I know that I love the burns provided by my 4163B. I have not tried anything faster than 4x though. Now that I have some TY's I might give it a go (but sure would hate to ruin one).

I'm sure my benq will burn my verbatum (MCCOO3) hub printables at 8x but still burn em at 4x just to be on the safe side. I burned one at 12x one time just experimenting. Although it played just fine the scan wasn't quite as good.

i've been told that 4x is not a good practice at cdfreaks - http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=152696&goto=newpost

- however i'm also told that CMC are some of the best media whenever i post there so i don't worry about their comments too much :)

Although there is a lot of valuable info over there and some very intelligent folk you still have to take some of it with a grain of salt. I just about fall out of my chair everytime I see someone refer to cmc magnetics as being good media.

Does anyone here know why they refer ppl to CMC mags over there? did they do some sort of test that proves cmc mags to be good or what? I'd just like to know out of curiosity.

Imagine the ppl over at CD freaks read Nero Logs and say "You shouldn't use MCC disc" and then go on to talk about Memos. And what if there was a DocCMC instead of our own DocTy.

to me it looks like they test lots of drives with lots of different media, with a big emphasis on quality scans - ie pretty graphs. i myself go buy CRC errors - or lack of.....

its 23:30 but it feels like 2am. i get up at 05:30 so am shutting PC down in 2mins... anyway, the latest (free) monthly trial of dvdinpro is out now (www.dvdinfopro.com) that's my fave tool for CRC checking, though there's VSO Inspector 1.1.1 too and more probably (sorry, brain fade)

KProbe doesn't show crc errors but will give you an idication of whether or not you have a good burn. It only works with lite-ons and lite-on oems and it's free. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441 You can use nero scan disc to check for errors. I've had some burns with no crc errors that would not play and it was evident by looking at the KProbe scan PI and PIF graphs of the disc.

GlueEater,

Why don't you scan one of those discs that skips with KProbe and post the results? Set scan speed to 4x.

Mort,

is there any significance on why to put the speed on 4x in Nero Scan disk? I was asking because my only choice was 8x and maximum when I clicked on the arrow.

I wanted to check a disk out that I was having problems with after burning.

4x is not a big deal with Nero scan disc I was refering to kprobe cause 4x is the standard for comparing scan results.

here you go, huh...looking at this test, it doesn't seem all that bad, maybe it was just the two players, should try testing on something that isn't a gaming console next time.

Hi everyone ,
I have a tale of C.R.C errors.
I recently built a new base unit and installed all the peripherals from my old setup.
Same hard drives and rom drives.
And suddenly started getting C.R.C errors on burnt disc's previous burnt on the old setup.
Even getting errors on software supplied disc's.
After a quick check of the system configuration of the rom drives in the control panel.
I found the drives did not set up properly with the installation of the new motherboard.
Through previous experience I found that the errors occur less frequently when the DMA and SYNC DATA TRANSFER OPTIONS for the rom drives are tagged.
However i would not say this would cure all the ill's with C.R.C errors.
As other problems are are a factor.
But this may help with a lot of them .

regards 'Z'

I will put up a couple of scans, and a personal note about scans. The other forum cdfreaks likes to use scans to prove a point. The problem is, a CMC can scan pretty good with low PIF numbers. The test only shows the current condition of the disc. CMC's dye can rot causing something that was once good to go bad. By the time you get to a rotten disc, it is too late to recover the movie off that disc, and get anything watchable. I like doing disc test, just for the science of it, but real world conditions show the true winners: good media. The following scan is of a CMC and a Verb Lightscribe disc. The conditions were stacked in favor of the CMCs as the disc was burnt at 1x on a standalone DVR (no mulit-tasking there), and the movie only used 3.84 Gb of space (never got near the edge where many more errors show up). The Verb was burnt at 4x on a PC although i didn't multi-task, i had that option. First the CMC:

Now the Verb:

If less than 280 PI and less than 32 PIF is considered good, then the CMC in this test passes. (the verb still looks better) In real life, real world conditions, the CMC doesn't even come close. It's not even in the race. It's even running in the wrong direction.
*A note on CRC errors. I had a disc that would cause shrink to freeze up and get a CRC read error. Pulled disc out, and it was scratched. Tried all the methods of scratch repair, and nothing worked. Drive reading CRC disc was a lite-on DVD rom. Took disc out and put it in the burner drive, and disc was read thru the crc error (or the drive never saw one). Turns out the DVD-ROMs firmware was out of date by 2 versions. The burners firmware was up to date. If you have the option, use another drive to read a CRC error disc. It might work.

Die CMC Mag!!!
