you mean the drop down box for selected drives in Nero infotool? if so it says the name of the drive E:/HP dvd writer 740b

Oh I know what you meant. I had it set to cd/dvd and switched it to DVD and still nothing..

OK this sounds like a bad drive to me along with those error's. Have you tried cleaning the drive? There are standard lens cleaner discs you can get just about anywhere or just a little air blowing on the inside could do the trick.

You could also try another burning program just to see if it is Nero?

My bad. I was thinking Nero 7. Which drop tab do you have selected at the top right of the Nero 6 StartSmart window?

yeah.. ill trt cleaning it.. the thing is I can burn audio no problem and data.. for some reason DVD wont burn..thanks for the help.. ill try cleaning it and see what happens.. the drive is fairly new. I have a new one on the way as it is so.. lets see.. I think it may be my IDE cable..may get a new one to test that also.. my HDD are SATA so

bbmayo was right in suggesting you try another burner software. Since you have the files on the HD, see if you can burn them with ImgBurn. If Video_TS you need to use Build mode to build the ISO and burn. If ISO just burn it. 2 software apps not working would indicate the drive has a problem. I've seen CD/DVD drives only burn CD before, so that's nothing new. It would be easiest if you had another drive to try if the burn with ImgBurn fails.

As for my question, I know it appears simplistic, but sometimes people forget to change the mode back to DVD or a friend resets it and they don't notice. Just checking.

OK.. i bought a new burner and new IDE cables.. since then i have had NO issues burning.. Still not sure what the problem was but it is now resolved. thanks for the help everyone

Glad to see you got it fixed. As I mentioned before, having a drive going bad and burning only CD or CD and DVD RW and not R format is nothing new. I've had to replace drives for the same reason. A person can use them for reading and burning the formats they'll still handle. I don't think I'd rely on a faulty drive as an only drive though.

Darn I hate it when I am right LOL ;-)

I really do in this case because I hate to see people having to purchace new drives, but sometimes it happens and I am glad you got it all sorted out :-)
