Haile,
Locally (Pittsburgh) the BB 100 pack was made in Taiwan and not a Taiyo Yuden. You could get lucky however. Did you look to see where the were made?

Thanks for the link Garmoon, I'll have to give it a try.
Heatsink, the Sony discs I got were made in Taiwan as well. While reading through postings I read (I don't remember where), that Taiyo Yuden is no longer in Japan (which could be false info).
Also a previous post by Kivoy666 seemed to say that coding "GG000xxx" would identify it as a Yuden product.
I was using Verbs with great success and I hope I didn't waste $30 on the Sony discs.

@buckysabi
The discs you bought are rated at 8x but can burn over the rated speed. Even though it's probably good media I would not burn them higher than the rated speed of 8x.
The GGxxx will be around the hub of the disc to see if their ty's - it can be pretty hard to see!!
Even if they don't id as ty they will probably id as sony - you should be fine. Just dl the program in garmoon post to get the id. It's easier!
@haile1205
Even though they were made in Taiwan - they'll probably id as sony so you should also be fine. Post back the id after you run it thru dvd identifier.

At least Sony made yours, never heard of Lead Data. I haven't used them yet. You just never know what you're getting.

@haile1205
based on what you have posted and scanned, you did NOT get Taiyo Yudens...
Taiyo Yudens are ONLY MADE IN JAPAN, despite what others have told you and what you have read previously (their info is false, as you have noted)...if you do not already know, i have a personal contact with Taiyo Yuden here in the U.S. and i help people here on AD with any questions they may have regarding TYs; my replies come STRAIGHT from Taiyo Yuden in terms of accuracy and knowledge base...
but, that is NOT to say that you have "wasted your money" on these Sony discs... Sony's own coded media have proven to be very good with MANY members here and their own experiences... i no longer have any to check myself as i've only purchased Taiyo Yuden discs for quite some time now and i don't buy locally very frequently anymore.
you should be ok with them...i will say that Sony's own coded media, on both formats, is pretty good stuff...my point of offering information here is to give members a CLEAR definition of identifying Taiyo Yuden discs or not....i just disspell some of the false info. going around about people getting Taiyo Yudens/Sony media ID coding, etc and people with misguided/wrong info regarding Taiyo Yuden... :)
i am NOT an expert on Sony or their own coded media, i AM what you would call very knowledgeable/prolific when it comes to Taiyo Yuden and THEIR product...i didn't get my nickname on here for NOT knowing pretty much what needs to be known/shared on Taiyo Yuden for nothing... :)
have a good one...

I think that's BS. People buy blank media not knowing what they're getting. So, three different people buy the same Sony DVD+R disc and one person can get TY's, another person can get Sony and another can get Lead Data Inc (who knows how many others).
I'd be pretty pissed if I went to the store and bought Heinken but when I opened the case it was Milwaukee's Best.
I'm thinking the next stack of DVD+R's I buy, will be Taiyo Yuden brand, at least I'll know what I'm getting. :)

in your opinion, what's the best way to purchase Taiyo Yuden media. Through their website directly or through one of the links on the top of this page.
Thanks, you've been VERY helpful

@haile
that's what I personally do...i buy genuine Taiyo Yudens that are "unbranded", not branded by some other company...as long as you buy from a reputable online e-tailer, you should be just fine... :)
ie. supermediastore.com, rima.com, even shop4tech.com (they have gotten their act together from years ago when they were sending out FAKE TYs- i was one of their unfortunate victims) :P
that is THE main reason why i don't buy locally that often, you just NEVER KNOW when the company is going to switch manufacturers at a moments notice~ :) u just never know...i would like to KNOW what i am getting when i drop hard earned $$ down for a purchase...in this case, Taiyo Yuden is the only media that i will pay for...save yourself the headache of sifting through spindle after spindle to find the "MIJ" ones, and even then, you don't know 100% they are the TYs...step back, take a breather and order online for genuine Taiyo Yudens... :)
docTY~
edit: p.s. the general public can NOT order Taiyo Yudens directly from Taiyo Yuden, most people need to buy from a reseller (ie. online retailer that TY supplies to them for them to sell to the public)...i just happen to have a strong business partnership with Taiyo Yuden, that is how i order from them directly...didn't want to mislead you or others into thinking that anyone can order directly from Taiyo Yuden, that is not the case...sorry.

