I know that site very well. It is maintained by Scorpiosoft. He works for VSO software. He is very well known in the NEC world. He works with others to create firmware revisions and mods for the Nec drives. Their latest is the fifth release of the 1.01 firmware for the 3540. They also have alot of great firmware for the 3520.

Anytime Creaky. By the way Office Depot (USA) has Maxell DVD media on sale for 17.99 for 50 starting tomorrow. The dash media codes out to MXLRG03 MIJ are recognized by the NEC 3520 and 3540 at 16x. They are goldtops and great media. I haven't been able to find them for a good price. Normally they are 40.00 for 50, so I am going to stock up. When you get get your NEC I'll give all the firmware and media news.

Quote: I want to say publicly that you are the most knowlegeable person on this forum about many things including Taiyo Yuden media. I on the other hand will probably never know as much as you do. The people on this forum should all commend you on the lenghts you have gone to, too make sure that they have the correct information. But like I said in my other posts, nobody can be perfect. These retailers go to great lenghts to sell as much media as possible, I do not think they realize what one persons bad experience can do to their image. The problem is that the discs they are selling" DO "work, but not as good as the media they say they are supposed to be. The so called TY's I got were not even recognized by my L.G. burner but burned at 12x in my NEC. They were real media, but just not the quality that we are used to. Again, you are my friend and I want everyone to know on this forum, that if anyone is liable to make an error it is not you. We can only go by the information we are given, and if that is incorrect then we have done our best.
i sincerely thank you for the kind words as i assume it was directed towards me~ :) i couldn't agree with you more as we can only go by the info we are given, this SHOULD be good enough for the most part, but, sometimes even i can be deceived unknowingly despite my experiences i've had so far w/ TY~ im going to give my TY rep a call and see what she has to say about these FAKES, i no longer trust meritline after THIS ORDEAL~ :(
2ndly, while you hold me in such high esteem, i am flattered by your comment...the most knowledgeable person on this forum about many things including TY~ awwwwwww...you're making me blush~ while i try my best, there are many people that FARRR surpass my knowledge about things "burning related", but i would like to think i know what i am talking about when it comes to things TY~ :) *pat myself on the back* after stepping off my high horse~ :) anyways, it's just very nice of you to think so highly of me, from a friend, that is always appreciated~ :)
@ creaky
my TY rep is not available on the weekends, gotta wait till Monday before i can get some sort of response from her~ :)

also, @creaky, aland is THE one source i turn to regarding NEC...he was the one who informed me 1st about the LIggy firmware for my nec 3520~ aland is VERY knowledgeable in the NEC dept. as i trust his advice and opinions 100% there~ :) since then i guess i can safely guess that aland owns the 3540 as well, i do not have this drive YET, but in the future, i will naturally turn to him for firmware and news ~ it's good when you have friends one step ahead of everyone else, i feel privileged to call BOTH of you my friends here on AfterDawn~ :)

Back at ya Kivory666, together we conquer all. I do own both the Nec 3520 and 3540 and any help I can be to you or anyone else regarding firmware or the media that works best with them please do not hesitate to ask. Right now my opinion is that the 3520 is the better drive because the firmware is more mature, but the 3540 has more raw potental. They are two completely different drives hardware wise. You cannot use 3520 firmware on the 3540. Hacked or not. By the way there is also a 3530 which is a DELL oem, and the firmware for that drive is also completely different, so be careful when flashing.

@jasper
i can confirm THOSE 100% as being authentic~ im burning on a 4x TYGO1 as we speak right now~ my coding is GD000195~ :P and yes, the Verbatim MCC 8x dvd+r are exactly those...MCC003~ i just broke open another spindle earlier this morning as i am going to backup close to 50 dvds today~ :)
2ndly, on Verbatims...there is an inner code to check as well, i hope i am not opening up another can of worms, but, my Verbs which i KNOW are authentic have the following code on them inscribed by laser : ZD1321-DVR-X47B... :) hope that clarifies for you~ you should have something similar~ as the ones i'm using now are Verbatim branded and i bought them from amazon.com a few weeks ago.
happy burning~ your TYs are DEFINITELY AUTHENTIC~ :)

