well I was just browsing aroung the web and it turns out the Dreamcast still lives!
Sega is still selling Dreamcast systems through their online site. Theyve also still have online for phantosy star online. Believe it or not but there are still dreamcast games beeing released such as "under Defeat" which was released this past March 2006. And IGN has relaunched ignDreamcast as they take a look at all of the Dreamcast games.
So in a way the Dreamcast has been slighly resurected to this day.
Peace Out!

Quote: I hate to burst any bubbles.I love sega and genesis brought me so many memories but It's not going to happen peeps. They filed for bankrupty with dreamcast and there game line up hasn't done well on the market.
Tycobb you took the words right out my mouth. The DreamCast was a good system but most of the first gen games had the system Maxed out. When DreamCast was made, it only had a short life span. Why because Sega ran short on money for production.

Noo.. Sega f***ed up by not having copy protection on the disc, and once the pir8s found out they made copies & sold the games on Ebay. And Bernie Stolar screwed up the system launch.

What people would do is buy the Dreamcast game & then sell it on Ebay. When enough people caught onto how the method worked, they stopped buying games & used P2P & websites to share them. This was before the days of bittorrent but during Napster/Limewire/Hotwire.

Game sales don't effect sega to much anyways because it's the dreamcast that they were selling. You can't pirate an entire dreamcast system.
The exception would be sonic or some of the other exclusives.Ps1 was a hack fest, ps2 was a hack fest but it did'nt effect sony at all, same with xbox. They were in debt up to their eyeballs and couldn't borrow anymore.I had one and wish it wouldn't have happened but it did.

System sales is where company like Sony & Microsoft make there money. They get a small chunk from game sales.Dont hold me to this because i cant remember the source but like 2 years ago i read that Sony would only makes 5% off every game sold & 75% off every systems sold.I'm going to find that link.

definitely must read this: http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=8832 sorry man, but that's bASS ackwards. When the PS3 comes out, $ony is going to lose $100+ per system because of expensive hardware. Games, whatever they end up costing, will be a fixed price for awhile (Industry people guessing $49-$69 for A+ titles). After awhile the games go in the bargain bin, then $ony gets paid less per title. That's how the licensing agreement works for them. I've heard GameSpot.com talk about it.
As for existing system license, $ony makes a lot when a new 3d party game is a hit & makes much less when the game flops. But their license always makes them SOME money. A bad title can really hurt a company but if they sell OK they break even.
When the PS3 comes out, $ony is counting on their 3rd party license games selling well & their own $ony studio titles. A 3d party game like MGS4 could make $ony millions in profit. But first, they'll sell systems @ loss until their hardware costs go down.
There is an added risk w/BLU-Ray. If Blu-ray sells poor for non-gamers, it could keep system prices high because of economy of scale. The more Blu-ray hardware they make, the less is costs to entire company.
Blu-ray flop to average consumers = bad times for $ony

my name is xhardc0re, have some respect when using someone's name on AD.
The license agreement w/$ony is similar on PS2 & PS3. $ony sold their PS2 for the first 2 yrs @loss. Why? To push software sales. No software sales, $ony loses money. DreamCast sold systems but did not sell enough games, and Sega made bad business decisions. If you look at this, you'll understand that GAMES make a system profitable, NOT hardware. Not until the company manufacturers enough hardware to build it cheaper, with smaller parts. Like Sony has been doing with v1-v15 of the PS2.

Actually xhardcore has a point. Sony doesn't make money from PS2 and PSP system sales:
http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6357073.html
For the quarter ending June 30, 2006
Quote: Sony?s game division was hit by lower PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable hardware sales, leading to the unit recording a 26.8 billion ($233 million) operating loss.
Thanks to LCD flat panels, digital cameras, and Vaio PC's Sony turned a profit last quarter. Like xhardcore pointed out, things probably won't change much when the PS3 comes out.

If PS3 sells well, and so does Blu-ray, production costs will drop faster. $ony will find a cheaper way to make the system. Software costs will remain fixed, but hardware can fall. The more games that sell, the more $ony makes off license fees.
So there's a lot that could happen. If Nintendo's system is a huge hit, and $ony hardware sales are low, they'll lower their price. Which gives them a bigger loss. If the Wii still continues to sell better, $ony would be in a tough spot. Take another $100-150 hit to be competitive, or hope that Nintendo doesn't make enough good games.
I'm h4ckz0ring the PS3 i buy. If it wasn't for that reason, I'd buy a Wii myself :P

But they all do sort of the same thing, and that is rearrange what you thought was real, and they remind you of the beauty of very simple things. You forget, because youre so busy going from a to z, that theres 24 letters in between... You turn on... tune in... and you drop out...

@ easushi that was for 1 fiscal quarter. They take a loss at first but make it up along with a profit later when the technology comes down.We all know this and have said it many times here. That quarter is understandable now that xbox360 is out.Ps2 has made profit.I do aggree that most profit from ANY console comes from accessories, software, and services. That goes for any console.Microsoft still hasn't turned a profit for xbox or 360.
If anyone honestly thinks dreamcast went under due to pirates then why hasn't ps2,ps1,xbox,xbox360,nintendo gamecube seen any losses when they were hacked WAY more then dreamcast was.Pirates only contribute to 1% of most software sales and 3% of very popular games. It's a drop in the bucket.
I love the link posted by anubis this is what me, him, damondash, xyqo and the others said all along.

i would LOVE to see sega make a new consoule i LOVE their games but i dont think it is practical i mean it is in a ggod spot developing games why would they wanna make everything exclusive and ruin all their relationships? i think a bigger prospect for the next consoule company is macintosh.

Think differently anyone?
Maybe you should read this link and the most important statement is the last one at the bottom. Then come back here and try to convince me about what kind of profit losses are due to pirates..

Dont get us wrong though piracy is wrong and illegal and bad for any industry. But if paracy didn't take down shipping it's not gonna take down any aspect of entertainment

LOL they actually spend more trying to fight pirates in the courts than they make from that 1% sales loss. The fact is guys like 50cent(rapper) are the most pirated people around and yet he's the biggest seller.
Like I said on that link it's like free publicity a guy who pirates 50 then goes to his friends house and talks about how tight the album was that friend goes out and buy's the album.
You have to spend something in order to make something, it's the cost of doing bussiness.
