I just picked up 4 packs of the Sony +R at Staples. All they had were the MIJ, yahoo. They had quite a few of these. Not sure if one store will ship specific to a different location but this was in Fond du Lac, WI if you want to call them direct.

Best Buy was next door and their 100 packs were all MIT.

Still waiting for some good deals on inkjet printables. Any news out there?

Thanks.

Thanks Catfreak, I guess the Sonic software that came with the Sony drive does not have the booktype setting option available. (?)

I ordered Sony DVD -r & +r from staples today free shipping if you sign up for their card and also if your order before discount is over $50.

I will try + & - with Sony discs to see if there is any difference.

I also want to send some home movies to family in Europe on PAL and I believe +R works better for that.

I'm considering picking up a pack of the Sony DVD+R for the first time and trying that booktyping to DVD-Rom that seeems like a common recommendation. Does anyone know of a guide on how to do that with a LiteOn 1693 (I believe that's right). Also....would that affect anything having to do with the DVD-Rs or just the DVD+Rs? Thanks!

here ya go:

the simple read-me is found here so you know what you are doing...

i have that same drive and it works fine for me~ :) if it doesn't work properly for you (some members have not managed to get it to work in the past) you can also use nero/dvd decrypter/dvdinfopro to set booktype as well~

good luck

p.s. edit..it is ONLY for dvd+r/dvd+r DL/ dvd+rw media only, it will NOT work on dvd-r format~ :)

Txs!!! Dang copy and paste!!

@ecarlson
You'll need to download liteon utility. Only +r/rw can be booktyped.
Here's a great guide on booktyped:

Here's a link to the utility:

wow...thanks for those lightning-fast responses! I could probably learn this from those guides, but the thing I was wondering was would any of the settings that might get changed to do the booktyping alter the effectiveness of doing the DVD-Rs or would those continue to burn as normal. Reason I ask is...I still have several spindles of DVD-R in the closet and was just wanting to experiment with the booktyping while the Sonys were on sale this week. Thanks again!

booktyping the DVD+R has NOTHING to do with your burns on DVD-R format discs...no worries~ :) it DOES NOT alter anything on your DVD-R discs that you want to finish up from your closet~ :)

i bought 4 packs of these sony +r, MIJ...there are 8 more spindles left here in carson staples...i figured i might as well have others have a go at them unless kivory666 beat them to it...i still have about 200 of the multi colored MIJ fuji's from staples so i am all set till next year

these fujis are working great, thanks for turning me on to them...you think these sonys MIJ will work just as great?

Okie dokey...what might I be doing wrong here? I bought a spindle of the Sony DVD+R MIJ....downloaded Booktype 1.3.5 (apparently the most recent version - updated 1/21/05)...inserted a disk into the drive..opened the program...said current disc type DVD+R...I selected to change booktype to DVD-ROM...clicked Change...it reported at the bottom "Booktype changed successfully!". However it still shows as a DVD+R when I run the query. I even tried closing the program, re-opening it, hitting query again and it still shows current type DVD+R. I see it works for some not for others...I'm anxious to see if I'm doing anything wrong as this sounds like a great way to make universally compatible burns (on various DVD players at least). Please advise again. :)

ecarson.......my liteon is older 451s, but should work the same way.

I believe you are thinking this program changes the media just by putting it in the drive. NO. It changes as it starts the burn process.

Insert your + r media into your drive, wait until the light stops blinking, change media type to dvd-rom. Press okay. THEN use your burning program. I recall your burning program (you would press the "start" button when it changes green or blue).

Only AFTER the burn completes, ie drawer opens/burn successful, can you queery to see if the media did indeed change. Insert the burnt media back into your drive and then queery.

Oh thanks so much...I was hoping I was just missing something terribly simple! :) So it sounds like it's important I leave the disc in the drive after performing the "change" operation. There doesn't appear to be an "ok" button on that program so I'm thinking I just do the change function...close that program...leave the disc in the drive and launch the burning program. It sounds like you recall my use of DVDxCopy but I've now officially switched to AnyDVD/CloneDVD and there's no going back! :) I'll let you know if this worked...

