I have used DVD SHRINK for many years on various computers and recently I upgraded 2 computers to faster CPU's (2400 speed)and memory (2Gb) and on those 2 computers only I can not open this program?

It will not start up!

I know they have not updated this program since 2004 for legal reasons, but it seems that that the slower computers with less memory seems to work okay.

Anyone else out there have this problem?

Yes

About 50 times on both computers and it installs with icons and clicking on the program in everyway possible way, nothing happens.

I know the program has not been updated for a few years, so maybe 2 Gb ram and 2.40 GHz AMD 4000 are causing a problem.

I deleted the program on my older computers with AMD XP 2700 & 2800, Semperon 3000+ CPU's and they installed as usual and work properly.

Could start in safe mode and see if it runs, then use the likes of Startup Cop to list and disable programs that are loading at startup.

Have the same programs on all of my computers and the non-start up is with the 2 newest faster machines. I also use DVDFab Platinum and it works good and it is still being updated regularly. I just have gotten so use to DVD Shrink and just like the way it works.

I will continue shrinking with my older slower machines without any problems and use DVDFab on the faster ones.

Thanks all for your input.

After spending a few hours reading about graphic card / program problems with faster type video cards like my installed Radeon 9550 PCIe card, it seems that in SAFE MODE lo-res graphics, DVD Shrink program opens and starts up normally, but again not in normal start-up mode.

I will experiment with an older PCI video card next.

I run Shrink on a fast dual core AMD. No problems. Processor and RAM shouldn't be an issue. Lots of people run Shrink with faster processors and plenty of RAM without it acting up.

What operating system do you have on the computers that are having problems?

I have an XP Pro system, 2GB RAM, and a dual core AMD. The Shrink software works perfect. You've developed some sort of software interference which isn't normal. I don't think it has anything to do with your hardware and if the XP OS is installed properly, it isn't there either. Good luck.

Well after much trial and error it came down to the DEP program (Data Execution Prevention) in Win XP Pro that must have locked out the start-up of DVD Shrink. It is now working normally on both newer computers!

Again thanks for all your help in this matter. I have never had this problem before but I will now check out the DEP if it happens in the future!

Joined After Dawn forums just to say THANKS :-) to "hnl" for saving my day...I too have wasted the last "3 weeks " of my life trying to figure out why all of a sudden DVD Shrink will not run on my PC and it turns out It's Microslop's DEP (Data Execution Prevention) Program in Windblows XP SP2 Corporate....
The DEP program is preventing DVD Shrink from running, which explains why you'd see it in task manager flash up, then close...
You have to either go in (Click, start, control panel, system, advanced, performance-settings, data execution prevention) and turn it off all together or (tick the "help protect all programs except box") like I did click the "add" button and browse to the program you're trying to run to exclude it from the protection.
A-G-A-I-N>>>>> THANKS :-) hnl <<<<

It's good that you found a solution - but it's troubling that if DEP is preventing the program from running, that it isn't generating an error message to draw attention to the fact - or does it, but you have to guess where it is?

I did not get a windows message at all and I must have did the format and windows reinstall at least 15 times !?!?!?!
This is just cqazy why it would all of a sudden start doing this...Must have something to do with the new hardware and the way windows detects it???

Which method did you use in the DEP screen (disable, or, Allow these exceptions)?
Did you reboot after you made these changes?
You must reboot for DEP changes to take effect.

This business with Data Execution Prevention is more an exception than the norm. DEP has to be selectively initiated by the user at some point for it to be in effect. The normal installation of XP has DEP in a default off setting. I started out with XP when it first became available and to date have had no issues with DEP, nor has anyone that I know. Anyone not having initiated DEP shouldn't run into that problem with Shrink. Anyone thinking it may be the problem should go ahead and check, but it's not going to be the magic panacea in every case.

