DEP has no major problems until one loads software that it marks as un-signed (possible virus) that's what happened with DVD Shrink after start-up it would not run except in SAFE MODE. After finally figuring out how DEP in SP2 works, it is very easy to override by shutting it off or by marking the program okay to operate in WIN XP.

DEP never had a message flash on the screen, after starting up DVD Shrink it would appear for a second and then disappear without explanation. Just another Microsoft hidden feature for your protection!!!

There's the problem, there's a bunch of software not approved by Microsoft for XP that runs on XP. Like I said, I've had XP since it came on the market and still no need for DEP. Like some other things in Windows, it can be more trouble than its worth. I suppose it's another of those personal choice items. If you do a poll, I'd suspect you would find most users don't bother with DEP.
