I have skimmed through a bunch of DVD copying guides on this web site. All of them seem to be overly complicated. This one works with basically all DVD's including ones with Sony copy protection. I do not promote DVD pirating, but only DVD backup. This is the way to do it if one wishes to backup their personal DVD collections.
Programs to use: (Just google them!!)
-DVD Decrypter
-RipIt4Me
-FixVTS
-DVD Shrink
-Nero (obviously for DVD Shrink to work)
All but Nero are entirely free.
All you have to do is fire up RipIt4Me and use the 1-Click mode. You will want to specify where you want the DVD files to go, and where the FixVTS.exe file is located. RipIt4Me automates the entire process. It does it all for you! The only thing you have to do is put in a fresh DVD-R disc when it completes. It will finish the process in DVD Shrink, and I am sure you can handle it from there. If you do not know how to use DVD Shrink I would disregard everything I said and stick to VHS format... Or just read DVD Shrink documentation :)

and did you notice how long it is? I would stop reading it after the first page. whos needs screenshots for every step. you do not need all of that info just to do what I said above.

Quote: -Nero (obviously for DVD Shrink to work)
Entirely untrue...you have already used DVD Decrypter for the ripping, why not create an ISO and auto burn with DVD Decrypter. Better yet, use this version of DVD Shrink and autoburn with Imgburn. Besides if Nero has been updated beyond 6.6.0.18 the autoburn feature won't work anyway.
Quote: If you do not know how to use DVD Shrink I would disregard everything I said and stick to VHS format...
That is what the guides with pics are for...makes it easier for some people.
And here is a simple guide for DVDFab Decrypter while we are at it...
1. insert your movie into drive and open DVDFab Decrypter.
2. Create a folder on your HDD to rip your movie to.
3. press start...wait...press finish.
4. remove movie from drive and insert blank.
5. Open movie in DVD Shrink, edit as needed and autoburn with Imgburn.

I vote for Arnie's guides, always clear to understand, easy to follow, guess I'm a supporter of Arnie, a member of Arnie's Army!
But, still the easiest to use is AnyDVD/CLoneDVD2.
I also use Ripit4me, Shrink and Nero, each person should use whatever works for them.
Keep up the good work Arnie.

Myself I like the screen shot of other peoples guides for the things I miss when doing it.Thats why I like arnie bears, $ Alkohols guides among others for extras I didn't know or would've never known were there. The simplicity they make for a person to back up their DVD'S and do it step by step [ to Quote another celeb on here to teach and learn ]is what makes this AD Forum so great. Happy Burnin Chris
Edit For simple fast and ease Theres always AnyDVD & Clone DVD2

Agree with you except I like to find out the hidden stuff in programs thats used by others that you don't see in the programs instructions because it's way down buried in some paragraph as an after thought or something added on to a program that I hadn't gone back for a update because it's been working right along. Quote: If you do not know how to use DVD Shrink I would disregard everything I said and stick to VHS format... Or just read DVD Shrink documentation :)
I get a kick out of that statement. Especially when it comes from a newbie to the site. Thinking your big time now because you know how to use DVD Shrink and if others do not know how to use it then stick with VHS.
I do not see how the guide above will help anyone. Except on what programs that you have used to back up your DVD. I give props for you trying but let?s look at what you have guided people to do.
Quote: All you have to do is fire up RipIt4Me and use the 1-Click mode.
Question a newbie might have - how do you use 1 click mode?
Quote: You will want to specify where you want the DVD files to go
Question a newbie might have - What files? and where should I put them?
Quote: and where the FixVTS.exe file is located
Question a newbie might have - where is the FixVTS located?
Then you say use DVD Shrink for the rest. You should know how to use it if you do not then you should stick to VHS.
How is this going to guide a newbie that is new to backing up DVD's which more then likely have never used DVD Shrink before or any of those other programs.
I dought you opened up DVD Shrink for the first time and new what to do from the start. So you should not expect anyone else to be able to do this. Your suggestion is if you do not know how to use DVD Shrink then do a search on DVD Shrink documentation. Allot of help your guide does when it tells you to go somewhere else on how to use a program. So what would be the point of using this guide if I have to find another guide to follow it? I would rather stick with a guide that will tell me how to use all the programs instead of using 1 that tells me to find another guide to learn how to use a program that you have suggested.
I guess the main point is you are flaming the other guides that go into great detail on how to set up and use the program. Unlike you that just have said fire the program up and put the files here and link the fixVTS exe, then finish with DVDShrink. If you can not follow this guide then stick to VHS.
Maybe you need to stick to using your own method of backing up DVD's and leave the guide making to people that actually take the time to make a guide that helps. (With screenshots)
I do agree with you that some Guides go into great detail that is not useful for a guide that newbie?s would like to follow to learn the basic of how to backup a DVD. But the problem about your guide is there isn?t enough information for newbie?s to follow.
As to another post you have said.
Quote: I would stop reading it after the first page
The sad thing about that statement is that it is true. Some newbie?s do stop reading after the first page or they just skim through the guide. That is why they keep having trouble with making a backup copy of their DVD's. So what is the point with (Jr, Sr., Addict member's) telling them to read this guide. When allot of the time they don't want to take the time to read it or skim through it. Then they come back and say it didn?t work.
You will never learn and become knowledgeable if you do not take the time to read and learn.

