ok a computer with a CELL @ 3.2 with RSX(better then any latest ati's of nvidia's video cards out there) for only 599$ its a no brainer hard core pc's will pay for that.
now for the everage joe(not the techy,nerdy ect. who use pc for gaming rippind dvd's and all that) the people who just use their pc for email,internet,download files, ect the ps3 is a perfect pc for them.

You forget how fast PC and PC gaming technology advances.
Within a year of the PS3 launch we will see PC components - graphics cards, CPU's, motherboards, sound cards, peripherals, etc - that will totally outclass anything on the PS3.
They may come at a price but you will always see hardcore PC gamers eagerly upgrading their rigs.

that is the quote taken directly. now please tell me where it says it is going to be the end of pc gaming! these sites/people are simply trying to make something out of nothing. between the whole issue of banning used games on the ps3 (which is FALSE) and this garbage, it seems people are committed to nothing other than making blatant attacks at sony, by people who honestly have nothing better to do. sometimes and (im being serious) i think people think there is a "M$ or 360 oath, that they have obligated their lives to and attempt to denounce anything other than their 'precious'" when i read this and im not debating if he said that or not because im nearly certain those where his words, but when i read that, this is what i came away with: a ps3 owner would have the ability to
A. watch films
b. browse the web
c. other home based computer related functions
so basically in the past a gaming console was unable to perform those operations and thus were typically limited to pcs. HOWEVER now these functions are available so YOU DO NOT NEED A PC to carry out those tasks. now correct me if im wrong but im sorry, i do not see quotes stating "the pc is useless/worthless or even inferior." nor do i see anything that says "pc gaming is near its end."
if i told you that i have a f*cking money tree in my backyard that i can pick when i damn well please, would you believe me??? hmmm prolly not, so why do people try to make so much of something when there is nothing to begin with??? think or believe what you like, but if you have no interest in the ps3 or never plan on buying one, then my question for you, is why are you here?? and what is your point??

You're right - things got a little carried away. They did put quite a bit of spin on the original interview.
Don't get me wrong. I have money in the bank set aside for the PS3 and I also have a 2nd HDMI input on my SONY SXRD reserved for the PS3. But there are things that only a PC can do.

bioshok is an xbox 360 exclusive and you can not just say this b/c they are famouse names, how do you know mass efect muight be better. do you undertsand what i mean, i am not asking you to reply saying mass ffect suxs ps3 ownes, i am just trying to tell you that just b/c a game has a house hold name does not mean it will be good.

that was taken out of context and twirled around to try to make the sony ex look arrogant.
The ps3 is a good piece of hardware, but I don't see too many people using it as a primary PC. Especially anyone who is an avid pc gamer.

