For now don't use it. You can replace it with a new DVD writer for about 25 bucks.

It's a few years old. Not worth the time or effort and most likely it's just had it. Like I said for about 25 bucks you can replace it.
Search on Newegg.com.

Seems pretty clear to me, DMA is on and also the burner is at first saying it can recognise the disks (RITEK) then later on in the burn log it states "Disc not present"

re-read dialysis1's comments above, it could be that the burner's on it's last legs.

No, most burners are around the £25 dollar mark i think (i'm in UK but i read a lot). They're dead easy to fit yourself, there's even nice pictorial guides out there showing how easy it is.
e.g. here's some annoying guy with a video on how to do it - http://video.about.com/pcsupport/dvdburner3-mov.htm
(i didn't listen past him saying 'Hi' but i'm sure it'll show you what you need).
But maybe you have a friend who can lend you a burner just to prove if that's the problem, before spending any money

Every burner listed has free 3-business day shipping. I'm in texas and had some of mine come in 2 days. Besides, newegg is located in california.

One thing I Noticed is that you are using alot of memory, (don't know if anyone else caught it. Didn't read the whole post). When ripping, burning DO NOT MULTI-TASK. Close out any programs that don't need to be running. Also I Suggest you Add More Memory, After You Get Your New Burner.

Well there is always a way to fix anything. Whether you can and is it practical (and economical) is another question (in reality only the manufactuer could conceivably repair it).
The most realistic solution is to repace the burner.

I live in New York. I have ordered items from Newegg and had them the next day and that was with free shipping. If you order in the morning, it will be out on a truck before the end of the day. 25 dollars will get you a nice one.

Exactly; and like Dialysis said, 25 bucks will land you a pretty good burner.
At this point, what is there to lose?

HP burners... bah.. total junk..
Lots of processes running.. it's probably eating up 300MB's just loading all those damn desktop icons. I shudder to think how much is running in the background.. and how many trojan backdoors from limewire (if it is on the desktop it is set to connect on boot)
I had a look on lw and saw somebody with a C:\blah blah..\desktop file which looks very much like that ;) No admin password and a dictionary cracked user pass.. hehehehe

That Lite-On 20A4P-04 will work better than the HP 840B.
