I don't think AnyDVD - I'm now thinking it really is a Nero issue. So good find.
I could have sworn I did a few w/ the 1st version of Nero 8 - 8.0.3.0 - but for the life of me can't remember which ones - it may dawn on me sooner or later or I'm losing my mind :)

I always let Nero get a version or 2 into a new series before buying in. I didn't try the 8.0.3.0. The 8.1.1.0 was the first try. At first I thought maybe some people were simply getting corrupted installations for whatever reason. Now it appears to be more. That's why I took the time to look it over. If it's only the Shrink-Nero auto burn (Burning ROM), I'll continue to use Nero Express or ImgBurn until the problem is resolved. Since I have the program, I may as well go ahead and use it.

I thought Nero had come out with a program more free of bugs than usual. I should have known better. They're still using consumers as beta testers. I've heard a few complaints about some other components of the Nero suite, but I've not checked into those yet. They're not features I normally use.

As you know PacMan no program is really bug free plus the larger ones like Nero then to have a few more then smaller apps.
You're right too - it also depends on which apps you use and your setup.

So yeah I too wait a few releases with most software when a new version comes out but the price was right on Nero 8 (free -nero program thingy) so I had to try it out.
If it wasn't for that I would have waited a few more versions before taking the plunge :)

But I'll give one a go tomorrow with Shrink - hopefully by it's lonesome.

With Nero 7 I got the discs and I don't remember it having problems like this. Good luck with the burning. Let us know if you hit any snags.

Might be time to revisit VSO's CopyToDVD.

I just realized I had a blonde moment :)
I didn't use Shrink with RipIt4Me - I used CloneDVD instead (one less step in blanking out stuff then vobblanker). Dunh on me :)

So I will use Shrink tonight when I get home. Still need to figure out the ones I did use Shrink & Nero 8 on. Ugh!

Want to borrow my Sharpie? Anytime I use a different program from what I normally use, I write it on the DVD. I've got one beside me now that has Shrink_Nero 8 / PC only.

Sounds like a good plan. It would help when funny things start happening like the current Shrink - Nero 8 Burning ROM situation.

Ok here's an update - I backed up Captivity w/ Shrink by it's lonesome and autoburned w/ Nero 8.
I checked the disc and there is a video_ts folder created with the normal video files inside and it did play in my player.
The kicker is though the file structure of the movie itself is messed up - Lionsgate release w/o all the heavy duty stuff - so that was more than likely the cause - the reviews played then the last 25 mins of the movie started. I probably should have had AnyDVD on :)
I redid it w/ using Clone and AnyDVD (was being lazy :) & all was good.
I'll have to try another one.

So, you recreated the same problem. Thats what was happening on the player I have that opens the problem backup DVDs. I suspect anyone who tries Shrink with Nero8 as the supported burner will get the same until something is done at Nero (Ahead). I was using some older DVDs with only CSS encryption. It doesn't get much lighter. So encryption and copy protection had nothing to do with the software failure. I'm curious how they messed up the Burning ROM and not Express.

Did your bad DVD play okay on the PC? That sort of surprised me.

No I should have added that - it played the same in the pc - the file structure was off - satrted with the previews then jumped to the last 25 mins of the movie. I think that had more to do with the way shrink handled the copy protection.
I will do another one tonight - I'll just use an RW disc this time :)

The disc though when opened in windows did show a video_ts folder which is different then what you are seeing.

I saw the problem 2 different ways, with and without the video_ts folder. I don't know if it was missing the first time due to a corrupted installation or not. Either way the problem burns acted the same way. In both cases the DVD played on the PC but failed on the standalone players. If using an RW does your standalone play them? If anything like I'm encountering, just checking playback on the PC won't show the problem.

Yes most of my players accept RW media.
But dopey me shouldn't use my laptop's pos drive to validate anything - I took the same disc and used a pc and it played fine.

But anyhow I did another one - Talk To Me that I had done that last with Clone & AnyDVD.

And guess what - this one started at the credits! Soooo I was completely wrong on Nero 8 being the issue - it is when auto-burning w/ Shrink.

Again good find PacMan!

It leaves me wondering what Ahead changed in the Nero 8 burning rom. It's a cinch nothing changed in Shrink. ;)

Yeah I write the name of the programs used to do the disc every time, on the disc and in the running word document I list the movies in. It helps in tracking down the culprit if one should arise. I had 2, year old movies, act up that were done with cloneDVD and had to fix them. They were back to back backups.

I too and having the same exact problems and my brother and mother both have Nero 7 and they have no problems and I can play any disc they burn in my standalone dvd player but if I burn it with latest versions of both I can only play it on my PC-- I even reinstalled both Nero 8 and DVD Shrink with Nero first thinking that DVD shrink would set configurations of Nero as it did when my mother installed Nero 7 but it did not help any --- there is definitely some sort of configuration issue between these 2 --- I am actually going to try to find Nero 7 and delete Nero 8 but I am also going to contact Nero because I paid for my version of Nero and they should provide tech support for it--- I will keep you updated as to what they say!

As for configuration, Shrink is calling the Nero 8 to do the burn, it just turns out flawed. Nero 7 can still be downloaded from the Nero site. If you saved your serial, you're in business.

The tech department at Nero suggested I check to see if I had tried to write the files in Data mode. Once I assured them I knew how the software worked, I've not heard from them again. I doubt they support burning with Shrink. I tried saving the Shrink output to the hard drive and burning with Express from Nero 8. That works. So, you're not without means of getting your backup. It just doesn't work automatically with the burning rom. The one thing I didn't try was manually burning the output with the burning rom to see how that works. It's not worth putting Nero 8 back on the system to find out. If you don't mind and since you have Nero 8 loaded, do a backup manually as I described above and burn with the burning rom. I'm curious to see if the backup plays in a standalone when Shrink output is burned manually with the Nero 8 burning rom.

The problem that everyone in this forum is having is not a Nero 8 problem. If you look at your temp directory where your files are being placed before they are burned, it will show that just the files are being placed in this folder. There is no file structure to the rip that is being done by DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15. When you choose the Backup! option on your DVD, there are three options: Burn the files using Nero, Create an ISO file, and Backing up to the Hard Drive. Only the option for Backing up to the Hard Drive contains anything about the file structure. It gives you the option to keep the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS structure with the use of a check box. I don't have this option on my version of DVD Shrink 3.2 for burning using Nero or Creating an ISO file. Thus the default must be to output without the file structure. I first received this problem after I uninstalled my working copy of DVD Shrink. I did this because I had uninstalled my Nero 7 and installed the new version of Nero 8. The burning capabilities went away in my copy of DVD Shrink so I redownloaded it and reinstalled. I haven't had a single DVD work in a standalone since.

People with working DVD Shrinks, where did you download your copy of it? I think the version you have must be pure. The version we have might have been altered? I don't know about what I wrote last is true or not but I am certain that it is a DVD Shrink problem.

Not a Shrink problem cause Shrink hasn't been updated since 2004 and the only variable here is Nero 8.
Plus same Shrink on different pc's using Nero 7 still works. Also if you autoburn w/ ImgBurn - not a problem there either - playback is fine.
Looks more like Nero is cutting the ties w/ Shrink.

Good post binkie. That's what I found using Nero 7 and switching to Nero 8 and using the same version of Shrink. Other supported programs auto burn correctly, Nero 8 doesn't.