@kivory666 & @ALAND, yup quite a combination there, Mr TY (lol) and Mr NEC. Alan, sorry i hadn't appreciated you were so knowledgable on the NEC stuff before (probably more stuff too), as i never find enough time to venture into more forums, i tend to get bogged down in some of the DVD forums with 600 new threads each night. I keep meaning to branch out & get stuck into the hardware and PC type forums, there's just not enough hours in the day.
And on that very note i've been on the PC most of the day so am gonna settle down with some Guinness and The Manchurian Candidate then Ladder 49, both on TY :O

thanks aland~ i knew i could count on you for the NECs...we SHALL conquer all~ :) yeah, im hesitant to order the nec 3540 right now as when i purchased my 3520s (i have 2 of them actually) from newegg, 2 weeks later they dropped in price by $15~. i bought them for $63 (2 pieces) from newegg months ago, they have dropped significantly now around the $50 range shipped :)
so, i will wait on my 3450...but, it's good hearing your feedback as to the hardware being completely different and that the 3450 has so much potential once the firmwares (official/hacked) have matured. i really like the speed of my pioneer dvr-109 as i have 3 of them, bought those when they 1st came out from newegg for like $70 each~ i should just WAIT and prices will go down, im just too trigger happy when it comes to having the newest/latest/greatest drives YESTERDAY, rather than tomorrow~ :) im thinking about the plextor for my next drive as well as i have never owned one of them, and i have heard NOTHING BUT GREAT reviews/opinions about them~
good day to you all~

yer, you know what it's like in li'l ole UK, films always released ages after everywhere else. Well Ladder 49 anyway, only just got Manch. I''ve spent far too long on AD today, on and off since 9am. I guess it's a blessing that most people who raise posts, don't actually follow them up as the Blackberry would learn to swim, it's already beeping nonstop as it is. It's 11:15pm here, gonna switch off Blackberry, leave a few Dreamcast downloads going, and stop helping noob's!
Alan, Hostage was excellent. I'll tell you what was far far better though, Tears of the Sun (Bruce Willis again), i felt that movie was really quite moving. And last night i watched Hotel Rwanda and Assault on Precinct 13. I have to try and watch as much stuff as i can at the weekends as i get up too early for work in the week :(

If you want DC and other old isos/emulation stuff, I can wholeheartedly, without any reservation whatsoever reccomend this guy:
http://www.eggmansworld.com/
He is based in Canada, does intl orders and is *very* straightforward and extremely helpful. It may take him a little while to reply as he has so many customers, but I ordered like 300+ emulation dvds from him after getting fed up trawling newsgroups/ftps and they arrived in blighty safe and sound, well packaged and no vat to pay.

naw, Killer Instinct was by Rare, only on Nintendo i think.
I have about 30 originals, and i read that the harder to find ones are 'out there' as ISOs or similar. . The originals are real cheap as they're so old, i got most of my originals for £5 or £10, and have most of the best games that were released. Ebay is the best place for them, though i live and work near a few game shops that have extensive selections. it's been a while since i looked for new games but i think i got nearly all the best ones

Oh, and on the subject of KI, no, it didn't make it to the good ol' DC. You can play it in Mame along with KI2 using the CHD files along with the basic roms. You do need a high spec machine for it, and using it via xbox mame is a no-no due to the lack of horsepower. Theres various guides on getting it going if you google around.

Best thing to do is trawl through the lists and mail the dude, he does do the occasional discount and has the occasional sale also.
There are hundreds of sites that offer similar services that are a complete rip-off. Not only does he use good quality media, they are verified and if you ever get a dead disc, he will replace it.
Oh, and to top it all off, he also donates to the Mamedev fund to boot. If you look at his pricing, its easy to see that not much money, is made in profit at all.
A real lifesaver and all round top bloke!

I know this is a little off topic because this is Ty 16x thread. But if anyone out there is near Ofiice Depot (not OFFice MAX ) try some Maxell + 8x media. They burn at 12x in the NEC 3520 and 40 and the are on sale for 17.99 for 50. Great Media MADE IN JAPAN.

Since we have a couple of NEC "experts" in this thread, please allow me to slightly hi-jack this thread for a firmware question.
I have the NEC 3520A. Bought it from New Egg about a month ago for $49.00 (good deal!). It came with firmware 1.04 and I know the firmware is now up to 3.04 (I think). My question is, should I update to 3.04? My burner works fine as is and everything plays in my pc, home theater system, and stand alone dvd player (which only plays DVD-R). Will I gain anything from the update or is it better to just leave well enough alone? Thanks.

tsquare43: Got my 3520A same place and probably about same time as you. I went ahead and updated my 1.04 factory set firmware to the official NEc 3.04 firmware. I am sure it offers more media compatibility and since it was "official", I knew it would not affect the warranty.
The hacked firmware may give you even more media compatibility, faster burning speeds on some media, removal of riplock, and bitsetting capability. It will however, void your warranty.
It is possible with bitsetting capability, you could buy +Rs, set them to DVD-ROM and then they "may" play on your standalone that you say only plays -Rs.
As with any firmware change, their is always risk.
Aland, has more experience with NEC and firmware than I, so it would be interesting to see his advice.
