We might also think about what programs run at " Start up" and whether we need them running in the background.
WinPatrol can help you in that regards if you do not feel comfortable doing MSCONFIG
I think that "Advertisement" is for all of us that have super protection from "pop-ups"& such. Afterdawn has to pay it's bills somehow.
Trying to stay abreast of the latest software version can also lead to problems. "If it aint broke, don't fix it" is still a good axiom. Also, getting fired up & using something like a registry editor can be interesting.
Bottom line, get a good set up going and be very careful about changing it. Use good medium also.

calhoundm,
You can actually delete SP2 using Add/Delete program in control panel. I had to perform that same task at my work place, although there were some security patches might not be stable after deinstalling SP2 but so far I haven't had any problems. But it is always better to do clean install in first place.

The SP2 theory totally makes sense. The problem all happened at the same time.
I am wondering if DVD Shrink will have another version coming out for this problem.

unfortunately there won't be any more updates for DVD Shrink as the author has moved on (works for Nero i believe). Either way SP2 is Microsoft's 'handiwork'. Maybe in SP3 they'll stop breaking things and get back to the stability of NT and Win2K patches;
and then maybe i'll reconsider going XP. Pls don't quote me i can't believe i said that either. (Haven't used XP since it first came out and ditched it quickly after)

New version of Windows is suppose to come out in the next couple of months. I believe it to be called Windows XP Ultra or something like that. Hopefully they got all the wrinkles out before they distribute, unlike SP2.

The world is a better place this morning !!!! I have fixed my DMA problem. Thanks to Creaky for advising me to read the threadf properly and not be so lazy :-)
Now if anyone can help with shrink locking up I would be a very happy chap going into the weekend. (In case you haven't read the problem - Shrink works fine for ripping and backing up but everytime I try to look at a title, or even just swithcing from re author to analysis it locks up on me. Any suggestions

scubabud:
ok, this is my procedure and results.
1. use dvd decryptor and burn to hd
2. DVD Shrink with "compress video" checked (on this particular movie I wasn't given the option to do 'deep analysis"
3. I use custom compression on titles and extras to get the least 'movie' compression.
4. encoding time: 2hrs
went back and did it again
w/o "compress video" 35min
I want to do another with and w/o deep analysis...i'll let you know.

Try to have the source of the file (DVD-ROM/DVD Decrpyted Files) on a different IDE channel (Primary/Secondary) then the Temp files used for burning the backup.
4 IDE channels - Primary Master and Slave
Secondary Master and Slave

What I mentioned above doesn't seem to make a diffence. I'm encoding a different movie now. It started at 1300 and droped to 800 where it's staying.

If this is of any use to you guys ......
One of the tricks of the studios is to place the whole or part of the main feature in the second layer of a DVD movie. This can slowwwww down your backup of the movie you purchased last week :-)
Some studios are trialling corruption methods that make your backing up work slowwwwww, decrypter is the way to fix most of these problems. Make sure you keep up with the latest ver. The author of Shrink is no longer supporting the program and new copy protection methods have been introduced (unsuccessfully) after the last version of shrink.
DMA mode is automatically selected in XP and NTFS2 is a much superior file system than FAT32 for DVD backup.
Don't forget that pesky last chapter that isn't a last chapter (can do funny things to your backups) LOL
I think that Nero is no where near as good for burning a DVD as decrypter is, because decrypter has intelligent retry if you hit a bad spot on your media. Nero will just crap out!!
As for M$ XP SP2 uninsalling will NOT remove digital rights management from your computer. :-(
Hope this info is of some use?

I've been having the same problems with DVD Shrink 3.2 for a while. I used to burn DVD's @ at least 8,500 KB/s at first but now the best I can get is 2,500KB/s (I consider myself lucky if it gets that high).
It used to take less than a half hour to burn a DVD and now it takes over 2 hours... My DMA is enabled, I tried uninstalling the IDE secondary controller... Heck I even tried uninstalling the hardware completely and I still have my problem!
Here's an overview of my system:
- AMD Athlon XP 1900+
- 512 MB RAM
- Windows XP Pro SP2
- Sony DRU-710A DVD+/-RW +/-R Drive
Would using Decrypter actually solve my problem?

If you're using the 'deep analysis and file compression options in DVD Shrink, the analyze and encoding time will be really long, but will result in better playback. Dvd decryptor just makes the process a little eaiser on your burner by getting rid of the encrypting first so it doesn't have to work so hard. (assuming your using a dvd rom to read with and a seperate dvd burner)

if the file compression is enabled it will still take forever. I tried a burn last week with file comp. took 2hrs.
w/o compression it took 35min. And the deep analysis was disabled on both burns. But....it does seem like everything is slowing down.

have you guys tried updating you IDE drivers to the very latest versions. On the decrypter site it advises to make sure your drivers are up to date as some older drivers can cause problems.
Might be worth a try.
Another thing to try is to empty the prefetch file in windows XP and delete the analysis file bank for shrink, for some people this file can become very big. In XP it's in your main drive :\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data ... delete DVD Shrink folder. In windows 98 it's in your main drive :\windows\Application Data\ ..... delete DVD Shrink folder.
May help.
Jon.
P.S. ... You have to enable show hidden files in XP to find the shrink file.

I think most people using xp will find 'prefetch' as a windows subfolder, but that folder never gets any bigger than about 4mb on mine. It is a good idea to check it from time to time and delete old files....or purge the whole folder.

That is very true, but I was mainly referring to an ever increasing file of DVD Shrink in the subdirectories shown.
I have found that it can become a problem sometimes (corrupted analysis) and deleting the analysis files will reset shrink to a beginning level where you accept the contract of use and it seems to improve performance.
This file is ever increasing and is not purged at any time by shrink itself. Deleting it will not affect your use of DVD Shrink.
Jon.
