.
thanks@

This process doesn't combine the .VOB files into 1 file, but that's OK, because the .VOB files on any normal DVD aren't combined into 1 .VOB either. They don't have to be for the movie to play uninterrupted.
There are usually 4 or 5 .VOB files on a DVD. It's the other DVD files on the DVD that allow all the .VOB files to play continuously, as if it was only 1 file. So this technique will give you just what you want, a movie playing in your DVD player with no breaks or pauses in the movie at all, just like a normal DVD.
If you have the .VOB files on your hard drive, and again backed up to disc then just file the disc away for safe keeping. Work with the .VOB files on your hard drive to create the new set of files to burn to a new DVD. Follow the guide closely and it will do everything for you.

Okay, I do have on my hard drive some bup files when the VOB files were created and I think an audio file and a tso?, will that eliminate some of the steps? The VOB files already have audio and video on them.
THanks!

You'll need the .IFO files too, VIDEO_TS.IFO and VTS_01_0.IFO. Without those you'll have to start with the .VOB files and go through all the steps of the guide to create a complete set of new .VOB, .IFO and .BUP files.
If you have the .IFO and .BUP files for your .VOB's then copy them all to one folder. That would be the format they would appear in on a normal DVD, all in one folder. If a software player on your PC, such as PowerDVD, will then play the movie uninterrupted from that folder then you are OK to burn to DVD. Then just copy and paste all the files to Nero, or whatever burning software you use. Tell it to burn a video DVD with those files and it will create the proper DVD folder for the files (VIDEO_TS) and burn a new DVD.
A video DVD needs a complete set of .VOB, .IFO and .BUP files for a movie. If you're missing anything, you have to start with the .VOB video files and re-create the rest.

hi there, if you just wanna make a copy of your existing DVD's and burn em onto another blank DVD try using dvdshrink 3.2 just google that ok, once downloaded open up dvdshrink 3.2 and insert your dvd, then press the button on DVD Shrink called open disc, then once it has finished reading the disc press the button called backup and choose where you want it to put the files and all then press ok, then once it has finished it should popout asking for a blank DVD disc, then just inser the blank disc and it will then burn the data onto the DVD.
I hope thsi helps you and i apologize if this is not what your after,

I have the same problem you had I believe, I have 5 seperate VOB files on my hard drive and I copied them on a DVD as well and I need them to be put back together to copy on a new DVD so the entire movie plays without interruption, just like the original DVD I had did, but that one got corrupted when I tried to copy it.
What did you do to get your vob's together. Another member gave me a detailed outline of what I must go thru and it is very long, have not tried it yet. Hoping there was something easier.

moonrocks, need your help again. I have all the IFP, BUP and VOB files into one folder on my hard drive. So how do I play all these seperate files under this one folder on WinDVD the player on my computer. I can play each VOB on win DVD if I click on each one, but that is my problem, I need them to play all as one like you said. I tried to highlight all the files and then open with Win DVD but it just played the first VOB and not the rest. When I explore the file and I have an option to "play all" under the video task field to the left of my folder (I am using Windows XP) it says it could not find a playable file?? UUGHH
I hate to have to go thru that long process when I think I have all the files I need, maybe I am just not opening them in win DVD correctly. Please help

I don't use Win DVD so I'm not familiar with it. I use PowerDVD and Nero ShowTime, but, there should be an option for it to play a movie from a folder on your hard drive.
Rather than highlighting the files and then opening with Win DVD open Win DVD first. Then look for a way to select files from your hard drive. PowerDVD calls it "Select Source". Then select that folder and it should play the movie.
Also, you could try using your burning software and just burn a video DVD from all the files in that folder and see if it will play. If it does then you're all set. Use an RW disc if you don't want to waste a new DVD disc.

No, you don't need that audio file. The audio track will be in the .VOB files. You should have only .IFO, .BUP and .VOB files in your folder.

I was able to open WinDVD and then open the files from my hard drive and it did play the entire video, and they were only the VOB files, it would not even let me put the ifo or bup files in the play list. So when I go to burn the DVD do I use the ifo files and bup files too or just the VOB files.
I am using "record now" burning program, but the last time I did that it copied just the file folders just like they were on my computer, and when I put the dvd into my computer it just opened up the files it did not play the movie.
Do I need to find the VTS_TS file on my computer somewhere after I have burned the files to a DVD and then I can burn this file onto a new DVD? Sorry it this is confusing!

oops I mean VIDEO_TS file. One thing I did notice this record now software did not let me tell it to record a video DVD, it just said you are about to burn a DVD, so would Nero let me do this. I now have in one file the 2 IFO and 2 BUP files and the 5 VOB files in one folder, so i can copy and paste those files using Nero and tell it to burn a video DVD?

Yes, use Nero. Copy and paste the 2 .BUP files, 2 .IFO files and 5 .VOB files into Nero, then tell it to burn a video DVD. If all your IFO and BUP files are good, then that should work and you'll have your DVD

okay, great, is there a way to tell if the files are good or not via checking their individual properties?
Thanks so much for your help, I will try this later today and let you know, please check back to see if it worked, I am assuming you get an e-mail like I do when someone reply's on this thread. Thanks again!!!

