Can't go wrong with DVD Shrink 3.14, DVD Decrypter. Both programs are free. I've burned with CloneDVD and Nero with great results. Don't forget that burnatonce 0.99b can do dvd movie backups too and it's free.

I paid $6.00 at Fry's for DVDXCopy Xpress. I love it, it's FAST, and always burns good. The only problem is, you can't make a copy of the backup, UNLESS someone can tell me how.
I tried copying the backup with DVDXCopy, and DVDShrink and I had no luck. Anyone have any suggestions?
I am now using DVDShrink with great success, but I still have a problem. See following post from me.
Thanks = Cajun

As I said previously, I am now using DVDShrink.
Can anyone please tell me how to delete the warning once I get into the authuring section?
Does the warning have a specific name to it in the list of files?
Thank You = Cajun

I am closing every application (including internet access, firewall, antivirus, etc.) before ripping with DVD Srink 3.1.4 and doing the same before burning with Nero 5. The results are outstanding, no erros at all. Also, in order to avoid forcing the DVD drive, I am using only 90% of DVD-R disk space, trying to avoid the last part of the disk where usually errors are found. In order to fastcheck the resulting backup, I use DVDinfopro as recommended by Frank, great program and many thanks to both of you.
Also, have you used the option 32Kbps reading blocks (64Kbps standard reading blocks) in DVD Shrink?, Are better results achieved this way (32Kbps blocks).
Thanks again to all of you and great internet site.

I am burning with Shrink at 8X with a Plextor 708A drive and +R 4X Verbatim media (yes, 4X media burns at 8x in the Plextor), no problems. I really like Shrink's Re-author capabilities. DVDXcopy is not even close and Shrink is free!
I'm waiting on my DVDXcopy Platinum $30 rebate since November.

Like many others, I started with DVD X-Copy and loved it. Having to split most movies to 2 disc's was not ideal, but since I use a 5 disc changer in my home theater it was not a real problem. The upgrade to X-press solved that problem and became my favorite. The main problem with both programs is poor results when trying to copy episodic disc's(The Sopranos,Band of Brothers,Etc.) When I came across DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink, this problem was solved. Decrypter is perfect for single layer movies, and DVD Shrink works for everything. I still have X-Copy on my system, but have not used it for months. The only problems I have had have been due to bad media. Once you find a brand that your burner likes, stick with it. I use a Sony DRU-500AX with Accu 2X or 4X discs (meritline.com)

edcook,
You sound like you are writting my start into DVD Backups.
Keep playing with different programs, it's fun -
for your next step try DVD2One. It's outstanding for episodes. I love using it with DVDShrink. Shrink to rip, edit and compress, then DVD2One in the join mode to "glue" it all together -
(DVD2One can edit, etc. too - play with it :-))
Let me know how you like it-
and Welcome to the Neighborhood,
Pete
Florida,
Did you try that 321Gone yet ?
Before when you asked about the DVD XCopy warning page, I didn't know about that program, it works well with Xpress :-))

DVD video playback burned at 8x "equal" to burning at 4x or less? Nice dvd burner purchase m8 as Plex drives are simply awesome! I found in my exhaustive testing burning at lower speeds produces slightly better dvd video playback. I'm impresed with Pinnacle Instant Copy 8.0 but encoding times can be long but alslo like DVD Shrink and CloneDVD too.

I purchased X-Copy then later x-press quite a while ago, before anything else was out. Both did what they were supposed to do however three things to note.
1) if you have to buy them now, your dumb. So many free stuff out there that does the same
2) Nobody mentions about sound quality for some reason, just picture. I have a $2k home theater and care about the sound. X-copy of course sounds the same but x-press cuts the highs and the lows it seems.
3) X-Copy is annoying if you have to reinstall it, it requires on-line activation and I've had to contact them twice to reactivate it when I was switching around my HD's. If they go under, it's useless. Also most IMPORTANT
!!! ************** !!!
321's X-PRESS sends both encrypted and non-encrypted data to the company with EVERY BURN. I looked at the packets and where they were being sent to. I emailed them about it asking what it was and why part of it was encrypted. They never returned my mail. I called and they didn't answer my question either.
Now all I use is DVD-Shrink 3.0+ or if I want an exact copy for some reason on 2 discs, my purchased copy of x-copy.

What is sent to 321 is a request for any updates for the programs of theirs that you are using. You don't have to be connected to the Internet to use their programs. If you had given thought to those with laptops - it would seem logical :-))
What I did was to deny that program access to the Internet through my firewall :-)
FYI, Like you, I have no love for them after giving them my money also - I use shrink plus others and rarely Xpress.

May I suggest DVDFab, it will provide you with an EXACT copy, no warning screen and it's as easy as sin ;-D - -> as they say, "Mickey likes it!"

You can get DVD Shrink 3.1 on this site @ http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_shrink.cfm you might also want to try this method with your Xpress. This is How I use my Xpress Basic.
Programs needed DVD-X-Copy X-Press, IFOEdit, and Nero Burning Rom
How to remove the 321 Label Manually with DVD-X-Copy X-Press.
1. Open DVD-X-Copy X-Press and start your disc. When it tells you to insert blank disc.
2. Go to you temp folder (example) (D:\TEMP\DVDXPRESS\VIDEO_TS) select all files.
And copy them to anther folder like (D:\DVDINPROCESS) and then close out X-Copy you are now done with that program.
3. Open IFOEdit and open (D:\DVDINPROCESS\VIDEO_TS.IFO) and click Menu Extras. And Check All But the Last File (example) Vobld 5
The number could be different depending on the video_ts.ifo but the 321 Label is always the last file on the VIDEO_TS.IFO.
Well if you have all checked but the last one then click strip it. It will strip to the folder of your choice the all you need to do is move the 3 new files it made to the (D:\DVDINPROCESS) folder make sure you over right the existing files.
4. Now in IFOEdit open your new VIDEO_TS.IFO and click Get VTS sectors. And now you are done with IFOEdit.
5. Now open Nero and select DVD, Compile a new DVD, Other DVD formats, DVD-Video, Finish. Under File Browser find the folder with you movie in it like (D:\DVDINPROCESS) and select all and drag them to your VIDEO_TS folder. Now all you should have to do is Burn the dvd.

With regular x-copy it never sent any type of request, with x-press it did. I purchased v2.5x and it would not work when I didn't allow it to send the request, it would just shut down. I believe what it was checking for was a request for TDF files for certain DVDs which it incorrectly read with some disks. In order for them to do that, they have to send the title of the disk your 'backing up' and as any data guy knows, all data is valuable and never deleted. It's not checking for updates, I'm postive of that for many reasons.
