Or maybe it's that those reports you read are overinflated and the production has only really gone up by a dollar. I still haven't seen figures. Remember you asked what the costs were

according to OPM, the average current gen game costs 3-5 mil to develop and the average next gen game will cost 12-15 mil to develop. Ive always thought $50 was rediculouse for a PS2 game and Ill do the same thing Ive always done for next gen: wait a few months for the game's price to drop.

if the price of games is $5 more than 360 games, i don't think its that big of a deal. it would be nice if pricing was the same, but there are games that are on both systems that will vary in gameplay. for instance; developors behind COD3 have said they are incorporating the tilt functionality in their game, which could be an added experience. $59.99/game would be nice, $64.99/game would be ok, but $69.99/game would be my breaking point. i too will probably end up waiting some games out for price reductions or buy 2nd hand games.

**sry double post*
i would imagine that offering downloadable content (at a price) could help developers recoup costs. hopefully they don't get too greedy and start shortchanging gamers

this was taken from psm sept issue about COD3
"physical , hand-to-hand combat is now a part of the game as well: in moments when it's called for (such as, say, when an enemy soldier attempt to kill you with the butt of his rifle), you're thrown into a first-person melee combat sequence. with a bunch of punches, blocks, and submission moves at your disposal, you'll have to frantically beat him into capitulation. the team claims to also be exploring ways to use the PS3 controller's tilt functionality during these sequences, as well as when driving vehicles. as far as immersion goes, it beats just pushing the X button...."
tilt may not be all that bad after all.

I would definitely pay $5 more for over twice the storage capacity and the hd and internet upgradabilty of bluray disc's.I think people underestimate the textures possible with bluray as opposed to dvd format.

as long as devs are willing to use that extra space, i don't mind paying more (within reason). so hopefully they utilize that extra space

I agree with anubis66, if the prices for games are that ridiculous then I?ll wait 1 to 2 years to get the ps3, but knowing sony and their marketing, they are smart enough not to do that. That?s why they're making 2 versions of the ps3 as well. They don't want to give people more then they want or can handle; enforcing technology some people will never use. So they want to reach out to several people in the gaming world and make it affordable for all types while still providing top of the line technology.

even at $500: its a great deal really but most parents cant tell the diffrence between a sound card and a stick of ram and would think that PS3 is a rip off and end up getting their kids a Wii, which will cost half as much.

@alafossb anubis and I both know that it will probably be $59.99 to $69.99 for a game. There was a leaked publicity stunt that had the info I think. Here's a link right under "developer support and price point" it has it between $60 and $100 however retailers are told by sony way ahead of time what's really going on and as you can see they are charging $66 making hade right on the money.

I put no stock in pre release pricing but you can better believe best buy knows more than us.

Games being priced between $60 and $100... now that's just ridiculous. We?re talking about games..not digital cameras or ipods. I understand 60, and somewhat 66, but once you get going at 70 and up that's when I can say for sure that (as bad as I want a ps3) I can wait a year or two before purchasing one. Don?t get me wrong, im not trying to be ignorant or unreasonable. Marketing this new technology is going to be an interesting thing. I am on sony's side all the way for next gen and have been impressed at what they have been conjuring.

and i guess another thing we should realize is some (NOT ALL) games will be much larger and bigger in gameplay and interaction, so you're getting more your moneys worth (now that Blu-ray is out and has so much space for developers to work with). i just know for a fact that my ps3 game collection is going to be alot smaller then my ps2 and ps1 XD.

Well i was in another convo and we were talking about the production costs of games. One of the points that came was that games are now more expensive than ever to produce (some have movie size budgets).
What might happen is that we'll have less games being published than in previous years for a few years into the next-gen.
Reasons being:
1 Publishers and devs have to spend more time making game and they might not want to expand to fit the demand it would cost too mouch for some because they wont be seieng the benifits untill all the games in dev at the time of expansion are released.
2 It just costs too much to release a sequil the one year later and just half ass it to make a quick buck. If it fails then you're screwed fully
3 Games will have to be of the highest quality or you will be going under so you really have to take your time.
So your collection might just be smaller but your'll be playing more than you did before because games will get longer and deeper and more immersive with better replayablity.
