hahahahahahaha, yea the E6300 was perfectly stable at 3.4ghz with 1.3v
but the Q6700 takes much more voltage to get there and still isn't stable.

just for kicks, shall i put the E6300 back in this motherboard and try getting to 3.8ghz? LOL

Don't forget the extra cache of the quads boosts their per-core speed too. At identical clock speeds (3.15) my Q6600 outpaced my E4300 by about 12%, so really, your Q6700 at 3.2Ghz is already your E6300 at 3.6Ghz, and there's twice as many cores!
Don't be afraid to raise the voltage. There are limits, but you're being over-cautious at the moment.

ok, let me try 1.5v and see where that gets me...
tested: 1.48v 3500mhz not stable
1.48v 3400mhz stable

Sam,
Is C1E turned on, or do you have it underclocked for a reason? It should be on the 9x CPU multiplier and 1.8GHz. Just asking!

C1E is turned on, I didn't see any reason to turn it off, remember it's only a file server.

I know that but I was questioning the 6x multiplier, and C1E was the answer!

well i think 3.2ghz is probably the best this cpu can do...@ 1.34v
its perfectly stable at this voltage and speed but anything more requires a lot more voltage
for example: 3.4ghz takes 1.44v to be 100% stable.

i hate this Q6700!!!!!!!!!!!
it has to be the worst quad core overclocker EVER!!!!!!!!

i am gonna sell my q6700, get a q9650, and call it a day...

anyone wanna buy my q6700?

LOL, quite right, You don't smack talk your hardware when you're trying to sell it!
The Q6600 I had wasn't as good as your 6700 was, but I reckon I could have got it a bit further with 2 sticks of memory.
With the newer batches, Intel absolutely destroyed the overclocking on the Q6 series. Presumably it was deliberate to force the 9 series on people instead.

Well, it wasn't really smack talk if someone is only looking for 3.2ghz out of it...hehe.

But yea, I agree, I probably should have kept my mouth shut.

When I was trying to overclock, I had no intention of selling the chip so it really didn't matter what I said about it.

What do you guys think is a fair price for a Q6700 nowadays?
I have the original box and the original heatsink/fan, unused (you need the fan for warranty purposes).

im1992,
When I sold my E4300, I told the person who bought it how far I had overclocked it, I just didn't whip out my machete and chop it to little pieces though! LOL!!

chop2113,
I would like to point out that the Q8200 has a 7x multiplier. That does not bode too well for overclocking! Just a thought to consider!

So far from what i see i would have to have a high FSB to get the overclock putting strain on my mobo. Im at 425Fsb or 1700mhz at the moment and memory at 1133mhz. I can probably do 450*7 and do 3.150 which should'nt be to bad.

actually a 7x multiplier isnt bad at all
i got to 3.4ghz stable with a 7x multiplier...(e6300)
if the chip can do the speed, then the multiplier is of little importance

no dont have the chip yet. Thats the info im getting from research. Now i just found someone with my same mobo pushed it to 3.3 at 7*475
with a vcore of 1.26 and temps at 55c max across the the cores under prime stress testing.. Ohh sorry those settings are what im running at the moment with my E8400..

From what I've heard the Q8200 will go as far as your Q6700 did, and remember the 45nm architecture is 10-15% faster per mhz, probably closer to 10% with the 8000s. It'll be faster than your current chip if it even makes 3Ghz, and it should make it to at least 3.2.

im1992,
What was the FSB of the chip? The Q8200's is 1333, and would take a 429MHz fsb to get to 3.0GHz. To get to 3.4GHz it would take 486MHz, which can cause problems with the memory speed depending on the MB, memory multipliers and such.

Depends on the board, 455FSB is the limit for older, more basic boards. 505 for most P45s.