Thank you all so much...that did it!

Now let me ask...I know that the Sony DVD+R code out to TY which is largely considered the best. What else do you strongly recommend in +R? Is Maxell and Verbatim as good in +R as -R? It seems the ones on sale here most often are Sony, Maxell, Verb, and Office Depot. Do the OD +R code out to Ritek as well?

the Sony MIJ 8x DVD+R are exactly the same :) the only difference is that the media is LABELLED "Sony" as opposed to FUJI/FUJIFILM, the actual PRODUCT is made by Taiyo Yuden...identical in every way except the top portion (writeable side- i use Sharpies btw) :) no worries...i've had equal success with either Fuji/Sony Taiyo Yuden produced discs...

also, i have enough Taiyo Yudens to last me for years at this point, i bought the unbranded silver shiny/lacquer kind directly from Taiyo Yuden earlier this month...approx. 3,000 pieces in the 8x DVD+R format~ but, i too have many of the colored Fuji 30-pack left from last year~ :) i can never have enough i guess, so, thanks for letting the others know that the carson store has MIJ spindles left, i haven't purchased media locally (in terms of Taiyo Yuden) since the Staples 30-pack colored fujis~ so with that in mind, nobody will be fighting ME off to get their hands on some... :)

@ecarlson

mackdl nailed it right on the dot, you won't be able to verify whether the change to dvd-rom was done successfully or not until AFTER the burn is done~ :) his explanation was very clear and concise, couldn't have said it any better myself...

personally, i consider the Verbatim 8x/16x DVD+R MCC003/MCC004 discs VERY VERY good, right up there with these Taiyo Yudens...i have used quite a few of these extensively with no problems at all~ i burn these @8x as well, same speed i burn ALL my Taiyo Yudens at~ :) very consistent media...gets a thumbs UP in my book!

also, i only used about 200 of the Maxell MIJ 8x DVD+R, with the MAXELL002 coding, these are Hitachi made, also very good media...

and finally, i haven't used any of the OD Ritek coded R03s 8x DVD+R, but many members here have great success with them...with all these TYs and Verbs i have, i have pretty much been out of the "ritek game" for a few years now...not that there is anything wrong w/ Ritek in MY EYES/OPINION, i just stick with TYs extensively as they've NEVER let me down, in either format in ANY rated speed... :)

docTY~

I have personally burned over 100 of the OD +R's 8x which code out to Ritek R03's without a single failure. All play great. When these are on sale for .20 ea this it a great buy.

Cheers.

My media of choice has been Maxell +r's (for booktyping). I stick to what works for me.
100 spindles were on sale at FutureShop @$24.99 CAD for MIJ in late December. I did notice the difference in packaging other than MIJ sticker (pasted over "made in Taiwan") above the UPC code. The bottom of the spindles were sectioned in pies similar to Trivial Pursuit game pieces. The MIT bottoms are not sectioned. These do indeed id as Maxell 002.

Well guess what, the blank media I ordered online from Staples came today. Both were 50 packs and 1 was made in Japan (+R 50 pack) and the other (-R 50 pack) was made in Taiwan. go figure...

My Sony MIJ +R 50 packs from Staples are coding out the same as Meltstorm from page 1 of this thread.

The odd thing is that the package says "1x - 8x" for speed, but it coded out to be 16x.

I looked at the inner hub for the stamped/etched codes and I am not sure which one to use. Is it the code that is cut/stamped into the plastic or the one that appears to be under the ink?

(My eyes are getting old, but here it goes)

Stamped # = SMM1050SG16778001360010

printed under ink # = DRP5GG0001

For what it's worth, I backed up two movies and both rated at about 92.5%. I just want to know what I am buying.

Thanks.

Good afternoon all,

I've found these forums very helpful with trouble shooting and finally decided to join my self. Any help is appreciated

I just bought the Sony DVD+R 100 pack spindle from BB and on the ring of the disc is print DRP5GG0001. When I try and get the disc info through Nero CD-DVD Speed it says the manufacturer is unknown. Does anyone know if these are Taiyo Yuden discs?
