I always assumed that I was booktyping b/c my old PS2 ,first version out there, could play it. But I was just recently looking at the final wimdow that pops up before it goes to analysis stage, and the Booktype to DVD ROM is greyed out. It's checked but it's greyed out so I can't choose to ucheck it if I wanted to.

Well I bought it from Newegg.com something over a month ago so I think it's safe to assume it was manufactured sometime in June or August. How would go about finding something like that out.

shakin my head - I cannot belive I stumbled upon this thread - I just had to get the only batch that would not work - I could never understand why I would read so many posts about ppl loving their Lite-ons (which I believe are the same ppl that make Sony's (or vice versa) - i had - HAD purchased a lite-on earlier this year and had to get a refund because of that problem - i just thought Lite-on was a p.o.c. - apparently I just got one out of a bad batch of them made - see now I'm mad - I ended up getting a more expenseive one because of that. Well I no longer have mine - but I have a feeling its the same one ... had me thinking I was doing something wrong when I knew I did it right .... glad I read these posts

i'd had a Sony DRU-700A for just under a year which was in fact a rebadged Lite-on SOHW-832S - it was a right little soldier, fantastic drive, i think i just wore it out. my only other Lite-on experience was a few years ago, it was a dvd-rom reader and it was very picky (can't remember the details) so i went off lite-on after that, until i went for the Sony (but saying that, when i bought the Sony i didn't know it was actually a rebadged Lite-on so wasn't biased).

Anyway, i'm glad i'm not the only one who had this problem cus at the time i thought i was doing something real stupid or my PC was just playing silly beggars

Seriously - me too creaky - I kept thinking to myself - what in the heck is the dang problem - I do this all the time - brand new burner etc etc _ iwas so mad - so I took it back and ended up with a DANG MEMOREX WRITER - Im not overly impressed with it - but its nothing close to the worst I have had either - My Sony is older than yours - its a 500UL (no dual layer action) - its still alive and kicking - have not had any problems - even during times when i would be having problems with every little thing - the sony always came through. I got the memorex after making the mistake of asking the ppl at the store their opinion and I was scared that if I got another Sony I would have conflicting issues since they were the same brand. - I wont ever make that mistake again.

the Sony 810A is a Benq 1640 but don't know if all future Sony's will be Benq or not. i just had a bad run of luck with Liteys and it was enough to put me off but gurnard and kivory666 love their 1693S's as probably do many others, but i jumped ship as it was winding me up and i don't trust technology much so it was easier to try a different make. i did have trouble with my new LG 4167B - it wouldn't do 8x whereas the 4163B i have does.....though i never do 8x anyway so that was enough to make me go back to 4x and now the drive's fine again and i've used it all weekend and watched loads of those burns this weekend too.

computers - pah :)

@creaky
I replaced my memorex burner with an LG HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-4166B with a Firmware of 1.00. The dirve came with an auto update firmware feature and everytime i turn on the pc, the thing looks for an update, but errors out with a runtime error and an out of memory message. I looked at the firmware sites for this drive, and it is not listed. It is a lightscribe burner. I know you changed to LG. Did you have any success with the auto update feature, or did you use it? I am pretty sure my firmware is probably a version or two out of date, but maybe not.
@zhelpz
I wasn't having problems with my memorex drive, i just put it in another PC. I removed it for two reasons. 1. The name memorex now has bad connotations for me because of their use of crap media. 2. I wanted to try a lightscribe burner. All the movies i ripped with the memorex drive came out fine, but i noticed the drive is made in china. Maybe they are producing good stuff, more like cheap stuff, but time will tell if it is cheap and good. I am very happy with the LG.

Yea - you remind me of me when it comes to these buners - I have been through plenty of them - I do have to say there is one burner that I absolutely loved - hands down! It was a samsung ts h552u - it was an internal though - wherein - all the others have been externals for me - That Samsung was my joy - unfortunately when my last comp concted out on me - that burner was in it when it got sent to the graveyard! I have not come across any external Samsungs yet - maybe once I start shopping on some of the internet sites I may come across one for my next upgrade - which will probably be next year - depending on what kind of new technology has come along

@Maxburn - hiya. i hadn't heard of the 4166B. two reasons - one is that i haven't seen it on my fave firmware site - http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php and also cus i'm not into all that lightscribe stuff. as to auto-updating, considering i'm a geek i don't like most auto-update things. my virus scanner is about the only thing that is auto-update, and even then i check that often, as i've seen viruses that mess with your host files/registry and spoof the auto-update of virus definitions and redirect you to fake sites...

i'm more than happy with my LG drives now. here's a pic of the Litey on it's short stay on my PC.. - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/6/208116

