BigO: When you say 45 minutes including burn, is that a normal time for you? Notice your system is faster than mine (1.5 Ghz vs your 2.8) and your ram is double mine. It takes me about 40-50 minutes just to rip to hd and haven't been able to burn yet (using Decrypter & Shrink). I'm having a problem with my piece of crap burner (external LiteOn 851SX) that refuses to get past 58% burn no matter what media I use. It also won't even burn a CD! Will be buying a new internal burner in the next couple of days, after I decide what I want.

Yeah, that's for me. That sounds awful slow tho, for yours. Tho lack of memory is probably the no.1 reason for slow PC's. Defragging your hard drive on a regular basis and make sure your IDE settings are set to DMA will help tremendously.

I can do a 2 hr. movie 30-35 min. rip & burn with AnyDVD/CloneDVD2, so the big question is: Is the quality any better with DVDcopy3. I know RB/CCE is supposed to be the best but I hear it takes 2-2 1/2 hrs. I quess I'm trying to find the best compromise between quality and speed.

Good point, bigO, if you burn a lot of movies to your HD then delete the files, you must defrag frequently or it will slow down your whole system.

BigO:

I defragged my hd right after I started to try burning (per the excellent guides/people here) and have done it about once a week. I have 512 mb ram and my IDE settings are DMA. I have convinced myself (because I am frustrated) that it is my external burner. I have USB2, but I have never liked having an external burner.

Have found great success/comfort utilizing CloneDVD v2.5.4.3/AnyDVD 4.1.1.2;
Would like to move upto newer AnyDVD version, but have
noticed some note compatibility stalls w/ either v4.5.5.1 or 4.6.3.2.
Has anyone tested CloneDVD v2.5.4.3 and either AnyDVD;
what is proven to work well together ??

Thanks,
RRG

ricoman,

ok, ONCE MORE, DvdCopy 3 measures right up there with RB/CCE and is very fast. I'm not sure of how much of a compromise you're looking for. BTW, RB/CCE takes about 3-4 hours usually, for me anyway....Either way, IMHO both are far superior to Clone Dvd 2 when high amts. of compression are used.

Of course this is subjective by it's very nature and only another opinion, but I think most Copy 3 users would agree.

Tsquare,

I guess it's a matter of personal preference, but I have 3 external burners(since my bay only has two slots, one is my DVD-ROM drive, and the other is my LiteOn burner). And to be truthful I can't tell any difference in performance as far as that goes or whether they're USB 2.0 or Firewire. Of course brand wise I think my Plextors are far superior, but, for me anyway, everything else seems equal. It may be more the burner than the fact it's external.

If the files play on your PC after you've backed them up to your HD, but don't play after you burn them then you would figure the problem lies in the burn or the media. By sending the finished files to your HD you can definitely narrow the problem down drastically.

BigO: Good point about playing the files already on the hd. To be honest, I never thought of that. I assumed (I know) that because I could not complete a burn (got up to 98% one time, but usually not more than 58% - 69%) that the burner was/is the problem, This seemed to make more sense as I could not burn a CD with it and I could with my Plextor CD burner. I might rip a movie to the hd and see if I can play it.

ricoman, no problem, I think you should install Copy 3's trial version and see for yourself. It is a full working version, 2 weeks, I believe. Which is a lot better than when it was Copy 2, only 3 days. Copy 2 was excellent when it worked, but it had pixelation problems and you never knew when they were going to pop up. I have yet to see any pixelation with Copy 3.

Here's the link, make sure you get the platinum version trial, not the gold, and if you decide to buy, it's well worth the 30.00 difference:

tsquare43,

Let me know how it goes, once we determine where the problem lies, we'll proceed from there. Might be there's nothing wrong with your burner or maybe a fix is just a simple flashing your firmware. Maybe save ya some bucks before you have to spend 'em.LOL

Also, it would be good if you could try it with a couple of programs. Shrink is free and what ever else you have. By comparing 2 apps' results, it will help a lot in diagnosing the error, whereever it may be. Make sure you do the same thing in both apps, that is, same editing, amt. of compression, etc. It would probably be best to just run the movie thru and try to do as little change as possible in order to get accurate results. We aren't really concerned with quality here, we just want an accurate sampling under identical conditions between the two programs.

If they play on your PC, then we'll try to burn each one and see what happens. Use a couple of RW's to save on coasters til we get the problem solved. And no crappy media! LOL (memorex, CMC, etc.):>)

just so you all know, the major problem turned out to be the cheap dvd+r's. I used a dvd+rw and they worked fine! Beware of cheap quality DVD+r's (I bought at Tiger direct.com----crappy!)

