It's hard to imagine that Sony, a company that continues to actively block unlicensed applications on the PSP, will welcome the homebrew community with open arms when it ushers in the PlayStation 3. But, according SCE network system development manager Izumi Kawanishi, the console will ship with a built-in Linux OS, complete with compilers and other tools. It would seem that Sony is indeed inviting homebrew enthusiasts to develop basic applications and game content. Just don't expect Sony to provide technical support or access to SDK libraries, as these privileges are reserved for licensed developers.
While Linux support on the PS3 has been known for some time, this latest revelation implies an added value to the console, which in turn could justify the exorbitant price tag for some. The question is, will mainstream consumers ignore this key feature?

i personally think its great that sony have linex running on their console, but there is a massive price to pay for this, it has been proven that, the os of xbox 360 only uses up somehting like 5% of the power of the triple core processor, but the os (linex) for the ps3 uses up 25% (or something clsoe to that number) of the power from the cell chip. this basically justifies what i keep saying whcih is that although sopny have some great things inside fo the ps3, its like they did not think how they would put everything together, the architecture of the ps3's inside is very bad.

linux is really close to osx and is fully customizable, and can run basically any program
you will also be able to run windows and mac os(x) on the ps2 as well though, i heard ken kutaragi say it yesterday on ps3updates
so since you like osx, use it on the ps3
currently have these consoles
Gamecube
Xbox
Ps2
Dreamcast
Phantom
Gba
psp

rabbity :Would you care to post a link? I didn't think so.I seriously doubt it will take up 25% percent of a cpu which has the equivalent of running 8 3.2 ghz processors at the same time.Besides it's not going to be in use while playing games unless they are homebrew games.Xbox 360 hardly has an os at all.

What i heard is that one of the SPEs will be reserved for the OS.
Quote: Only seven SPEs are active; the eighth is redundant, to improve yield. If one of the eight has a manufacturing defect, it is disabled without rendering the entire unit defective. Additionally, one of the seven active SPEs is reserved for use by the system's OS, leaving six SPEs directly available to applications.Quote: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playstation_3

That would be 12.5% which sounds a little more realistic. But see that's the thing if you follow that link to the os part.It says it's unknown wether the os will be used all the time or what exactly it will be used for.
My feeling is that ps3 can probably run games without the use of linux but who knows. If true though that would mean linux wouldn't be running while the games are running.

Well if it's not then we wont be loosing all of that 12.5% although i'm sure you'll have some programmers that won't bother with using the SPE for the os to help run their appz

Ok this one will take sometime to answer but i'll simplify it to the max. tell me if i over simplify
OS - operating system e.g. windows xp, linux and osx
OSX- the opperating system commonly use by the Apple co. Macintosh computers (and i say commonly because other os can be run on macs). It's the ten version and was rewitten based on an older os call unix.
Linux- a mostly open source os also somewhat based on unix.
Spe- synergistic processing element. This is a part of the very complicated cell that sony uses in the ps3. Basicall it's a group of processors that work together and along with a general purpose processor. They can either share the work load or do compelely seperate processing functions. In the case of ps3 it has 7 SPEs that are used and the core processor. Thats as simple as i can explain that cause i usually going into some cray detailed discussion when it come to the cell.
Hope that helped

"Sony should either use knoppix, Fedora, or SUSE. they are the best"
According to who? The general population of gamers has never even heard of linux much less those. They would be using windows if xbox didn't exist but since it does they went for linux. The os's you listed don't even have a market share much less "are the best" they don't even have the market of linux which aint saying much because linux has what 2%.Still bored!
Sony has stated it want's to encourage independent developer's for apps and homebrew. How many developers write for the os's you listed? How many servers would be up for ps3.Still bored!
If there so Great then why hasn't anyone heard of them? Why isn't there any drivers for them?
Answer those that should keep your hands busy.

@tycobb knoppics, fedora, and suse are only for v.i.p.s of the computer world lOl. but linux is a great and unique it opens up alot of possibilities for videos and downloads, and (i think) this will make the system prety hacker proof so we won't see anygames turning into halo2
