I like your theory of the moniters killing them. Heres my idea with that starting point, tell me yours If you want.
The forerunners knew the flood existed so they built the halo's as a last resort. Along with the halo's they built the highly sophisticated (if not somewhat dilusional) AI's, the moniters. They were supposed to take orders from the forerunners and keep the halo's in check in case they had to be used.
The forerunners fought back with the help of their sentinals and were on the verge of winning the war, the halos would never have to be used. The moniters evolved and became self-aware. They did not have to take oreders from a less superior being. The moniters activated halo (in halo CE the moniter was not allowed to perform this task but nobody said he wasnt able to)and reporgrammed the sentinals.
The way the forerunners urvived is somewhat like papa_face's theory. The forerunner had already sent embrios of forrunner to earth etc.

How could've the covenant activate Halo i thought Only humens (forruners reclaimers whatever) could since Tarteraus had to use Miranda to well try to activate Halo, can somebody tell me again how to spell Tartaraus or however you spell it

It's Tartarus. The Covenant cant activate the Halo's by themselves, thats why they need the humans.

we are ordering a new one from gamefly and we ae gunna swap them, then ill finish it.

ok ok.. wait, my halo knowledge is not sharp either.. anyway..
do you think forerunners were actually evolved humans of some sort and they developed the flood through scientific experiments (maybe developing the SPARTAN prject or something) and built the halos as a fail safe, to be sent back in time and activated if necessary in case the experiments went completely wrong.. and like andy said, the monitors programmed to activate the halos just in case..
the forerunners would need the monitors to do this because they could get infected to and no one would be left to activate the halos.. thats why the monitor and sentinals started killin the covenant and humans (or jus MC) because they were potential flood threats t be infected.. or does all tht jus sound stupid from a confused person??

No it sounds alright but i really hate the idea of time travel it gets very confusing after awhile

I think that the story that we have been told so far in Halo is true i.e. about the forerunners discovering the flood etc. However when the monitors were created, they were used to study the flood. This happened over hundreds of years. This made the monitors become rampant (similar to Cortana). The forerunners began to notice this however it was to late. Since the monitors were all created at the same time, they became rampant at the same time, overwhelming the forerunners. The forerunners were killed. As the monitors were highly sophisticated they did not deteriorate as rapidly as AI's do in the Halo books. The monitors cared for the forerunners, and as a form of respect for them they changed their names to represent their murderous acts. 343 Guilty Spark means he is Guilty of something. 2401 Penitent Tangent means that he feels remorse for killing the forerunners. Unlike regular AI's in their state of rampancy the monitors continued to work as if the forerunners were still alive; they looked after and studied the flood.
In Halo 2 343 Guilty Spark said that the halo?s were activated and the forerunners died as planned. This in my theory was merely a cover story for the remorse we feels.
Not one of my strongest theories, and its pretty short. If anyones got any questions about it I'll answer them.

Yes the flood can infect the covenant. They can be infected and become warrior forms or carrier forms. The carrier forms contain the infection forms that infect other organisms. The flood infect for their survival. I dont quite understand what you mean by "why would they kill themselves?" please explain. It is important to note that only organisms with sufficient calcium stores can be used as hosts.

Once again somthing so obvious that i missed but i feel like i knew it the whole time. "Guilty Spark, Penintent Tangent" ahh thank you again for adding to the pool of halo theries papa_face. Just for the people who didnt read first strike heres somthing interesting. Srgt Johnson was attacked by infectious flood but didnt mutate or turn into flood. To answer the people who are wondering why he didnt turn its because he has (i dont have my first strike book right now soo this isnt 100% accurate but its the jist of it) like a disease or disorder and that is why papa_face always say "with sufficant calcium stores". Basically Johnson doesnt havee sufficant enough calcium storage in his body for the flood to survive therefore he can get "bit" by them and remain human.

Unfortunatly the reasons for Sergent Johnson not being able to become infected are wrong. The reasons why he cant be infected is because he has boren's syndrome. Boren's Syndrome scrambles the signals in the nervous system, therefore the flood cannot infect him, because they tap into the nervous system when they "take control".

well i dont about you guys but I'm amazed.. just look at how much detail the writters, artista and designers of halo went into it.. even all the way to how and why the flood infect.. truly facinating..

The forerunners are the characters in Marathon correct? If soo who is there enemy and is there anything of the flood in Marathon.

i thought that the covenant by letting off the halo they would die with it, what creature would bring itself to that? but then the whole religious side of things..

islamic fundamentalist and overreligious's are the problems, most muslums i know are wonderful people. i dislike catholics cuz they force themselves up everyones asses.

Yeah as bntyhntr said, they dont think that it will kill anyone.
P.S Not to be rude, but can we stop talking about other religions. I myself am an atheist but some people may find what some people have just said offensive.

well if anyone has herd of or collects a minature hobby game called Gamesworkshop, Warhammer 40k.. and theres a race on there called the TAU.. anyhow my point is, they follow the 'greater good' too.. they have higher figures called ethereals who preach this and send them to battle etc.. Im jus saying its a similar set up to the covenant in halo, their actions are for the greater good and they have the prophets (cant remember what they're called sorry..) preaching the same thing to them.. its just a way to control mixed races as a group and have order within, nothing religious or however it seems, sort of like a government..