Max - if I had known THEN what I know NOW about memorex media - I never would have bought the memorex - I SHOULD have gone with my first instincts and simply got the newer Sony. Of course - when i bought the memorex drive - I was still using memosux blank dvd's too *L*

But as you - My backups are good also - but I just am not overly impressed with it - ya know - its ... OK - it gets the job done. I have yet to try and do any dual layer disks

me too. i'm not interested in dual layer, not just cus of the cost. but the time it'll take to backup. plus i'm not a huge freak on quality. Shrink gives me more than acceptable quality, and i love to watch films for their content/atmosphere far more than the quality. first dvd i think i ever saw was Armageddon on a PC, with surround sound system and it was awesome, however that was many years ago and i now got far too much going on in my life than worrying about quality of all the pixels on a tv screen :)

Hey I found my manufacture date. It was made in JULY 05. So is this thing fixable you think? or will I have to get get a new one. You think Lite-on the Co will do anything about it?

Cheers mate! Maybe this drive is too new to need an update? Anyway i hear you on the auto update feature. I tried it as i thought it might be a good way to make sure your drive is current, but it is a pain in the butt when it doesn't work. Besides, i like to do the manual check. So i will be un-installing that feature. I went with the lightscribe as i love gadgets and new technology. I also happened to have a spare hundred bucks to put into a new drive, and the discs were on sale at 80 cents each. Yeah, i am a consumer, just doing my part to keep the economy alive :). The discs come out great, much better than what i could do with a sharpie. Also i already have 3 printers, and didn't want to add another one just to print discs. Besides, the drive was cheaper than a printer, and it doesn't use ink. The memorex i moved to an old celeron, and i made in to a stand alone burner (never connected to the net). The memorex used to come up with the check mark selectable for DVD-ROM in shrink, and now it acts just like GlueEater's PC. The box is checked but greyed out. Maybe that means it will automatically booktype to DVD-ROM if DVD+Rs are present? Just guessing.
@GlueEater
Does the disc burned come out as a DVD-ROM when checking with DVD Identifier or some other program? Maybe it is booktyping anyway. My memorex burner still comes up with the booktype set to DVD-ROM when using Nero to burn.

Yeah, i got in to the memorex media buying at first also, and that is when i found out about the evil empire CMC mag :)
Sounds like it isn't booktyping it if Nero info tool comes up with DVD+R on that burned disc. You can use DVD Decrypter to id the disc also, in mode ISO read and selecting the drive the disc is in. I also use DVD InfoPro and may wind up buying that program. It does CRC checks on discs, and i think that gives you a better idea if the disc will be playable than a PIO/PIF scan would. If you don't have DVD Decrypter, it is available at AD under the software tab. I find DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, DVD Identifier, DVD InfoPro, AnyDVD, and Nero to be the main tools i use when working with DVDs. Shrink and decrypter are must have programs.

I burned a few DLs with that memorex drive and they came out fine. Went 2.4x and used Verbatims. I used shrink to do the DL, and it was neat to see 100% of the movie fit with no compression, and even have space left over. No burning to the edge on that one. I took LOTR Two Towers exteneded edition and took it from 2 DL size discs to 1 DL getting only the movie in this case. Came out great. I heard that Nero vers 6 has a problem calculating the transition on a DL disc, but DVD Decrypter could be used in a straight ISO read/write operation on any movie if you use a DL, and Decrypter gets the transition correctly.

Hi guys.

Don't give up on your litey just yet. Has any body tried useing the lite-on booktype utility to booktype their DVD+R dvd-rom? The booktype dvd-rom option in shrink is grayed out when I try to burn with my litey too and there is not an option for booktype dvd-rom in Nero when my litey is selected as the burner either but I use the lite-on booktype utility to set the drives eeprom to booktype DVD+R media to dvd-rom and they are always booktyped dvd-rom, verified by dvd identifier. I think you will find this will solve your problems. Here's a link to the booktype utility and there is also a link to a usage guide there too. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441

Mort, in DVD Shrink after you click the "Backup!" button, select your burner as the "Backup Target", then click the "Burn Settings" tab, now the "Book type DVD-ROM" should be selectable.

temj,

It is grayed out but I don't need it anyway because I use the lite-on booktype utility to booktype my DVD+R media to dvd-rom. If I select my benq as the burner the option is available but since I use the benq booktype management utility to booktype DVD+R media to dvd-rom with my benq there is once again no need for me to use the option.

I was telling others how to booktype DVD+R media to dvd-rom with their litey useing the lite-on booktype utility if the option is grayed out in shrink or not available in Nero.
