The Sony DVD+R ARE Taiyo Yuden Made according to Sony themselves. Good Media? Hell Yes! Excellent Media! Top Notch! I haven't seen any of the 16x yet in Sony 50 packs of DVD+R.
All the 50 packs of DVD+R 8x MIJs I have bought have coded as YUDEN000 T02. In MY opinion, some of The very best blank DVD+R media out there. Ask Docty~! :)

Quote: i don't know if TY makes 16x yet
actually, THEY DO...but, i haven't gotten my darn shipment yet~!! grrrrrr...
Taiyo Yuden's 16x DVD+R format code out as YUDEN000T03 just for your info, when i get mine in...i will let you all know what the unique laser inner hub reading is... :)
as to "sony" coded media, it's very decent, i haven't used very much of it..maybe a 50-pack total, but, very few issues...it's good stuff. :)
docTY~
p.s. as to the "debate" whether ALL of Sony's media are made by Taiyo Yuden...even the ones that are purportedly using the Sony media ID coding, the ONLY sure-fire way to check is on the inner hub...
ALL Taiyo Yuden discs will have that laser inscribed coding, since my experience with Sony media isn't that extensive, for those that are questioning whether or not Taiyo Yuden made them, but Sony slapped it's own media ID coding on them...check the inner hub and let me know what it says...if you DO NOT find the "GG000xxx" (8x dvd-r) or "TG000xxx" (8x dvd+R) where "xxx" is the batch number of the discs...THAT will be the answer to whether they are Taiyo Yuden made or not...if you don't see this coding...you DO NOT have Taiyo Yudens...
i have read various posts of people contacting Sony about WHO makes their media, etc..etc..and i have acted upon that and contacted Taiyo Yuden personally to VERIFY these so called "claims" that Sony use Taiyo Yuden on ALL their 8x rated media, regardless of country of origin...from what Taiyo Yuden (the MANUFACTURER) told me, my way of verifying GENUINE Taiyo Yudens STILL holds true...that is the TRUE test of Taiyo Yuden authenticity...based on the inner hub coding, NOT by the media ID coding and country of origin~ :)
i don't care what Sony says about WHO makes their media that uses the Sony media ID coding...i have confirmation from Taiyo Yuden that Sony COULD be telling whoever asks whatever they want just to get that question out of their queue~ :0
last word on Taiyo Yuden...if anyone has some MIT Sony's with the Sony id coding, please check on the inner hub to see IF you see one of the 2 codes i mentioned above...IF YOU DO NOT SEE IT, then those are NOT made by Taiyo Yuden...simple as that...regardless of what Sony "claims" is their manufacturer..
docTY~

The Doctor has spoken! If anyone knows Taiyo Yudens He does. Thanks for the "inner hub i.d." info Doc! (Get a Magnifying Glass) Personally speaking, if it's Sony Media & Made in Japan, I feel like it's Quality Media. Heck, I think ANY Media that Japan makes will be very good. I agree too Doc, Verbatim, (MCC) makes the Best DVD+R DL media as of now. In fact, the only DVD+R DL I'll buy.

Of course that disc is well over a year and a half old and doesn't say accucore like my newest sony tys.
I will pick up a few of those japanese spindles at my nearby staples. Can't pass up those tys. BTW: Those taiwanese SonyD11 are still very good. Can't go wrong with sony 8x media.

thank you saugmon and maxburn, guess the "debate" on WHO makes their MIT Sony media has come to a final conclusion...it's OBVIOUSLY NOT Taiyo Yuden based on your findings~ :) i will not make any false assumptions as to WHICH manufacturer actually produces them, but i do agree, the Sony coded media is quite good~ :)
as i mentioned earlier, i have NOT had extensive tests nor purchases on the Sony MIT media, only 50-pack to try from before...much like saugmon, quite awhile ago before the new labeling of "accucore" came into effect...
either way, i hope it can be LAID TO REST as to people saying Taiyo Yuden makes ALL Sony's media...this is SIMPLY NOT TRUE at all~ :)
despite the media ID coding on discs nowadays, those can easily be faked (ie. FAKE TYG02s-fake taiyo yudens) on a variety of brands of discs...the truth of the matter is...regardless of MID coding, at least in the case of Taiyo Yudens, you CAN still verify the authenticity of them, as per the laser inscribed coding on each of the discs, regardless of format or rated speed...
well, i sincerely appreciate saugmon and maxburn posting up your findings as i do not have my MIT Sony's any longer (they were backups i made for friends well over a year ago, so they are no longer in my possession...it's been too long to remember the info i did have on them in the past...i'm glad you guys could verify them for me on my behalf~ thanks buddies!

yes, indeed all the info is very helpful and supportive, just to let you know Doc that the 16x MIJ's i picked up at CompUSA during the holidays, the inner hub coding its kind of difficult to read but to the best of my eyes it says DRP5GG0001, the inner label says SONY CORPORATION DVD+R Vers. 1.3/1-16x.
I also did a quality check with Nero on a recent back up and the quality came out @ 90.
This is the 8x Sony MIJ, , and yes those are TY's:

Another thing is when you touch the 16x media the disc itself feels like its not TY, its thinner and sharper on the edges, TY has more like soft solid feel to it, yes u might think it sounds overboard but just my 2 cents on the topic.
I will definitely stop by Staples and check those Sony' on sale and if they are 8x they are definitely TY's in my opinion, but on the 16x I am not so positive.

I like the Sonys that are Tys. The label side is smooth white, and a sharpie works fine on it. They are getting harder to find at my local media spots. Just an FYI, i checked a spindle of verbatim CDrs i had and they came up prodisc. These were MIT and were on sale a couple of months ago. They seem ok, but i expected more from Verbatim. Wish i had a bigger selection of Sonys to post about, but all i have are the +R and -Rs, and only about 150 of those. Now if i were Doc (LA's media mogul), and this were my fav brand, i would have 15,000 of them on hand. :) Hey there Doc!