After the success of the booktyping experiment last night, I was surprisingly able to replace my stored collection of unopened DVD-Rs for DVD+rs tonight. One question though...both the Verb + R and the OD (Ritek) +R are made in Taiwan. That's not as bad as the Sony MIT is it? Should these be fine? Thanks!

you said "Just dl the program in garmoon post to get the id. It's easier!"
Huh? I have not done anything in garmoon since college. Not sure if I am still up for it.
Please clarify for me.
Edit: Sorry, just realized what "garmoon" is.
Thanks.

That is the first non sonyD11 or Yuden000-T02 that I have heard of using lead data for the sony 1x-8x speed. That stuff is usually rubish.
This will keep me on alert for taiwanese sony's. Staples only had 1 spindle of the taiwanese sony left,so I'm glad I bypassed it. Maybe they got a shipment in yesterday with the yudens?
They were all out of fuji +8x. Hopefully a big sale is on the way.

I also ran 100 of the Office Depot +16x with that MID code. I did have 6 bad discs in 1 spindle.It looked like a waterspot inbetween the layers. Other than that bad area of 1 50 pack spindle,no problemo. I'd still rather have the Office depot +8x riteks. They are very good.

Could you tell me how to post scans of cd/dvd speed or link me to where that info is? I am getting a lot of PI errors on my TY's and want to see if someone could tell me if my burner is failing. Thanks

@Piratech....... when I first started burning DVDs...... and I must say I used many a Memorex disk because I didn't know any better......I checked out my old burns using DVDXCopy..... my old Memorex 4x DVD+Rs are RICOHJPN! When I bought the "new" 8x Memorex disks, that's when I got the CMC crap!~ I guess with all the bad mouthing of Memorex they went back to RICHOHPN for their 16x disks! Good for them. My old Memorex disks still work and it's been 3 yrs now, or better!

@eweeks
you need to press the "Prnt Scrn" button near the top right hand side of your keyboard to save the screenshot, then go into something like microsoft paint and paste there, edit out the background as you only need the actual Nero cd-dvd speed results to post here...then you can save it as a file (ie. .jpg or .png) then proceed to upload that screenshot to a hosting site of your choice...i use both imageshack (free) and photobucket (which i paid for) :)
i am in no way even remotely "experienced" in these screen shots and stuff, but have managed to only get a few scans up already...i hope someone comes on here to clarify as what i'm telling you is VERY basic... :)

Doc,
I had the opportunity to stop at Staples today and browse through the media aisle. I found most of the DVD+R MIJ and the DVD-R was a mix of MIJ and TW.
This is a scan of the MIJ disc's i just purchased:
Pre-recorded Information:
Manufacturer ID: SONY08D1
Book Type: DVD-R
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:SONY08D1]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R]
Manufacturer Name : [Sony Recording Media Co.]
Manufacturer ID : [SONY08D1]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)]
And this is also a 50 pac Sony (16X) brand I had bought previously from Comp USA. Not sure where these where made however as I lost the sleeve long before I cared about this.
From Decrypter:
Pre-recorded Information:
Manufacturer ID: SONY16D1
and DVD ID:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:SONY16D1]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R]
Manufacturer Name : [Sony Recording Media Co.]
Manufacturer ID : [SONY16D1]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)]
Book Type: DVD-R
So Doc, do you believe these are both made by TY or someone else? (The 16X worked OK and I have never had a problem with them.)
I plan to return the Sony 50pac I got from staples on-line service yesterday since they are MIT (also 16x). I have not opened them but judging buy Haile's scan I do not want to chance them.
@eweeks,
one more tip with the screen shots:
If you hold down the 'Alt' key while hitting print screen you will only copy the active window in your screen shot and not the whole desktop.
Good luck,
HS
