problem with this thread as it shows garmoon as last poster on page 20 but there is a page 21 with nothing on it til this post i believe. also after posting, it dosen't always show your new post right away as before so might get a few multi-posting of same post.

The first point of your post is not listed in my thread but is a valid problem, yah.
Hopefully the admins can fix it soon >.<

Yeah during the last two weeks I've had same problem. I thought Ketola fixed it, but it did it this am. The way to get around it is-once you post, x out of the thread and when you reenter thread, your post will show.

Don't exactly know what was wrong, but after a couple of restarts and tweaks things are working more smoothly now. Some queries are still taking quite a while to run, though.

Been kicking the boxes around in the evening (local time, 0:44 AM over here). Hopefully things run smoothly for the next 10 hours or so. Back to the grinder in the morning, smoothing out rest of the rough edges.

I'll try and make some adjustments to forum code tomorrow to make help posts show up right after posting. They _do_ always get posted, unless you get an error, but may take a while to show up on the thread in case there's (unusually) heavy load on the DB slave. Nowadays there's substantial load on the server at pretty much all times.
The problems may also be related to the improved message parsing routines, which might be a bit slow at times. That's why it may take 10+ seconds to post a new message.
The biggest cause of slowdowns in the forums at the moment are the threads with hundreds, or worse thousands of messages. The DB server handling most of the forum queries can't hold the message id index in memory too long. When the index is purged from cache, opening a thread like http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/322699 , which has over 6600 messages, can take a good while.
I've got a couple of possible solutions sketched for the problem, but unfortunately it'll take at least until Friday before they can be tried out.
Until then I will try and do my best getting the databases running more smoothly. The problems seem to have begun late last Friday, when the master database server was rebooted.

dont know how hard it would be to put some sort of message at the home page 1st page of AD stateing there is a problem and posters should wait about 10 seconds before hitting the post reply button and that would avoid the double posting. iv noticed tonight it has been real bad, but knowing of the problem ive been waiting a few(10)seconds and the post go through like normal...just a thought

If some of the problems are caused by threads with excessive post counts, is there any way to for example to cut off the oldest 1000 posts and store them somewhere that can be accessed if necessary but they won't load with the regular thread. Then post a statement saying something like only the last 1000 posts are listed. I personally don't see why anyone would go back that far to read old posts unless important info or guides were listed that were necessary. I don't know much about running a forum but if thats where the problem comes from then you need to cut off some of the oldest posts at some point.

good point there Jerry was kinda hinting to something like that myself just didnt really know how to word it..lol not a fast thinker/talker to say what im wanting to say..lol
once a thread gets over say 700+post put those 700 post in a archive, adn people can go look at it if they want.
besides is there really alot of threads with that many post? i know the docTY thread has like 2500 or sothe old timers and paint the kettle black thread have bout the same ifnot more. i dont think the console threads are up to those kinda numbers yet.... just another thought..

IMHO, the older console boards should be archived and closed for further posting.
Sounds like a plan, lol x)
