I thought the nand might be a problem so I used someone else's nand dump and ran my own keys through it then flashed it with 4.01 m33, but it still did the same thing. i know it can run ELF's, for some reason it freezes on the gameboot of homebrew and isos and it won't look at the umd

I've run into a similar problem myself. When a UMD is in the system will load it and play the game fine, but while loading the 'PSP' symbol distorts and the I hear static from it.
When I go o the XMB to load a game on the mem stick, it freezes to a crawl unless I'm really quick with finding and hitting x on the game I want. It basically slows as if it were all running in slow motion and plays lots of static. Also, trying to put it into sleep mode for more than 5-10 minutes while it's already in-game freezes the system.
This is a fat psp that had custom firmware. I upgraded to 5.00 in case it was just some sort of program error but the problems are still there.
My g/f dropped this one on the floor here causing the problems. Thankfully it was only the spare one I had to let her use just in case of such a thing happening. Warranty is long gone too.
Anyone run into anything similar? I've tried to be as detailed as I could with it all there.

I tried restoring default settings and it never fixed anything. Same problems persisted. I then tried installing the newest CFW since it seemed software-related. No change.
The system loads and plays games fine except for the initial staticy-crackling as I noted previously. UMDs are included here. I probably should ahve added that to my original post.

i have uninstalled, reinstalled, updated, whatever, it doesn't load games. it can't go on standby either, it loads the browser, videos, music. it can also load pbp's from pandora mode, but not complex one's (games) because the pandora mode is too stripped down

i wouldn't do that, unless we find out if thats the problem, i don't think it is either, because, mine does the same thing with the umd drive completely removed. I read that psp's work without the drive

Add me to the list of a PSP that won't turn on the UMD drive, and it hangs when launching ANYTHING from the memory stick (including OFW updates). It will play the PSP splash screen, then freezes forever with the splash screen displayed. I've tried every known NAND option (reformat, restore IDS, etc). No luck.
I've read elsewhere of people having this same problem. Interesting that a non-working UMD drive and freezing when launching from the memory stick are problems that exist at the same time...

alright then, can you tell me what my problem is?
if the umd is inside when i boot the psp. the psp doesnt boot.
if i put a umd in. then the little loading icon in the corning appears and stays forever.
i cant load games from the memory stick.
i get a 80010013 error.
is it true that i need to have any umd inserted to run games form the memory stick?
i also have a working psp that gives me the same error message when there is no umd inserted.
if that is the case then that may be the problem. if the umd drive is busted then that is why the ms may not be working.

Can anyone confirm that the PSP can launch games from the memory stick with the UMD drive completely removed?

I wish it was that simple on mine :(
I've tried EVERYTHING, including complete reformat of flash, rebuilt of IDS, etc.

My guess of the problem would have been a lens alignment problem. It can easily be miss aligned in a drop, however the connection of the umd drive is pretty hard to pop out, but i am not ruling out that the cause being some motherboard issue. If it was miss-aligned the lens would incorrectly directed at the umd, which might have cause it not to recognize the umd as a official umd or it did not recognize what it was reading at all. Thus leads to it reporting it as a no umd found case. Some drives, you can adjust the alignment with a screwdriver.

how would the problem persist without a umd drive inside?

Darkmastr, I'm having the very same problem, also tried to disconnect UMD drive with no success at all. If MS doesn't worked at all I will think UMD and MS sharing controller and this being broken. But MS will work OK using Pandora and Despertar del Cementerio or Recovery Flasher. It's bizarre :/

i have already told you the solution (this is if your ms is not booting because of broken umd drive)
the ms relys on your umd to work before you can boot games from it.
therefore you just have to tweak some options in the recovery menu (hold r while powering on the psp)
go into configuration and change umd iso mode to m33 driver
NOTE: your umd WILL still be broken but your ms will no longer rely on your umd to work and therefore it will work independantly. if it still deosnt work then you have an additional fault maybe your mobo/memory stick reader is also busted
even if your umd IS working you should always do the above because it saves you battery
this is where i unsubscribe from this thread,
hope this helps,
Mubs

It is not related to the UMD mode you set up on the recovery mode, mub6. No matters what mode you set up, we have the same problem. Physically disconnecting the UMD drive doesn't help.
