the most likely problem is using low grade/inexpensive media. Taiyo Yuden,Verbatim and Sony are your best choice burning at 6x to 8x max. also it may be a format problem if you using the DVD plus R format try booktyping to DVD-ROM or use the DVD dash R format.
make sure you are burning on a clean machine without other programs running while burning and the most up to date firmware for your drive/burning

Wrong. I guess you know what assuming makes you? My backup plays just fine in all of my standalone players. If you have numerous copies that only play on your computer, maybe you should adjust your methods. Media would probably be a good place to start, IMO.
Edit: ZoSo beat me to the punch regarding media. Curses to my pitifully slow typing ability.

I use Sony DVD+Rs. I think Nero is automatically at FASTEST or whatever the standard was.
what is the difference with DVD+R and DVD-R?
so I should try burning between 6X and 8X
and
booktype to dvd-rom?
anything else?

-R and +R are blank dvd formats.
-R is typically widely acceptable in most standalones.
+R is the only one that can be booktyped to DVD-ROM for increased compatibility.

I guess people at electronic stores dont know much (Circuit City, Best Buy) because they said they're just about the same.
So the fact that I am using a DVD+R can be a reason why it wont play?
and "BOOKTYPING" to DVD-ROM may allow it to play?
This is the only movie I've ever had this issue with.
Another question.
If I already have the DVD ripped onto my hard drive, do I have to change the settings and then re-rip the DISC? or could i just adjust the settings when i burn the FILE(hard drive)?

You can adjust the settings to booktype before you burn ad burn no faster than 8x.

** for burners which have firmware that supports booktyping (bitsetting)
Running through tho... if it is only this film, with disks and process being unchanged them there is something else wrong.
ALWAYS try to burn another film on the same disks with exactly the same method before jumping to conclusions about disks, burners or standalone players.... especially with the "one click" rip/copy applications.

since the file is already on your HDD you really don't need nero recode to change it just use nero express to burn the file. click the options tab and you can change it to DVD-ROM if your drive supports it as said.
if you drive doesn't support booktyping nero express will look like this
if thats the case get the DVD dash R format (Taiyo Yuden,Verbatim or Sony) is what you want and burn at 6x to 8x max

I agree, VERY nice pics..
I usually use Recode to burn to the disc.
Since I wanted to be safe, I reripped the movie using DVDFAB (newest version) and then used dvdshrink to shrink it down (because I like to customize how the movie and extras are shrank) and then used DVDFAB to burn it to disc, using 6X speed and the DVD-ROM booktype.
it took a while for the dvd player to read it but it worked. I just let it play to the previews and then stopped it.
so here's another question.
On DVDFAB in the options, on the WRITE tab, it shows that you can change the booktype and what not (which is why i used dvd fab to burn), but if i rip it with dvdfab with those settings, would the booktype automatically be set and the dvd able to burn using another program (not needing to adjust the booktype to dvd-rom again)?
or does the booktype have to be on when BURNING the disc, not when RIPPING?

I'll have to consider swapping my +Rs to -Rs
if you copy a movie that was booktyped to a +R to another +R would you have to still worry about compatibility issues if it was not booktyped again?

BookType
(synonyms: bitsetting)
For DVD hardware to identify the type of disc that it is reading, it can check the Book Type Field located in the lead-in section of the disc. From here it can be determined if the media is DVD-ROM, DVD-RW, DVD+R etc. These few bits that help with the identification are known as "compatibility bitsetting". BookType manipulation has become important recently for increasing compatibility with certain DVD players, PS2 consoles and Xbox 360 consoles.
Some DVD Players will report a disc error if the inserted media is not read as "DVD-ROM", even though the player is capable of reading the disc perfectly. In most cases, updating the firmware of the DVD player fixes the problem permanently. With many DVD burners equipped with DVD burning software like ImgBurn, the booktype setting can be changed for the drive.
Quote: if you copy a movie that was booktyped to a +R to another +R would you have to still worry about compatibility issues if it was not booktyped again?
So to answer your question, Yes. If you are having compatability problems with the +R format, it doesn't matter what the disk was you copied from. What matters is what you set the disk to you are burning. Basically all you are doing when you booktype to DVD-ROM is fooling your player so that it will play instead of calling BS on the +R disk. Hope that made sense.

I know this thread has already advanced past what will rip Vantage Point. I found it interresting that I'm still using 4051 Beta and 4120 even though I have updates up to 5076 downloaded. 4120 and 4051 rip the move fine for me. Nero recode and DvD Shrink did'nt have a issue either.

Hey guys...
I used DVD Shrink, reauthored, selected the movie file only(Title 1), which showed 5.247gig. I clicked backup, ignored the warning of not being able to burn it onto a disk and shrunk to 4.53gig.
I then used shrink again, but this time told it to shrink the files i had just shrunk and saved into another directory ...\vp.
when shrink finished, i inserted a blank disk and now I have a perfect copy of Vantage Point ( HEY PRESTO )

what did you have to do to get it working with ripit4me? Mine is stuck at 94% but has just been stuck there for about a half an hour or so now just inserting dummy sectors.

As long as you have AnyDVD ver 6.5.2.2. active, dvdshrink will read and encode the movie.
just do as i said, shrink and then shrink the files on HDD again