Why would you need a guide if you already know how to use the programs?
The guides on this site seem to be for people that... need guides. I'm not sure whats wrong with that, or how they should have written the guide.
I wouldn't visit a site who wrote guides for people who already know what they're doing.
Thats just stupid.

Yeah, Arniebear's guide is great.
Step by step guides are for people that have never used the software before. If I were unfamiliar with programs or new to something, I would love guides in step by step + screenshot format.
Not everyone is completely computer literate. Having a guide like that will ensure that there are less problems.

wow people are reading into this way too much. That's fine if you call me a newbie, I figure out plenty on my own without all these guides. 99% of the population probably wouldnt even know how to copy a DVD, let alone one with protection. And regarding to whoever said to just use AnyDVD and DVD Shrink (or whatever other program), it does not work all the time, it has failed plenty of times for me! All i wanted to do is simplify a process that a NORMAL computer user can understand. If you cant figure out what I meant by 1-CLick mode, than your just plain stupid in my opinion. I have never read any guide about any program unless its based on the command line with flags or options. GUI applications are designed for ease of use. The programs I listed are quite simple; they do not require much explaination. They also don't require a 10 page summary unless you have a lot of time on your hands. And also, someone noted to make it into an iso in DVD Decrypter? Why do I want to spend time making an iso when I already have the ripped files ready to be burned? If you can think of a faster way than good for you, this works for me.

Quote: And also, someone noted to make it into an iso in DVD Decrypter?
I was trying to keep your nice and tidy guide free...
Quote: All but Nero are entirely free.
Not everyone has access to Nero...and they probably don't want to run out the the store and buy a copy just because you recommend it. Perhaps you don't really know what your options with DVD Shrink are...you have four options when backing up your movies with DVD Shrink:
1. If you have Nero and have enabled burning with Nero. (Choose burner as backup target.)
2. Encode to HDD and manually burn with your preferred burning app. (Hard Disc folder)
3. Create an ISO instead of your VIDEO_TS folder containing video files. (ISO image file, this saves to HDD as does number 2)
4. Create an ISO image and autoburn with DVD Decrypter/Imgburn. (Self explanatory)
Quote: Why do I want to spend time making an iso when I already have the ripped files ready to be burned?
9 times out of 10 you are still going to need to use DVD Shrink to compress your files because your rip will be too big to fit onto a single SL disc. Even when ripped in Menu + Movie mode, the movie is likely to need compression and making an ISO doesn't take any longer than encoding to a VIDEO_TS folder.
Quote: That's fine if you call me a newbie, I figure out plenty on my own without all these guides.
You only got called a noob because of comments like these...
Quote: If you do not know how to use DVD Shrink I would disregard everything I said and stick to VHS format.

That is a pretty good attitude for someone who is trying to help others...don't think I want you trying to teach me anything...
Quote: I figure out plenty on my own without all these guides. 99% of the population probably wouldnt even know how to copy a DVD
...or maybe I should feel priveledged to be learning from someone smart enough to be in the top 1% of the population.

