kamuixtv used our news submit to tell us that a new DVD copy protection has been created, which stops software such as DVD-Decrypter and DVDfab from making a copy of the disc. The company Asian Media has made it so that the new Edge9 copy protection hangs DVD-decrypter when it tries to decrypt the CSS encryption from the DVD.
The development of the technology originally came from a protection they had developed for VCD's, though initial results weren?t very good on the DVD format. A breakthrough came during February where they found a balance between protection and playability. DvD's protected with this may not play on first generation dvd players or the PS2. More info can be found HERE
In 1999, DVD Jon has broken the CSS (Content Scrambling System) code that made DVD's easier to copy. Since then "illegal" DVD-copying became casual. Foreign shows became dominant, distribution are by means of VCDs and DVDs. The street price of a pirated pressed DVD is only $1.15 (US) with only 15 cents as a capital per disc. In 2002, Asian Media developed a copy-protection for VCDs but this format is becoming obsolete.
The following year they experimented DVDs that is unreadable on DVD-ROM just like what they did in VCDs. These past three years, DVD Edge-9 project became on and off because of unsatisfactory results. They also noticed the behavior of some traders, they tend to avoid copy-protected VCDs. They want to share or perhaps trade it again to another person. The last week of February made satisfying results. The experimental disc is unreadable on DVDDecrypter by LightningUK. Edge-9 will prevent DVD/FAB Decrypter to defeat the CSS code

During the development of DVD. The Consortium questioned if DVD-Video will be playable on computers. They concluded that it must be because it was designed for its versatility. The decision made DVD vulnerable to hackers. In 1999, DVD Jon has broken the CSS (Content Scrambling System) code that made DVD's easier to copy. Since then "illegal" DVD-copying became casual. Wow.........talk about biting the hand that feeds them! There's going to be a plenty of mighty p/o'd people. I'm sure not replacing my players.
May or may not play? I guess one just keeps returning them to where you purchased/rented. The poor people that own video stores, it will put them out of business.
Of course, there will be follow throughs of class action suits against the makers of dvd players? After all THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO PLAY DVDS!!
One other thing that really bugs me, what about our environment? More junk for the landfills. A throw away society isn't exactly "earth friendly". These big corporations never think about this, just the almighty $$$$$$.
Simple solution same as what was recommended with Copyprotected CD's Bring them back To BESTBUY or whoever you bought rhem from ! tell them it won't work woth your Video IPOD ! Or Better yet Boycott Those disc & The Studios that put them out ! Or get cable & or Satellite & a set Top recorder ! more then one way to skin a cat as it were ( not Lterally Catfreak I like cats just fine) If either they get too many returns or loose market share because of this They'll get the message ! also BESTBUy & all The DVD selling outlets are'nt going to immediately Return all their currenty dvd's for the ones with the DVD Edge9 Copy Protection ! economically speaking it's not cost effective so Good old copyable dvd's will be around for sometime to come ! And never underestimate mans ingenuity ! If someone comes up with a measure there will soon be a counter measure ! But Good information To Know Forewarned is forearmed right ! Happy Burning !!

People, forget about it. If this DVD Edge9 Copy Protection will not play on all certified players it is against the DVD specification and no studio (or anyone of importance) will care.
And if the DVD can be played on a PC, AnyDVD will take care of it. :-)
There will always be someone that cracks these protections. It started with DVD Jon cracking the CSS code, then came all the tools that can be used to copy dvd's. It will be the same with this copy protection scheme. Except we already have the tools to do it we just have to adapt to them.
