trust me ps3 is the way to go , i have a xbox 360 i love it but its more expensive then the ps3 if you want a true hd experice , 400+200 (yes u need addon otherwise no hd movies therefore not comparing vs ps3) thats 600 plus your loosing stuff say 40gb more wifi media card reader , plus theirs a revision in feb (hopefuly it'll have hdmi port) i mean ps3 is defo 1080p right off the bat while 360 soposesly you have to update the software ( krazy cuz a software doing more then hardware persay hdmi cable?) and fianly to use the 1080p for the 360 you HAVE to buy the vga cables .... seriously just do this WAIT after X-MAS go to your local costco OR http://www.costco.com/Common/Category.as...=BC|25429|49403 visit this costco website and buy your ps3 , once you have your ps3 if you dont like it after 3 or 5 yrs you dont have to sweat it you return it and you get your FULL CASH REFUND... not store credit cash!!! regardless of the months or years of use . incrediable return policy from costco applies to everyting in costco EXCEPT pc and notebook . yes tvs too :P oh and the only reason i own 360 is for the halo series besides that noting more .... so i'd get a ps3 if i had to choose between each but i will own both i just need ps3 :P:P

I am having trouble getting my PS3 to output in HD through a HDMI cable. Here is the problem:
- I connected my ps3 through HDMI Out to the TV HDMI In. I turned on the ps3 and wasnt receiving an audio or a video signal on any of the video tabs on the tv. I connected the ps3 through the cables it came with. I then went into the menu and went to settings.
- I selected Display Settings/Video Output Settings
- It says current output resolution: 480i
-I selected HDMI , and the text at the bottom of the screen says, "If setting is not correct the screen will go blank temporarily. Then after 30 seconds the system will go back to the previous screen."
- This is exactly what it does. It goes blank for 30 seconds and returns to that screen.
-Yes the HDMI cable is plugged in, and it was a $100 Monster HDMI cable so I assume it is compatible with the ps3.
I am lost and just want to play in HD. Thanks for any and all help. Maybe I have to buy a specific HDMI cable for the ps3?

Trust me bro, I went through exactly the same experience which can be described word by word as the same as yours. I got no success. The guys who I bought it from (in this case Best Buy, Canada) say it's because my HD TV is not capable of handling resolutions beyond 480i. So I had to return the product. I have now bought myself an HDDVD player, the new one from Toshiba. The results are awesome and to my liking. Of course I can't play any games on it, but what the heck....check your TV compatability....

After you selected HDMI on your PS3, did you change the input on your television set from AV to HDMI? Your ps3 is probably sending the signal, the TV just isn't detecting it because it's still reading from the AV PS3 Cables.

Ok, so I got the hdmi - > DVI cable. hooked it up and kept my component cable hooked up as well and I reset the ps3 to factory default 480i resolution (ew btw) and it pops up with a screen saying it has detected an hdmi cable and says would i like to use it. I click yes and switch to my dvi video setting on my tv and it flickers a second and stays at a black screen. Any ideas?

It could be that the PS3 is automatically setting your quality to 1080p when the max of your television is 1080i, thus creating an inaudible signal.
When the PS3 prompts you to switch to HDMI, click no and try to set it up manually. Go to the video settings on the PS3 and set the max resolution to 720p and then click on HDMI. Then switch your TV to DVI and wait for about 20 seconds. If you don't get a signal by then, switch your TV back to Component or A/V (whichever you had it at before) and set the max resolution to 480i and try again.
If that doesn't work then maybe you have a faulty DVI-HDMI converter. Hope this helps! :)

Thanks to all. I figured it out. While the screen went blank I had to change the TV to the HDMI setting which was accomplished by switching the video tab till I saw a signal. Thanks again all, what a difference!

Holy crap that makes so much sense... I will have to go buy the cable again because I brought it back lol.

HOLD ON!
I joined the site just to help ya out.
After conducting some research, i figured out the problem. It happened to me to.
Read all steps before conducting.
Steps.
1. Connect the PS3 using the standard AV Cable. (Make note you have to change the cables soon so don't make anything to fancy yet)
2. Have the HDMI cable ready to be connected to the PS3 (which means it's already connected to the TV, and not the PS3)
3.Open up the display setting menu, and select HDMI
4. A screen will prompt you warning you that you are changing the connections (for the better no?)
5. Before you click yes, understand you have 30 seconds to rip out the AV Cable and replace it with the HDMI. Also have your TV remote ready to switch to the HDMI input.
6. Hit X and rip the AV Cable out of the PS3 and insert the HDMI cable INTO THE PS3 (since it's already connected to your tv)
8. Flip to the HDMI input quickly! A new screen should pop up on your HDMI input saying "Do you want to accept this setting". Hit X once, fast. (Damn Sony for making me work so hard)
9. Run through the rest of the pages selecting your supported video resolutions, and even your audio setting. (I did my audio by auto setting)
If this doesn't work, try it again but get your fat ass moving faster.
You'll be thanking me the second you see that HD Clarity.

I've noticed that people have been dancing around this subject, but nobody has really answered it yet.
You DO NOT need an official PS3 HDMI cable. I got a $10 generic brand cable from my local Sam's Club and it works just as well as a $100 monster cable.

because I can't tell if it does
Yes, it supports up to 1080i.

Actually I answered this question already. See my post from December 20 - last post on Page 2 of this thread.

HDMI is digital. The HD AV cable is analog.
The Component video is still, probably, his best option if he doesn't have HDMI or DVI on his TV.
Also, I was not arguing that you hadn't answered the question previously, I was saying that you "danced around" the subject by not giving a straight answer. I figured that giving an easy to understand explanation would better accommodate the needs of those new to the PS3 scene.
Thanks for the info on the cable, though. I had to double-check before I realized that an HDMI to Component video cable didn't exist.