Since I ran out of my non printable TY's and need to place an order w/ supermediastore I bought a 50 pack of the sony's today at staples to tide me over.
They only had 3 packs left - only one MIJ - the -r's 8x. Didn't think they would be ty's since they had the AccuCORE label on them.
Here's the id code:

hey there maxburn buddy, how u been? :)
anyways, MOST of my discs are non-labelled shiny silver Taiyo Yudens, i buy most of my media online; but i do the occasional "wipe out" of local Staples/BestBuy when i CAN find the TY discs under the various labels/companies :)
i really like those colored 30-pack of Fuji's that are TYs (8x dvd-r/dvd+r MIJ) :P Staples locally no longer has them in stock due to me...LOL..the TY ones at least...
anyways, binkie, i've had quite good success with the Sony coded media, even though limited to 50, they have proven to be quite good.
yes, those are not Taiyo Yudens as both saugmon and maxburn have CONFIRMED, but you should be just fine~ :)
docTY~
p.s. i haven't been to a store locally in quite a few months now, last time was when Staples had the colored Fuji's on sale 30-pack for less than $10...i dunno if anyone has found any 100-pack Sony's MIJ lately neodave...i'm sure people will start posting if they DO or DO NOT :)

Just picked up some 50 pack spindles of Sony MIJ DVD-R 8x and DVD+R 8x at Staples for 14.99. They only had 1 8x MIJ -R, the rest were all MIT 16x.. All the +R were 8x and MIJ. The inner hub code on the 8x+R is TGO1200. The code on the -R is DRM5G80001. These say accucore on the disk. I have not id scanned them yet.

actually, what you got there are 8x Taiyo Yudens, the write descriptor just means on YOUR PARTICULAR burner, it can overspeed to 16x... :) while i would recommend against "overburning" ie. burn faster than rated speed, you COULD do it if you like...

are yah saying that the sony DVD+R are better than the sony DVD-R, i've been using the sony DVD-R for a while( which where made in taiwan) and they have been very good to me. Today I've pick up my first 50 pack DVD+R from sony, which happens to be ty02- but will these play in most stand alone dvd players.
i use CloneDVD and AnyDVD to make backup of my movies

@sheempa
anyone can argue for days whether DVD-R format is "better" or DVD+R format is "better"...but, it comes down to COMPATIBILITY...IF your dvd burner supports bitsetting (ie. booktyping your DVD+R format to dvd-rom) it WILL be more compatible on standalones than even the DVD-R format~ :)
just depends what you have to work with...
i am personally a DVD+R guy, booktyped to dvd-rom of course...but, i do use the occasional DVD-R for my family's standalone player that is UNUSUALLY picky about my DVD+R booktyped to dvd-rom...while USUALLY the opposite is true for most people, my family's standalone Toshiba does NOT like my DVD+R booktyped to dvd-rom, but will play DVD-R format flawlessly...freak of nature type thing i suppose...
so, it comes down to IF your dvd burner is bitset capable...IF it is, then i would suggest the DVD+R format discs booktyped to dvd-rom for the highest compatibility with stand alone players...
the PREFERENCE of using DVD-R or DVD+R is a PERSONAL decision...no one format is "better" than the other, it comes down to what works best for YOUR INDIVIDUAL setup. :) the ONLY thing i can suggest is that you USE GOOD QUALITY media, in either format of your choosing, otherwise, it won't matter what plays or not if you are going to have pixellation/freezing/skipping/and a myriad of OTHER playback issues when using cheap/poor quality media.

docTY, I actually tried just for the hell of it to overburn those disks at 16X. I did only a couple of them, got a quality score of 100% on one (bragging a bit). What I found is that the PIE is a bit higher then normal when burned at 8X. So while I'm not advocating either overburning them it can be done. TY is sweeeeet media :)
EWeeks, I use the same burner with Liggy@Dee fw, the best burns I get is at 8X. I'm not sure for the PS2 part though.

while i have NO doubt that your NEC can overburn the 8x rated TYs @16x, that's why i stated "you COULD burn them @16x if you wanted to"...i have a Nec 3520a which CAN overburn @16x too, my Pioneer dvr-109 can ALSO burn these @ 16x as well AND my Benq 1640 for purpose of ANOTHER example of my drives that can~ :)
i have done a few MYSELF, much like you have, @16x, but on ALL my 8x rated TY media, i have PERSONALLY found that burning @8x for ME produces the BEST results~ :)
i am not trying to argue with anyone here, some of these drives are built so well that overburning is QUITE possible and i have seen it for MYSELF on my various drives mentioned above~ :)
while i have never gotten a 100% quality score over-burning @16x on 8x media, i have observed many 90%+ scores.
everyone's individual setups and burning drives will be different...good to hear of your 100% score @16x, that is quite impressive.
regarding the firmware to burn @1x, i don't really know as i seldomly use my NEC, it's on my 2nd computer and not a primary drive i use daily...also, i don't own a PS2 nor have i ever made a backup of a game...a good member to ask would be "alkohol" he does backups of games and is far more knowledgeable than i am in terms of backups for games~ :) i've only READ that burning SLOWLY produces better quality backups for games, but i don't have any experience in that field...

Just purchased the only 2 packs of Sony MIJ DVD-R's at Staples. They come up as Taiyo Yunden, TYG02... I assume I made a good grab!! The others were MIT. They did have the Sony DVD+R's that were MIJ but I have never used +R before so I left them on the shelf. Thinking now that maybe I made a mistake! Oh well life goes on...
