Why don't you all stop worrying about getting in trouble with the law and set your internet broswer to hop through a couple of "Proxy Servers" in another country somewhere, so that you can download whatever you want and to the feds, it will look like your sittin in indonesia when your realy in north korea drinking a cup of tea while watching T.V. It will be to much trouble for them to track you through a proxy server and they will leave you alone and go after easy targets who aren't bounced through proxy servers.

This thread hasn't been posted on in a while, but there is still room for further discussion, especially as about a month ago 12 Kazaa users somewhere on the east coast of America were actually arrested, the youngest being 16.
It seems that child porn is far from being 'yesterday's news' - the hype around it continues. Also, an interesting issue was mentioned by UK_MEWZ I think, which is the previewing of files in Kazaa.
As an occasional porn downloader (above board stuff), I recently had an unpleasant experience with Kazaa. As you have all mentioned the file names are often nonsensical, so I wasn't paying a great deal of attention - just clicked on one of the first results from a pretty bland search term.
Anyway, when it had started downloading, I opened the preview window just to see what sort of stuff it was (certainly not suspecting cp). As soon as I did this, various popup windows started flashing up. Instantly I was alarmed, thinking it must be some sort of government sting planted in the file to track user details, or something to that effect (they've been getting ideas from hackers, viz. Gnutella wall of shame a few years back). I disconnected before the popups could load, and canceled the download asap.
I never even found out what the contents of the file was, but am still worried about the connotations. But it is an interesting issue though - in legal terms, I did not *download* the file, because it was canceled immediately before it was even a twentieth of the way thru. However, a fraction of playback was attempted, and any logging traps stored in the file might not discriminate. What are your opinions on this? I feel that now is a good time to be paranoid.
Equally, there are so many thousands of users trafficking sleaze on Kazaa that it would cost more money than world police forces have to track them all down from IP addresses.

if u are looking for normal porn, dont use kazaa. Use something like the donkey network, u will easily be able to find sites that post legit porn links!

Who you reported them to would depend on what country they are from. And then it would depend on whether they have broken the law in that particular country. The main thing is to make sure that your not dragged down with them, so get rid of that file a.s.a.p. The other thing to remember is that they may well have downloaded the file innocently enough thinking it was something else, as you did.

As I said, it would depend on what country they are in. They may not be breaking the law in their country.

What exactly has constitutional rights got to do with anything on this thread. Moral rights perhaps, nobody takes away any of your rights by making this material available. Everyone in this forum knows what sort of material is commonly available on kazaa and for that reason uses other clients.

I agree wholeheartedly with you Darthnip, I've got four young kids myself, but sadly this sort of stuff will always go on until someone devises some sort of software or hardware device to police it as the authourities just don't have enough manpower.

yeh but ask urseld the simplest question
if the po po were to try crack don on ppl with child porn they would always be faced with the overwhelming response of "oh..i downloaded it by accident"
of corse im not saying ppl cant download it by accident
but to me it becomes a CRIME to keep it on ur HDD and make it available to others.
that whole thing about "i forgot to delete it"
shouldn't work and doesn't work
you cannot simply FORGET to delete something as horrific and nasty as that.
thats my point

As I said in another post, the only thing you can and should do is delete these files as soon as you realise what the content of them is. Obviously this wont stop this material from being available for others to be duped into downloading but it should put yourself in the clear. The point about p2p client cracking down on this sort of stuff is just not possible, these clients were written with the purpose exploiting a loophole in the law by no-one person being responsible for any shared content. If the owners of these clients were able to police the content available for download they would have found themselves in court and closed down within months of release.

I think it's disgusting that child porn is so easily available on Kazaa.Has anyone heard of anyone who has been arrested for downloading such a file from kazaa, cause i have never heard of it being done.Is it possible for the police to find out someone who has downloaded child porn files on Kazaa, and if it is i can't understand why more isn't being done to catch these people.Surely it can't be that hard for the police to find the owner of these files?

Exactly, instead of trying to make rich people more money, they should be using their resources to go after these perverts that are exploiting innocent children. That will never happen because there isn't any financial incentive for them to monitor programs like kazaa for anything other than suing people for sharing a few mp3s. It won't be until all mp3 sharing has been stopped or slowed down to what the RIAA feels is acceptable, that maybe they would try to look like the nice guy and "donate" a few of the resources they developed to some form of government or police agency. By that time, this child porn sharing bull$hit will have gone on for far too long. My only hope is that someone with the knowledge and talent would write a program to track a person on kazaa who has been identified as knowingly sharing child porn. By that I mean, not the false shares where people add inappropriate keywords to get people to download a file. Then take their IP address and run it through the http://www.arin.net/whois/ dbase to report them to their internet provider. But this would probably not work because you would have a$$holes out there reporting innocent people who may have pissed them off by stopping their download. So, I'm back where I started...pissed off with nothing I can do about it.
