ddlooping, I've just downloaded the DVD Shrink V3.0 beta 5 and just wonder is it still a freeware to use? As for the spliting that you mentioned, just the main uncompress movie without Menu and X'tras?

Yes, onestop, it is still freeware to use. :)
As for splitting to 2 discs, you will lose the menu but you can select whatever else you want to include on each disc. ;)
The new re-author feature is quite powerful, and you can even use it to copy titles from different DVDs on the same disc (and still use "start/end" to crop them individually).

ddlooping, I tried the DVD Shrink v3.0 beta and the new auto compression feature is indeed more user friendly but when I try the re-author function, it looks very weird with everything blank and not like v2.3 which has all titles at the right bottom corner. I also noticed that the full disc key which was formerly beside the re-author is missing and the start/end key is not working. Anyway, I tried spliting uncompress movie into 2 DVD+R with v2.3 and the result was superb.

onestop, with v3.0 beta, simply drag&drop titles from the first window into the empty re-author one. ;)
This is a bit confusing but will be changed in v3.0 final release (v3.1?).
You can read this thread for more info:
http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=23468
What it enables you to do is to drag titles from several DVDs (as many as you have DVD drives or already ripped to your hard-drive).
So you can make compilations. :D
Glad you're happy with v2.3/v3.0 splitting capabilities. :)
P.S: the full-disk button is not available because its the mode DVD Shrink goes to by default when you start it.
Switching to re-author opens a new window, so the first one is still in "full-disc".
But as you can see from the link above, this will change back to a v2.3 type interface soon.

Wow! DVD Shrink v3.0 beta was fantastic and is putting DVD2One far behind. The new interface is good and the drag & drop method of re-authoring is also similar to MS Explorer. The splitting movie to 2 DVD+R is also great and I do not need to use the troublesome InfoEdit anymore. Overall, I'm very happy about the new changes and really see no reason of changing it back to the old v2.3 method but probably with some instructions on the changes. Hey, by the way, the help function of both the v2.3 and v3.0 is not working.

v3.0 does not have a "help" section yet (as it is a beta), but v2.3 should have one.
Anyway, glad you like the new version. ;)

yeababy, v3.0 beta5 is better than v2.3 in all respects, but unless there are backups you cannot wait to do, I'd suggest you wait for the final release. ;)
You can always try it and see how it works for you. :)

"...not sure if its worth learning to use a prog a new why when the full version will resort back to the old way...".
It does make sense. ;)
However, the interface will change, but the principle will be the same. :)
A very rough guide to re-authoring with v3.0 beta, in case you decide to give it a try:

not sure whether to ask here or start a new thread . backing up lord of rings 2 towers. putting on 2 disks is the way to go right? 1 disk takes 7-8 compression this would look crappy wouldn't it thanx for any ideas.

actech, there would certainly be a degradation in quality.
To what extent you'd be able to perceive it depends mainly on the quality of your viewing equipment, but I'm pretty sure you would notice it.
My suggestion would also be to split it to two discs. ;)

DVD Shrink is one of thr best freeware programs to ever grace a computer. I live by it 4 or 5 times a day. So far, it's treated over 100 DVDs perfectly!

Try DVD2One 1.20 or above
If you have already got the ripped/unencrypted (not downloaded files) on your HDD. And you do know that you need to rip/unencrypt the DVD yes ?? (Have to ask as it's your first post)
If you have unencrypted files you can run them thru DVD2One and choose movie only or full disk (choosing full disk you need to rip all files instead of just main movie VOB 's & title set IFO)
And which audio/subtitles you want so as to try & get 7+Gb down a bit or the resulting movie is gonna be not as good quality as it could've been.
Depends on whether you like menu & extras really...
There's some thoughts on your comment zb : )-

hahaha you're right ddlooping
I must admit to not even having tested it. I instead reffered to my friend there Chris (Oriphus) to run the test cos he has a 60" Projector & Screen so obviously getting proper results ,rather than the usual of 'well I couldnt notice any discernable difference in quality' !!
Chris's report back was that unless you do deep analysis w/ Shrink beta 5 - then DVD2One 1.20 does a better job...
Which leads me to have no reason to step sideways bro , if it was a step in the right direction (forward) I'd be most inclined to test beta 5 like a madman ; )
Hope this clears up your curiousity m8
