I know DVDShrink is free, other than that is it better than DVDXcopy for any reason?
Put another way is Xcopy better than Shrink for any reason?
Thank you.

depends on what you want.
if you only want to click one button and have the software do everything, then xcopy is better.
if you want to have some control over the process, don't mind a few extra steps, don't want the initial backup screen, want more versatility and compatibility, and $100 bucks in your pocket, then DVD Shrink is better.

I second that! free vs. $100.00 and shrink has all the options you could want

I'll also agree that DVDShrink is a very nice piece of software indeed. If you spend just a small amount of time learning to use the software via the online tutorials, using it is a breeze.
I've been using it since I got my DVDRW drive, and haven't looked back.
Yes, I've used the 321 Studios products, but I'll advise you to save your money...spend some time instead. :)

Now with dvdskrink 3.1 its way better more options and will automatically burn now as long as you have Nero 6 made a perfect copy of Pirates o.t. C.

Is dvd x copy better than shrink in quality wise cause they claim to say they have such a great quality and does x copy support more stand a lone player than shrink? Because i've seen shrink backup movies not playing on some players but thats when you use Nero but over came the problem using clone dvd to record the output files.

I totally agree . I'm fairly new to DVD burning but I found DVDShrink very easy to use. Anyway, I'm always suspicious of any software provider that doesn't allow you to download a trial version of its software. What have they got to hide? I read somewhere that DVDXCopy, like almost all similar programs, is simply a bunch of freeware programs (probably including DVDShrink) which they then tweaked a bit and now sell at an extortionate price. The fact is that you can at least try DVDShrink and it won't cost you anything. Case proven!
I don't know about Nero 6, but Nero 5.5 was included with my drive. I tried burning with that. I found it useless. I'd already got Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum so I tried using that. It was no good either. So I downloaded the trial version of RecordNow Max 4.5 and it worked perfectly. I now use it all the time.

modit,
Playing in standalones doesn't have a thing to do with what program was used to make the backup. Factors like disc quality, file types (in this case they are the same type files) and disc compatability are the issues there. Compression, pretty much controls the quality of the video and that isn't detectable by the human eye. With the new DVDShrink 3.1.2 out, you would be hard pressed to ever tell any difference.
Don't knock DVDShrink 3.1.2 until you have tried it. It's a "Good Guy", one of the fastest guns in town -
"P"
madking,
One of the reasons that Nero won't work is Easy CD Creator pretty much messes up everything. Read threads throughout this forum and you will see for yourself the troubles that Easy CD Creates (heh, heh, I like my own pun:-))
Secondly, when the correct directions are followed Nero works great for the vast majority (note: I said the majority, it doesn't work for 100%). True, there a few places where you could make a mistake, not all guides foolproof, but when you have the correct proceedure down it's pretty da*n good.
In the list of the top 3 burners you'll find - Nero, CloneDVD (yes, they have a trial you can play with) and RecordNow Max.
Ok, the recess bell just blew and you'll see everyone in the schoolyard playing (except Easy CD, it doesn't play well with others)
See ya,

There are many of us here who paid for XCopy before seeing the light of excellent freeware and only wish to save others the money we lost over a program that does nothing any better than the freeware apps.
For me, DVD Decrypter 3.1.9.0, DVD Shrink 3.1.2 and RecordNow 4.5 are a sublime combination that bring me many smiles.

Well, I must come out in defence of DVD Xcopy Platinum. OK, the price is a big issue but it did'nt cost me anything as it was a gift (AUS$ 310:00 Retail). Now, I'm not a DVD burning guru and still have heaps to learn but DVD Xcopy Platinum is the only software I have used that has had a 100% success rate over around 30 movies. I have used DVD Decrypter/DVD Shrink/ImgTool, all freebies but have had some problems and a few coasters. I point out that all of the problems and issues I had with these freebies are now resolved and they work brilliantly. I use them for re-burning movies I have backed up with Platinum, mainly to ditch the 'warning' screen and some files I do not want on the copy.
DVD Xcopy Platinum crap? Well, if a 100% success rate is any indication, then no, it's not.

