Successfully modded the SPCH 70012 With modifications to your cardboard and straw mod.
Tools:
Straw and Wrapper
Tape
Playing Card
Ball up the wrapper of the straw for spot "A"
Just put it on the left side of the sensor.
I just taped "B" to the side. Make sure it doesn't touch the disk as it spins.
Spot "C" I cut the card into a slice. Place card slice between the two round structures at the back. Not between the structure and the metallic spring as before. Once Lens moves then I taped the card in place.

this method worked after 6 hours. at first i didn't get what gap u were talking about. But, when i got it i shoved the straw down the gap and got the sensor. I taped it and done! To all the suckers who couldn't finish the method-ur real lazy. I didn't even need to buy any software. It did use alot of my nerve though.

Howcome you posted 2 identical messages :s
I suggest trying the method here, cos it's non-invasive. Worst comes to worst, you find it doesnt work on a v15 and have to get a chip if ya wanna play backups.
Rich guys buy games, they don'nt need free ways to play games!
Think my Ps2 is a v15, will check when I get discharged tomorrow. From what I remember, this works on my PS2, but I couldn't get cogswap or something (the program with a starry bg) to work. cud just be that it's a PAL PS2.
Hope this helps, and I apologise if it doesn't, that will be the morphene talking!
On a side note, whatever that free program is called that has a starry bg, why mite that not work? I do as I am told, but when I put my proper PS2 disk in (have tried a few!) it comes up with a red bg and an error (Cant quite remember, it was a while ago!)
Well, that message killed 10 minutes. Ohmy, it's gonna be a long night!

ATTENTION ALL!
I have attempted this mod on my v15 (77001) and it has... Worked :)
Theres no new modding etc, instead of using cardboard for the disc brake sensor, i rolled up a piece of paper from a cd cover and shoved it in the hole above the brake, worked fine. easier too. no tape needed.
the straw is a pain though, took me 2 months to do that :P

What does he mean he he shoved it in the hole above the brake. Is that the inside that you normally tape down???? Eh???? If not the straw method, what's the other method????

I use the cardboard & straw mod to play back-up psx games.
I...
temporarily remove the front lid sensor blocker
turn the ps2 on
go to "browser" in the main menu
put a psx game in and put the sensor blocker back on
(when the ps2 shows the game as a playstation1 disc)
slowly press down on the disc, and replace it with the psx backup
navigate over to the psx game in browser, and the game starts
I thought this info might be useful to some.
Is there a psx media player I could use with this method, or could I use SMS media player on a cd? I would really like to use something like SMS, on the ps2, but without the over expensiveness of swap magic, or the complicatedness of Action Replay Max. I'm hoping that I wont have to load cogswap with AR max every time I want to play a backup, or watch a video/listen to music.

No there isn't any other way, its either use an exploit or get swap magic.
Swap Magic actually isn't that expensive. It's only about $25 to get it and then its only one swap to exchange discs.
And you can launch files from your usb flash drive etc or mc with it by simply pressing a shortcut key if you wish such as R1, R2 etc.
Personally I think its better than the Ar Magic way and less swaps.