Hey PacMan:
I agree, It's not going to solve every case, but, I did quite a bit of research during my time of trouble, and, here's what "I" found. I did a clean install of Win XP SP2 on a spare, blank hard drive, Shrink would not run, never got any DEP messages from windblows or anything, tried several other things, codec packs ETC, no luck. So, I went into the DEP and it's turned OFF, I thought, What-The-Heck, it's worth a try and set DEP to allow dvdshrink32.exe, did a reboot and presto>>>>Shrink is back working??????
Can't begin to explain why but that problem kicked my butt for 3 weeks till I could get it figured out....

Over the last several years, your case is the only one I've noticed with DEP effecting Shrink and I've seen a lot of them. ;) I'd say it's probably one in a million or more. Glad you got yours taken care of because that's one solution I don't think would be easily picked from the hat. That being the solution, you should have been having permission problems with other programs as well. There's nothing particularly unique about Shrink. In fact, it's probably more compatible with more operating systems than a bunch of the newer software.

A very good explanation on DEP WinXP SP2

Data Execution Prevention (DEP) helps prevent damage from viruses and other security threats that attack your computer by running (sometimes called executing) malicious code from memory locations that only Windows and other programs should use. This type of threat causes damage by taking over one or more memory locations in use by a program. Then it spreads and harms other programs, files, and even your e-mail contacts.
This type of "attack" is very common and that is why Microsoft have introduced DEP into Service Pack 2 for Windows XP.

Unlike a firewall or antivirus program though, Data Execution Prevention DEP does NOT help prevent harmful programs from being installed on your computer. Instead, it monitors your programs to determine if they use system memory SAFELY. To do this, DEP software works alone or with compatible processors to mark some memory locations as "non-executable". If a program tries to run code?malicious or not?from a protected location, DEP closes the program and notifies you with an warning message.
Software or Hardware DEP?
There are two types of Data Execution Prevention "Software Enforced" and "Hardware Enforced".
Most users reading this article are going to be using Software Enforced data execution prevention - which is available to any machine running Windows XP Service Pack 2.
Hardware enforced DEP is only available (as of writing this article) to users who have machines based on the AMD Operton 32 or 64 bit processor, or the AMD Athlon 64 processor with NX (no execute page protection), or the Intel Itanium processor with XD (execute disable bit).
Where Can I Find DEP On My PC?
1. On the My Computer icon right click with your mouse and choose Properties. (My Computer can be found on the desktop and/or the Start menu depending on how you have your Windows XP setup.)
2. A small window will have appeared called: System Properties. Look for the "tab" along the top called Advanced, now click it.
3. Now look for the section called Performance and click the button called Settings.
4. You will now see a new window appear called Performance Options, click the tab along the top called Data Execution Prevention and you should get the same window view as the image below.

Fig 1.1 - The DEP tag of the Performance Options Window.

By default Data Execution Prevention is turned on for Windows programs and services only and for most users this is fine.
However, you can gain more protection by selecting the second option and DEP will now work for ALL programs and services on your computer. BUT this is know to generate some error messages as legitimate software can conflict with DEP.
If this happens, you get a warning dialog box on your screen informing you of an error and the software you are trying to use will not start.
If this was a nasty piece of software lurking on your computer then DEP will have done its job. BUT if it happens to you when trying to work with some software you fully trust, this can be a problem, but fortunately there is a solution...
...you will need to tell Data Execution Prevention to ignore the software you want to use!
(Note: The DEP error message should always tell you which software caused the problem and who the publisher is, if you do NOT recognise the information provided then suspect fowl play and seek the advice of a more experienced user/technician....)
Enabling this option can ALSO cause a conflict with some Hardware drivers and present you with a warning dialog saying something along the lines of: (ATTEMPTED_EXECUTE_OF_NONEXECUTE_MEMORY).
If that happens you will need to try and track down updated Windows XP drivers for the Hardware involved - preferably marked "Digitally Signed" for Windows XP
To find out how to tell Data Execution Prevention to ignore the software you want to use read this page:
http://www.updatexp.com/dep-exceptions.html
To find out how to update a hardware driver read this page:

DVD Shrink is the only program that I had trouble with SO FAR!!

Since my system has remained stable for so long, I'll continue to rely on my av software for system protection and not worry about turning on DEP to cause it's own set of problems.