WOW!, seems like a lot of fireworks going on.
Let me give you my Expeirnce(s).
First of all, there are only three (3) programs that
you need. 1: DVD Decryptor (3.5.4.0), DVD Shrink (3.2.0.15)
and DVD Clone (yes a paid version- I will explain later).
Once you have decided to "burn" a copy of a DVD, the process is
really quite simple (even for 'flipper' discs).
Using the DVD Decryptor proggy, burn the 'decrypted' movie
to a file (normally decided by decryptor). Then use 'Shrink'
and open the vso file. ALL you have to do now is decide whether
you want to back up the 'entire disc' or 're-author' (ony the
main movie). Hmmmmm. sounds too simple for "newbies"?) Only if they
cannot read!!!!! Shrink will tell you what percentage of compression
will take place.
Now! using whatever "burning program" you have (I use Nero) burn the
DVD and loe and behold, it is done.
Now, what could be simpler?.
What about a 'flipper'?. well.... just decrypt both sides to your
hard drive and then start Shrink. Add side A movie only (re-author)
and then add side B. Shrink will then burn BOTH sides to a single
disc. Hmmmmmmm.. sounds so simplistic. But it beats Re-make pro
with all it's "show and tell and complicated screen shots" (it's not
worth the money).
Now,, why would I include Clone2? Simple, some movies will decrypt
just fine, until you try to use Shrink (Disney movies for an example)
Shrink will give you an error ('reading DVD VTS_VOB-01). Soooo.
now what? Use Clone to re-create the vts files and EITHER let
clone burn the disc, or tell it to burn to a specific folder.
Then use whatever burning program you have to burn the disc.
All three programs give the "newbie" up-front (on Screen) directions
to follow. None of the "guides" necessary (unless you want to
experiment and 'play' with the various optionsO
What's wrong with that?!!!
NOT A NEWBIE to burning.
Please Don't "flame" me because of this

@Plasmon
Using DVD Decrypter at times will not work. DVD Decrypter will work on most DVD's but it will not decrypt the new copy protected DVD structures. What do you expect newbies to do when they run into this problem?
Sooner or later you will need more then DVD Decrypter to rip a DVD.
As to this statement...
Quote: Using the DVD Decryptor proggy, burn the 'decrypted' movie
to a file (normally decided by decryptor)
First off you say burn the decrypted movie to file. I think you mean to rip the DVD to your Hard Drive. DVD Decrypter does not decied how the DVD is riped. The user makes that choice. You just happen to probably use the default setting.
I use DVD Decrypter/AnyDVD then DVD Remake Pro (For editing out stuff I dont want) and DVD-RB+CCE (to encode the DVD). But if I had to buy a software from slysoft (Which I did buy AnyDVD) I would Buy AnyDVD before CloneDVD2 and stick with DVD Shrink as the transcoder.
If you want to make a guide by all means that is great. Atleast make it so people can follow and understand it and make sure the correct information is in it.
I hope you do not feel that I am flaming just wanted to give a little input.

Now don't even go there. There are tons and tons of newbies surf here (AD) everyday looking for solutions to their problems and some of them probably haven't heard of RipIt4Me yet (i.e. DVD Decrypter and FixVTS). FixVTS needs to be extracted and put in C:\Program Files\Plugins in order for 1-Click Mode to function properly. In addition, FixVTS is the most important process of all because it simply clean out left over junks (corrupted cells, vts, etc.) So if all your saying is to use "1-Click Mode", then I'm pretty sure tons of newbies will be lost.
Quote: The programs I listed are quite simple; they do not require much explaination.
How can any everage joe (newbies) understand your guide without any details and screenshots at all?

If ANY DVD and Clone 2 failed for you many times thats simple one click after another means your in need of a guide since your not as savvy as your letting on. I'd like to know of the many times it failed you since I've got grand kids from 8 years old up that back up their new movies when they get them using AnyDVD and clone on their own.Simple is as simple does. Maybe not a newbie... but certainly not a nice person.
It doesn't matter how smart a person is, if they don't have a point of reference to frame the information they're being given, they will have trouble applying it.
You could take the most brilliant, and capable nuclear physicist, but if before he's recieved any formal training, you put him in front of a atomic super collider, he's not going to have any idea what to do.
Everyone here has at one point had to learn how to do what we're all here to do... make back-ups. Back-ups that we have (as far as I know) every right to make for personal use, but which has been maliciously made difficult by greedy companies who just want us to buy multiple copies when our kids scratch the hell out of their disney DVD's.
No one is ever stupid for not knowing how to do something. The word for that is ignorant, and while stupidity tends to lend itself towards ignorance... ignorance itself is most certainly not a sign of stupidity.
Anyone that doesn't know that is quite... ignorant... or to put it in the words of d1g1taltv, they're "stupid".
So what does that make d1g1taltv?

He sounds like a noob with a willingness to add something to the forums, nothing wrong with that.
