OK, thanks. I read that page thoroughly. Both channels were set to PIO-only. I uninstalled both drivers and rebooted. The expected new hardware alerts came up. Then I checked again. Primary/Device 1 still showed PIO-only, so I set it to DMA-if-available, then uninstalled the driver, rebooted. Same result.
Now, after about 6 rounds of this, INLCUDING going to DVD/CD drives and uninstalling those drivers too for the last 4 rounds, it's still IDE/Atapi Primary/Device 1 PIO-only.
One unexpected result also has occured. I've been having trouble with my CD burner drive. My Computer has been showing 3 opticals sometimes, sometimes 4 or 5, and 2 (the correct number) sometimes: the DVD burner (always), a spurious non-existent SCSI CD drive sometimes, my real CD sometimes, and seeming dupes of the real CD sometimes. There's a long-ish thread about it I started here at Google Groups:

So now, after all these uninstalls, My Computer is showing ONLY the DVD!

He sounds like a noob with a willingness to add something to the forums, nothing wrong with that.
I have to go along with Connolly on this one, but I have noticed that some of the newbies are been very scathing.
