I also believed the same thing, yet I came across this site that claims to ship the lastest HDLoader version on a pressed disc (if you read the FAQ you'll see that they explicitly say it's pressed). They also denounce HDAdvance for essentially ripping them off like you said.
http://www.hdloader.org/ps2order.asp
Seems attractive enough. I don't yet own it but the other alternative would be to buy a Swap Combo (w/ Slide card) and PS1 game, in that way retaining the ability to update HDLoader regularly through MC exploit. I'm a little torn because I'm not fond of the slide card and the not so straight forward route required to create a bootable HDLoader from MC (using the PS1 game).

Not all games are compatible with HDLoader so it's a good idea to have Swapmagic anyways so you can still play the games that aren't compatible with HD

Hmmm looks like someone has started pressing it again, dunno how likely you are to get it though. It does look to be the latest version as well.
ARMAX would be the easiest way to install the exploit, but Swap Magic might cost less than ARMAX, and Swap Magic you could use to boot backups as well.

You can buy Swapmagic for alot less than that site wants for Hdloader..
and find an old PS1 game at a yard sale for $1 or 2

Hi, another dumbass newguy here.
I've spent hours researching the net before posting, but I'm trying to install the Exploit on my PS2, which is the newest of the old fatass ones (2004). I've already got a hard drive and a real version of the original HD Loader, and nothing else.
My question: since I have no memory card reader, no SwapMagic or FlipTop, and no modchip, CAN IT BE DONE? Some people out there say all you need is HD Loader but never follow through with directions. I already supposedly have the filepack with Titleman and Boot.elf and all that other crap, but with nothing but HD Loader by my side, I don't understand how I'd get my PS2 to read any CD I might burn to get files onto my memory card.

Use the independance exploit installer/compiler. Get it to create an install CD. Use WinHIIP (on yr PC!) to install the .ISO to the PS2 HDD. Boot with HDLoader. Run independance installer. Boot with PS1 disk, yr away!

Ok, let me get this straight:
You're telling me to transfer an ISO image of an install CD straight to my PS2 hard drive through WinHIIP? I can do that. Then once that's done, you're saying that if I boot up HD Loader, the ISO will appear in the game list and all I have to do is click on "Play", then kick back and watch the program do its thing and transfer all the stuff to my memory card?

Hmm, makes sense. I guess it would be the only way, since my unmodded PS2 can't read burned CDs. I take it you've done this before?
Last question: where do I get this "Independence Installer/Compiler"? Or can I just make the ISO myself with all the key files?

Yep. Try google "Independence Compiler" (it's the first hit...), as i do not know this forum's rules on linking. You want 5.0b1.

Allrighty Moose, I got the PS2 Exploit Utility 5.0 (Independence Compiler was apparently its former name) over at Console.IsCentral.net and here's what I did:
- Added 3 game IDs to the TITLE.DB
- Added one ELF file: HDL_7C.ELF (I assume this is version 7C of HD Loader? That's the point of this install for me)
It then created a new folder containing 3 files -- IsCentral.bin, IsCentral.cue, and IsCentral.toc -- which I then burned with Nero to an .nrg CD-ROM image.
Did I do everything right? When I try to transfer the image over with HDL Dumb, nothing happens, and when I use WinHIIP it just crashes. Sorry to keep bugging you but the instructions over at Console.IsCentral.net are buggy, much like the rest of the site.

Crunchy:
With the HDL Dumb method, how did you run the server on the PS2 to connect to? I presume you didn't, that's why that didn't work. You don't need to bother putting HDLoader on the memory card; it just takes up room there. Put it on the hard drive at a later date. To that end, try making another .bin file with no elf's and no dummy file, standard LaunchELF - as compatible as it gets. When you say WinHIIP crashes, at what stage? I have had WinHIIP saying sector 00000000 was unreadable on hard drives that work perfectly in PC's, and that seems like WinHIIP has crashed (actually it just takes ages to time out or something). In which case, try another drive! You will need HDLoader pressed disks for this (but i said that in a previous post ;) ), so when you boot with them, what happens? Have you tried loading a pressed disk onto your 'station? with HDLoader? If that doesn't work, its definitely the HDD! All this effort, you may as well go with the new version of HDLoader, 8B, rather than 7C, but load it onto the HDD with the FTP mode of launchelf once that's running from the memory card.

Oh yeah, and don't burn the disk - WinHIIP copes with .bin files perfectly - i had problems when it's burnt to disk as well.

WinHIIP crashes after I highlight the file and click "Install" or whatever: I immediately get that generic error screen that asks whether or not I want to send feedback.
As for HDL Dumb, I actually got it to install after I filled out both the Name AND Startup fields (previously, I'd only entered a name), but it didn't result in a bootable file. You asked "How did you run the server?" Not sure I get the question, but I just hooked up the PS2 HD to my computer with a standard IDE cable. Not sure what a "pressed disk" is either, but my unmodded PS2 can't read burned stuff at any rate. I can't imagine my HD's a problem since so many games already work on it.
Anyway, I'll try creating another folder without the new HD Loader in it, but I don't see how that'd keep my WinHIIP from crashing.