I think what the article was trying to say was that when people are looking for a new PC (a normal one, for browsing the internet, word processing, etc...), they can consider the ps3 as a substitute. Think of it this way, the ps3 will easily outclass the $700 PCs (not talking about after rebates or those black friday sales) at the holiday season and any PC on the market now is beyond overkill for any normal person (people that only use the internet and word processor).
The thing that the ps3 will not offer however, is the potential to upgrade. By upgrade, I refer to both software and hardware. If you want to start editing movies on a PC, you only need some software and that's it. On the ps3, unless if Sony decides to start making software for it, this will be impossible.
As for price of PC vs. PS3, you cannot compare a $4000 gaming rig. That is already leaps and bounds beyond the PS3. You have virtually unlimited potential with those things. You can build a PC that is comparable to the ps3 for maybe $1000 or so (x800GTO2 unlocked + AMD X2 + 1GB RAM will be close in terms of performance). That is not that far in terms of price, however, you get the following benefits:
Hardware upgrades later on
software upgrades
freedom
CD/DVD burning
full OS
Porn
downloading
ability to play all current games (of course no HDR)
and probably lots more
If not for the software limitation of the ps3, then Sony would have had a more valid point. In terms of power, the ps3 can be hard to match since video cards are so expensive, but you do not need an x1900xtx or those 7900gx2 or whatever to play games. Those are only for the most hard core that want the best on their rigs.
Also, the "upgrading a PC every year" arguement is ridiculous... That is only for those insane people that have to buy everything with an "x" or "extreme" in the title, like the "Xtreme series x1900xtx Extreme Ultimate Edition" (I've actually seen something marketed just like that, only not sure if it was the x1900).
For instance, my PC is 4 years old and I can play Oblivion at 1024x768 with my sliders about half way (all views at max/on) and everything but shadows on and I still get 120FPS indoors, 60FPS in cities and 45FPS outdoors. I only upgraded my video card to an x700pro, which was a mid-grade card a few years back. Bascially, if my PC can run Oblivion at those settings, then this shows that an upgrade every year is not necessary for any gamer. The only ones that spend hundreds/thousands per year on upgrading are the ones that have displays that are 2560x2048 native resolution or close to that. You only need to upgrade every year if you are hard core and want to play EVERY game at 1600x1200 or above with all enhancement settings at max/high.
So basically, the ps3 is a compromise alternative to the cheap PC. It will be suitable for those that only use a PC for e-mailing, chatting, and word processing. Surprisingly, there are still tons of people that do only this on a $1500 PC...
A PS3 is not and alternative for anyone that knows how to open PC case and install components. It is not an alternative for anyone that wants to install any software. It is not for anyone that likes to download Porn (if not for porn, PCs would take a hit). It is not for anyone that wants to use a PC for work or work related projects, etc...
I will agree that the article was written horrible, but it does have some validity. Maybe it was written horribly to confuse people and trick them into buying a PS3 thinking it is a replacement for a PC. Overall, it was too vague and misleading. The PS3 is a substitute for a PC as much as watching porn is to sex... They are related, but not the same and one is a sacrifice.
And please, no debates on the different reasons for watching porn and having sex. I know there are several for both, but I mean the main/most popular reason being sexual gratification. Heck, I have sex because of the health benefits and watch porn for analysis/discussion.

i really could not be bothered to read all of your post, although it was interesting i skimmed through and saw this. when you say pc for 700 do you mean comercail or just a pc. ok put it this way considering, you buy two controllers with the console, then 3 games, so now the price would be somewhere around 900 - 1000 dollards depending on what else you buy. so now the ituation is a little different, and i have to say i know many people who can make a very decent pc from ordering the parts off the interent and putting it together. maybe not as good as the ps3, but darn close.

Well, seeing as how all games are created because of the PC, and how it is ALWAYS a step ahead of any console, saying that the pc will die is a very ignorant statement. Even though the PC is always more expensive, it still does alot more than any console can.

Article had some validty you may be right but it shouldnt be taken serious.the statement that the "ps3 will make the pc obselete" is what many are taking offense to.Im impressed that you can web browse with the ps3 and it certainly has many other great capabilties but its not better than a PC in a versatitlity standpoint.

Although, a PS3 is better graphically (at that price, it better be), a PC has a lot more versatile capabilities, and a lot of games that you just wouldn't feel comfortable with on a console. Enough, that you could confidently say that the Sony President is an A$$ for even thinking the PC is at an end.

I meant a $700 PC at a store like best buy at retail price. A PS3 is a indirect substitute for this type of PC in that it can give you the basic functions of those and allow you to play current games smoothly.
As for building yourself, I mentioned that $1000 would be enough to get similar performance.

I built my Pc almost 3 years ago, it has a simple athalon 2500+ barton core, and it runs games like doom 3 and quake 4 just fine with my ATI Radeon card of the era, never had to upgrade it at all for what I need, just add more hard drives since i have so many movies and tv shows on there, the low costs of these things were irrelevant just little bits here and there, my PC for me is better than a stupid Ps3 since it can do more of what I want, and it will still play newer games just fine, and back then I don't think it was more than $600 for all the essential parts. So even when you factor inflation which would mean that $600 in 2003 was worth more than now, and yea, ps3 can still suck my balls.

I only sorta hate sony, but i do OWN TWO ps2s that work wonderfully right now, I just like to make friendly arguements, I don't think anyone goes too overboard, at least not that I have seen.
But yea its like ford vs chevy svt, it'll continue forever and ever, or until one of them disappears into bankruptcy :(