H Guys, I bought my 1st burner packaged with DVD X COPY EXPRESS. I knew nothing about dvd backups. I didn't know this forum was here. X copy Express is a true 1 click backup process. If you don't want to learn how to edit or use other programs, its the way to go. It does a good job at full disc backups and a better job with movie only. At $40. I think it is worth under those conditions.
However, since finding this site and getting answers to a ton of questions, My personal thinking has changed. My 2 main programs are now DVDshrink with Nero 6 Ultra, or Clonedvd with Anydvd. With these 2 I can edit out the junk, keep the extras I want, and keep the menu active if I want to. I don't think X copy Platinum is worth the $100. when the other programs do the same job for free. Once again just my opinion. Everyone has their own. If done right, I haven't seen much difference in quality of playback across all the programs I have used. I didn't mean that DVD X Copy Platinum wasn't a good program, Just not worth $100.

not true, scuba. There are so many little vagaries that can affect standalone playback. I used to use xcopy but I had all sorts of standalone compatibility issues that went away with shrink and recordnow. Sometimes my backups wont play without menus, (and I'm not the only one to have found that) Heck, many even find differences in standalone compatibility between Nero and recordnow, arguably the most successful burning programs. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/66069
searching the forums will prove this out. while digital data is digital data is digital data, how we manage it does have an impact on ultimate standalone compatibility.

Hi All,
I never did answer the young man's main question, Sorry Sir, -
DVD XCopy and Xpress cost me $69.99. I thought it was super, when I had nothing to compare it with -> ;-(
I then found Shrink, Nero, CloneDVD and recently DVD2One -> :-)
Now, with the New 3.1.2 Shrink - well, WOW -> :-))!!
All I can say is, 321 already has my money, there are much better things for you to spend your $$$ on -
***********************************************
yuedana,
My point was based on -
Quote: while digital data is digital data is digital data
I personally haven't seen difficulties when playing the same backup burned by 2 or 3 *separate programs. It is possible that because I used the XCopy burner and only CloneDVD's fryer and Nero - I haven't been exposed to poor software -
* I actually did burn 2 and 3 copies of the exact DVD to compare quality - never saw noticeable differences -
I shouldn't have made such a general statement as how I haven't used every burning software ever made -
Lastly, I'll admit to all, I am ALWAYS in a learning mode -

Hi doc,
Try taking a look at the log files: Winexplorer, C:\program files\321 studios\express\log. You will find a record of every burn you made with Express located there. May not help ya but its kinda interesting to look at.

dcdoc,
With Xpress off, start the DVD on your PC's player, when it's running, open XCopy, shut the movie off and start the copy now - should work.
If not, stop back and either the "Fastman" Frank or lil' ole' me will be glad to set you up with a free program that will do it all in 3 clicks -
Bye the way -
Welcome to the Neighborhood -

I've tried both DVDShrink 3.1.2 and DVDDecrypter 3.1.9 both are working nicely. However I've got problem of burning the DVD files from hard drive to DVD-R using Mediostream NEO DVD Plus v.5 (it's bundled w/ DVD writer LG-GSA 4040B). It only writes the first chapter of the movies "Underworld" ???. I wonder would it cause by the CCS of the current studio movies or it is the software ???. Also the movies "Pirates of the Caribbean-The curse of the black pearl" wouldnot be ripped by DVDShrink but is is ripped OK by DVDDecrypter...
Thanks all for any help or comments.

vuvan,
My first feeling is that you may be running programs while burning - either knowingly or behind the scenes. Use msconfig and turn everything off. Have a cup of tea while Mr. PC is burning -
I'm not familiar with that movie - is it by any chance a collections of "episodes", made from a TV series ?? If so, it might have to be "joined" with a program like DVD2One.
Thought two - Change media, cheap media and fast writing speeds account for many problems. Try a top brand named media -
I don't think the studio would permit 1 chapter to be copied if it was the CCS ?
I personally didn't have any problems with "Pirates" - I ripped it with DVDShrink 3.0 Beta 5 (that might have been the difference) and it went right through - maybe something changed for the worse when they improved it - ?? Who knows ??
Pete

Thanks Pete,
1) I've just updated DVDShrink to 3.1.3 and try to rip the movies "Pirates of the Carribean" to hard drive again and it still failed (at 3% Analysing w/ error message: Failed to read file V:\. Copy Protection Error- The read failed because the sector is encrypted.). Interesting enough though DVDDerypter works nicely.
2) About the burning to DVD-R problem w/ Mediostream NEO plus software, I use Ahead's Nero v.6 and it works very nicely.
For this particular movies, DVDDerypter was used to rip it to HD, DVDShrink then was used to compress the file to fit into a DVD-R disk and finally Nero v.6 was used to write it to the DVD-R disk.

vuvan,
That's kind of the way we go - making up recipes as we go along - I just had a time with "Finding Nemo" and "The Incredible Shrinking Man" - needed different strokes for the different folks -
The Recipe that you tried, DVD Decrypter and then DVDShrink is always a good way to go if DVDShrink by itself doesn't work.
I burn with Nero 80% of the time and CloneDVD the other 20%. There are rare times that Nero 6.0.23 gives me errors and that CloneDVD will burn - Go figure, Huh ? :-))
The "Mediostream NEO DVD Plus v.5 " that you were trying - does Roxio make that ??
