no i just changed the DNS setting on the PS3. by the way, did you mean to put in my router's local IP as the primary DNS or its public IP (like what you would see at http://whatismyip.com/)? i tried both and neither allowed my computer to recognize the PS3 as a device to share media with. also, half the time whenever i test a new setting and search for media servers from my PS3, my wireless connection goes out and i have to reset my whole router configuration.

Local IP. Like my network settings on my ps3 are IP=192.168.1.101 my pc is 192.168.1.100 my default gateway(router) is 192.168.1.1 and my primary dns is 192.168.1.1 while I leave the secondary all zeros. I did the same to my pc as well. I had to do both my pc and ps3 in order for it to work. If that doesnt work for you try a belkin wireless g router. It works perfect for me and it was cheap($40) but I think that should work for you

Where do I go to change the DNS settings on my pc (Windows XP)? I didn't do that and maybe that was my problem.

Open your control panel and look for network connections. Right click on local are connection then go down to properties. Highlight internet protocal then click properties and a menu will come up allowing you to input your information. Not only will this give you a static ip but it should allow you to finally use your media server. If for some reason you have connection problems do the steps I mentioned again and set everything back to auto. Make sure you set all of your ps3 settings manually as well so that you have a static ip fotr the ps3
