Here's the article from today's IHT:
http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2006/09/0...PlayStation.php
Quote:
Sony's upgrade video-game console PlayStation 3 will be delayed until March in Europe, but will go on sale in November as planned in the U.S. and Japan, the executive in charge of the project said Wednesday.
The sales delay is caused by a problem in mass producing a key component in the Blu-ray disc laser part of the machine...
From Ken Kutaragi: 400,000 units for the US launch...
Quote:
But far fewer machines will be available for the launch dates in Japan and the U.S. because of the production problem, Kutaragi said.
In the U.S., about 400,000 PlayStation 3 machines will be available when they go on sale Nov. 17. About 100,000 will be available on the Nov. 11 Japan launch date.
OUCH! I'll check with FYE today to see if my preorder still has a pre-Christmas ETA. It will probably be delayed too.

I think Sony is forcing this launch because they have made promises to game publishers and movie studios who are supporting BluRay.
They underestimated the competition for the diodes. This year they have their own standalone BD player launch plus those from Pioneer and Panasonic. You also have the PC drive manufacturers.

That's a good point. Not even sure how they over looked the obvious lol. From a bussiness stand point I would delay the stand alone before I would the ps3 and use the additional diodes from the stand alone to help out the ps3 launch.Your right though they should have known this and foreseen it.After all they are the founder of bluray, call me crazy...

Don't forget it's the same diode used by HD-DVD drives and Toshiba is releasing it's European models this Novemebr. Plus LG and Sanyo are also making BluRay players too. That's a lot of competition.

:( At least the european date will have more games / less bugs.
It's annoying though, because Sony has HUGE european ps3 support this time round, certainly in games, such as heavenly sword and the getaway.

Maybe they should launch in Europe first - so we get more games and less bugs here in the US. LOL!

I checked with FYE today. The guy at the counter checked with a supervisor and I was informed that now they can't guarantee the ETA of any of the pre-orders they got. They asked me if I wanted my $50 deposit refunded - I said not yet.

hmm... i think i might wait for the second wave of the PS3's to come out. I dont really trust the first release cuz there might be problems. Cuz i heard on the news a couple of weeks ago that hella(like 100,000+) brands of laptops were recalled cuz they had faulty overheated chips made by SONY. ohhhh could the PS3 suffer the same fate?????
PS3...it only does everything(that Sony allows it to)

Ok am already talking in two threads talking about this and 1 of them got closed. But I'll post here too.
Ps3 comes out Japan on November 11 and in North America on November 17. North america being Canada too :)So I think all of NTSC.
Also I guess all of "PAL territories " dont get their copies until march 2007. Which include Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Africa and Australasia.

i want to know how they think they know the us console number in the link up there that
dblbogey7 gave us.
either way i could care less, i'll have a ps3. i live in the us. i just need cash.
But they all do sort of the same thing, and that is rearrange what you thought was real, and they remind you of the beauty of very simple things. You forget, because youre so busy going from a to z, that theres 24 letters in between... You turn on... tune in... and you drop out...

Speaking to AP, he [Ken Kutaragi] said that two million units would be shipped to the US and Japan by the end of this year, thereby slashing the original figure by half. Just 500,000 machines will arrive at launch with Japan reportedly earmarked to receive 100,000.
500K at launch - 100K for Japan = 400K for North America
I wonder how the Japanese are reacting to this especially on the eve of TGS. This is probably why Sony was a practical no-show in Leipzig. They probably knew at that time that they had to give Europe and Australasia the middle finger.

alright. i also found the original ign article.

a quote:
"The North American number is just below what we had available at launch for PS2 and is
higher than what Microsoft had for Xbox 360."
you think sony is gunna keep several thousand ps3's for ebay selling? maybe pay people on
their payroll to sell them with personal accounts, ad give a console to that person when a
sale is made.

I wouldn't be surprised if these go for $2K or more on EBay.

Sony HOPES to ship 2 million by the end of 2006. I don't know how many for North America and how many for Japan.
Quote:
Kutaragi said other preparation work on the machine was going smoothly, including the "cell" next-generation computer chip. Mass production of the machine is set to start end of September, he said.
Although Sony had initially counted on shipping 4 million PlayStation 3 machines worldwide by the end of the year, that will likely fall to 2 million, he said.

I guess Sony might lower the price in Europe and Australia to make up for the shortages, at least something to make up for it. But if they don't, then I will be angry...