No, you won't be able to tell if your .IFO or .BUP files are good by checking their file properties. If your .IFO isn't good you could open it up with IFOEdit to try to see what's wrong and edit it. But, honestly, if it turns out your .IFO file is off then I'd really suggest just starting over with the .VOB files and create a new set of .IFO and .BUP files.
Also, if you feel the VOBEdit and IFOEdit method to rebuild your DVD is a little more than you're comfortable with you could try NeroVision Express 3. I know some people join up .VOB files using that. I think if you use the Make DVD option and just add your .VOB files one at a time it would work. It would then create a new set of DVD files for you to burn.
I've never used it for that because I like VOBEdit and IFOEdit. I think you'd get better quality with those, but give NeroVision a try if you need to rebuild your DVD. It's very easy to use.
Hopefully all your current files are good to go and after your burn you'll end up with a working DVD!

Do you mean using DVDShrink to backup a DVD? I'd agree that's the easiest approach but the problem MARYTT has is she's not even sure she has all the necessary DVD files for her movie. Apparently some got corrupted or lost and she's trying to find them again and put them in one folder on her drive to burn.
But you're right, now that she has everything (hopefully) in one folder she could use Shrink.

I tried DVD Shrink and it would not recognize my file format or something like that ALso MOONROCKS, I was able to play uninterrupted on my WIN DVD like we discussed, but when I used Nero to burn and make a DVD video, this is the error I got: "DVD-video files compliance test failed" It said you could continue to burn but it might not read property, I did continue to burn and they were right when I inserted the new burned DVD into my dvd player on my computer it brought up WIN DVD like it wanted to play a movie but said it failed to read it.....So I guess I have to go thru the step by step you gave me the other day. Does this error mean that the ifo or bup files are bad. What about the VOB files, if I go thru this process, is there any chance my VOB files are bad. I can still play them either seperately or in total as chapters in WIN DVD and they still show as DVD movies in the properties section of the files themselves.
Thanks!

Since you can play your .VOB files individually they are probably fine. It's most likely the other files that are corrupt or the incorrect files for those .VOB's.
So you'll have to start with the .VOB's and rebuild the rest. Try Nerovision Express 3 first to see if you're happy with the results there. I don't use it but I know other people like it for ease of use. I still prefer the IFOEdit/VOBEdit option but give Nerovision a try.

do you have a step by step for using the neroversion to do what I need to do, like you gave me with the VOB edit? I assume you can dowload the VOB edit free off the internet?

I don't have a guide for NeroVision, but I just went through the steps to see how it works. It's pretty easy. Start NeroVision, choose "Make DVD", "DVD-Video".
Then "Add Video File". Then browse to your 1st .VOB file and select it. Then "Add Video File" again and do the same for all 5 of your .VOB files. Make sure you add them in the right order.
Click "Next". You may get a prompt saying "You can download Templates..." just hit OK.
In the upper right corner you'll see a "Menu to Use" option where you can select a menu if you like. I chose "Don't create a menu" so the movie would just start playing right away when I played the DVD. Then click "Next". Then it begins to preview the video, just hit OK to continue.
In the upper right corner under "Set the parameters for burning:" you'll see some choices like "Burn To" or "Write to Hard Disk Folder"
If you want to burn to disk right away choose the "Burn To" option.
That should be it.
It seemed to work fine creating a complete DVD from the individual .VOB files I added.

yuh i hope she does get her problem sorted out, but it just seem strange to me if she was just burning herself a ordinary dvd video for example if she were to rent one out and then just make a copy, it would just be as simple as popping in the disc and selecting open, to scan the disc then click backup, and then it will put all the dvd data into the one folder such as the .bup, the .ifo andthe .vts ^^
then after that she insert the disc and she would have a an exact duplicate of of the DVD, but as you said moonrocks, if that still isnt working 4 her, then it baffles me that that there would be corrupt files considering the oringinal DVD works fine ??

thanks Moonrocks, will try that I do remember now that neroversion or maybe it was neroexpress was as part of the Nero 7.0.1.2 that I downloaded. I did go thru some of that process, but not all, so I will use your steps and give that a try. Thanks so much for your help!
Leiongod: This is a DVD that was of our Dolphin Adventure in Cozumel, not one I can just rent. When I tried to Copy it via DVD express copy, somehow during that process, it corrupted my original DVD, there is only a few minutes on the original DVD, the rest is gone, but during that process it did give me the ifo, bup and VOB files on my hard drive. that is how all of this started. I tried DVD Shrink, decrypter, Nero and it kept telling me the files were not good or not recognized etc.
So I will try nerversion and I sure hope I can get my movie back, it was a special one for us.

Yes it was Nerovision (not neroversion) that I used, but I do not think I went thru the right steps. Will keep you posted.