Does the latest version of DVD43 work on the new DVDs? I had version 1.X and I could not get it to work with Forgotten. I am currently using the trial version of AnyDVD with Recode.

Glad you got the situation resolved and now see the importance of quality media.

bigorange,
You caught me snoozing. Excellent statement on the software. One would almost think we went shopping for software together. DVDCopy3, RB/CCE, and Pinnacle, along with the Nero suite are all top items. The first 2 mentioned are my over all favorites. Nothing I could add that wouldn't be redundant.

Wax on, Wax off. lol

Hi y'all
Thanks for all the info.
Last nite I was trying to copy The Grudge. CloneDVD2 wouldn't take it. DVDD & Shrink work perfect. I'm in learning process. I'll take all of the advise.
Thanks again

BigO:

Thanks for your help. I will be out of town for a couple of days and will try you suggestions when I return.

BTW, my firmware is up to date. Still think it's the burner because it won't burn a cd or dvd and has now periodically started not recognizing any brand media.

What's yr opinion on DVDRebuilder and which combination
of tools would be necessary to tackle current DVD releases ..
AnyDVD, DVDRebuiler, burnware (use GEAR Pro) ??

For RB you need hard drive files. For that you need a decryter like DVD Decrypter that rips to the HD. Having AnyDVD is always a good idea if you need a driver decrypter. Since I have it, I let it run all the time, even while I use DVD Decrypter. Then you have the typical RB setup with the latest Avisynth and and DGDecode.dll plugin (instead of the Mpegdec). Once you've created the encoded file most good burning programs will do the job. Many of us use Nero Express or CopyToDVD, due to excellent results and ease of use.

Using AnyDVD can be done, but the long period it has your drive in use is guaranteed to warm up any laser and it takes a lot longer. Also, if the PC doesn't have a lot of system resources, you're looking at a crash. So, trying to do RB on the fly isn't a good idea.

The name isn't BigO. Just thought I'd pitch in.

I would have to agree. Brobear has put it better than I could. I also run AnyDvd when using decrypter, but I would never burn on the fly using RB/CCE. It takes about 4 hours on the average and talk about wear and tear on your drive, whew! Not to mention, results are more consistant uusing the files from your hard drive in Rebuilder.

As far as tools necessary, CCE Basic costs 58.00, everything else you need there are links for in vurbal's guide and all are free including Rebuilder.

Decrypter is also free for the rip to the hard drive and all that's left is a burning engine. Most of us use Nero Express, as brobear stated and you can use the trial version of that indefinitely.

It comes in the Ultra 6 suite which can be downloaded and installed at the beginning of each month and is good for that entire month. You can keep repeating this for each and every month until you decide to buy(which I highly recommend).

As far as quality, RB/CCE is without a doubt the best compression combo on the DVD market today. Compression levels of over 50% will just about match the original 90% of the time. You can't go wrong using RB/CCE, time is it's only drawback, so most of us start it when we go to bed and it's finished when we get up.

If you have problems there are plenty of us here to help. Setup can be a little daunting, but once that's done, it is ridiculously easy to use. Browse to and load the movie from your hard drive and hit "transcode". That's it. Wait til finished.

Good luck :>)

Thanxs brobear, bigorange -

Had done some research via afterdawn (Googling) while I awaited any response.
Appreciate the kind assistance.
Apologize for directing initial question to bigO;
wasn't aware there was an appropriate protocol to be
followed. He was online (it appeared) at that time, so I sought his help.

Thank you.

Asked on DVD-Rebuilder AD forum, no answer ..

If anyone could add assistance, greatly appreciated.

Sophocles, bigorange, brobear -

Appreciate some help please.

Loaded DVD-RB (v0.70) w/ both MPEG2DEC3DG.DLL & DGDecode.dll in tow, I placed the later in plugins under AVISYNTH folder.

Trying to execute DVD-RB for setup, keep getting "Run-Time Error '5'".
Tried copying MPEG2DEC3DG.DLL into AVISYNTH folder also (ref: DVD-RB.txt guide). Error'd again. Tried combination of each w/ same Error.

D/l'd DVD-RB three times; loaded same.
Any other replacement SW to sub. for DVD-RB.

Would some other program working in background cause interruption .. virus or SpySweeper/ware prog's. Have CloneDVD/AnyDVD also. Add: W/ Startup Manager prog, rebooted w/o virus/scanware.

Add: Use Win98se, AMD1.8, 512DDR.
Thanks for any assistance.
