I haven't been posting here much lately. After 36 years of smoking, the last 10 of which, I smoked 3+ packs a day, I am now almost through day 18 of being smoke free. I am using the Commit lozenges, and they have really helped, but I am still in for a long battle, but I want to quit, and I will make it.

That was an FYI, because there have been a number of times that I wanted to post replies to some idiotic posts that I have seen, but I refrained from doing so. LOL I wouldn't have had anything productive to say, so I said nothing.

BTW, I am quitting for myself, first, but I am also doing it for those 2 little girls below this text. They are a huge part of my life, and I want to stick around to see how they fare in their lives.

congrats, I plan on quitting myself in the near future. smoking cigs is my last bad habit I have (used to do drugs a few years ago) so smoking is the last battle I have to get healthy again. I will look into the lozenge, I've heard it really helps. It kills two birds with one stone...the nicotine crave and the oral fixation. When I tried to quit before I just used the gum and it was horrible and didn't do anything for me. Hopefully when I make the commitment to quit I will make it happen as well.

im only 21 and ive been smoking for 5years.i know i cant quit but if i was going to i would do it cold turkey no use quitting smoking and still being addicted to nicotene.if i dont have a smoke for about 90minutes i start stressing out really bad.my lungs arn't the best.i noticed that cigarrettes make me cough more than weed probably due to amount of chemicals in them.i plan to start doing more physical training and my lungs should improve even if smoking is killing them.

i quit smoking last january and havent smoked a cigarette since. i didnt cut down first i just stopped and it went a lot better than my previous attempts to quit.

My advice is just dont smoke at all... the longer you go without a cig the easier it gets to quit them and eventually you wont need them at all

admitadly i didnt have 36 years of addiction to go against i only smoked for 5 years so it wasnt as hard for me as it would be for grandpaBW.

i wish all the best to you and i hope you manage to quit

Thanks, all.

@SypherTek: Congrats to you! When I say day 18 (19 now), I mean that I have not had even one puff off of a cigarette.

@Darthnip: My wife says that she doesn't notice a difference in my mood. That could mean that I am no grouchier than I was before my attempt to quit, though. :) My lungs have definitely done battle with my mind, though.

Congratulations! ...but don't let your guard down! I'm one of those fools who quits for three and four months then I get complacent or the motivation fails or something but one bad day when my guard is down and I light up.

you think cigarette smoke is bad for your lungs? try smoking black tar heroin for a few months...your lungs will beg you for a cigarette with that crap.

I've been smoking since i was 12/13, something like that... After about 15 years on it, i dont think i have the mental, and definitely not the emotional will power to be able to handle such presure... Some people i know quit just like that, and that is the only way to do it! You only quit when you're ready to quit, the only POA is to take a day at a time. Basically, if you need to plan it, then you're not ready.
Going through a rough patch right now which means that without my nails i'd go nuts... Have to be calm and relaxed next to my kids... Tried quite a few times, the patches, the chewing gums etc, but never made it... It's not in my plans to quit smoking right now...

I still remember my dad quiting smoking on thanksgiving day in 1977. He use to smoke lucky strike. His best friend came down with emphyzema so I think that gave him a little will power.

My mom also smoked, virginia slims. She quit a few years later.

I'd get nauseated in the back seat of the car while they were both in the front seat with cigarettes ablazing. I never even considered cigarettes an option.

I can smell somebody who's been sitting in the smoking room at work after they get off of break. They smell like an ash tray!!!!!!

A guy I work, with told me he used a Hypnotist-paid $30 had no trouble quitting. 8 other people in that group still smokes. Nicotine patches and gum seem to be a ripoff. Just somebody trying to make a buck at the quitters expense.

Cold Turkey all the way.

Good Luck GrandpaBW. Food does taste better once you kick that cigarette habit. Watch out for the weight gain buddy!!!!!!

Good Luck,I'm chearing for you!

I can say it is all in your mind, because if you think about it then you definately are not gonna quit.I would quit smoking, but I honestly don't feel like it at the moment. The gum and patches don't work as mentioned the only way is to go cold turkey. My problem is I can quit smoking, but then I end up starting all over again(more of a weed person though, because it makes me feel better).I smoke cigs and they don't do anything for me but waste time, without them my days would go by so slow. When I quit for good I will look back at myself one day and probably think why did I keep smoking. When you quit not only are you strong mind wise, but you save a ton of money.Cigs are suppose to be the most addicting drug there is,and I agree.

Thanks everyone. I am in the 20th day now, and I count, because I am actually keeping a journal of how my mind and body are, each day. I have looked back at some of the bad days, and I can tell how far I have already come, even though I still have bad days.

The Commit lozenges help, but I think that if a person does not have the mindset to quit, it won't happen, even with the lozenges or patch, or whatever. I was always weak when I made half-hearted attempts before. I may slip now, but I hope not, because I have already overcome a slug of mind games that my body/mind has played on me. lol I haven't even taken 1 puff in 20 days. I am proud of myself.

My Dad is a very devout catholic and use to quit every year for lent. Amazing. Easter must have been a very welcomed day! Years later, as a theology student, I did question giving up something for lent that one should not be doing in the first place,,,rather like giving up adultry for lent!

In 1962, Dad had a heart attack and was lucky enough to survive. His doctor came to the hospital, lit up a cigarette (yes, you could actually smoke in hospitals in those days), gave the lit cigarette to my Dad and said Enjoy it, it's your last...and it was. I've got to hand it to the ol' horse doctor thought because diet and smoking had yet to be linked with heart disease. Damn, wish I could quite!

Keep at it grandpa!

Gerry, that's half funny half sad... I think i'll take the funny side of it and have a laugh...

GrandpaBW, i'll take my hat off for you! Overcoming the mind tricks is the key to success! Keep that diary running here, who knows, it might even inspire other members...
