Downgrading will not help you. The problem is your mod chip. If it can be updated then you need to update it. If you can't then you need to replace it with a newer chip.

If I don't have any trucha signed backups and I don't care about homebrew, is there any point of downgrading from 3.3 to 3.2?
Basically, what I'm saying is, what is the advantage of having 3.3 vs. 3.2??

In your case then, no, there is no benefits. there is no real difference between the 2 except stopping the trucha hack.

Quote: Ok. Having the homebrew channel installed will make this much easier, so consider installing that before you get going if you don't alreay have it.
First you need to run the REV3 Installer. To do this you will need a copy of a file called IOS37-64-v2070.wad which is the original wii wad file. You can download this from various places. You will have to google for it.
Once you have IOS37-64-v2070.wad you copy that file to the root of your SD card along with the installer, then insert the SD card into your wii and run the installer.
Once you have done this you can run the downgrader itself, copy the downgrader to your SD card then run it on your wii. You will need internet access while you run it.
Hope this helps.
[edit] the IOS37-64-v2070.wad file should be 1.82MB just for info.
Can we go back to this for a second...what if, I don't have the homebrew channel, nor can I get an orig copy of TP. I went to my local video rental store (my city has 1, lol), and they no longer carry Zelda...whats the luck in that. I could drive 45 min to rent a copy, or wait for gamefly to mail me one, but d*mm!t, I'm impatient.
<my story>my Wii was fine up to 1.9g, then one day I go play a backup and it wouldn't read (just for like no reason, no updates, no moving or transporting the wii, no trying nothing new). So then I tried another and another, and none worked, but my wii sports, and wii play work fine. My buddy, also has a wiikey, his wii was doing the same thing, wouldn't read backups. We burn 1.9s to a disk, he pops it in his wii, and in 5 minutes, he was good to go (he was on 3.2U i believe). I take the same disk home, pop it in my wii, nothing. I tried a few more disk (using imgburn, 4x, verbatum, kodak, maxell, and hp...all -r) and still no luck (all my backups that used to work are on verbatum-r and maxell-r).
So being an idiot, I thought maybe I'll update my Wii ( I was prob on 3.1 or 3.2U), and now I'm on 3.3U, only to read later that was a dumb thing to do. I've never had a prob before..I've had my wii a couple years now, had the chip in since I got it. So I've went from 1.9b, to 1.9g (to play SMG), and I wanted to update to 1.9s (hoping this would fix the issue of my wii not playing backups anymore). </end of my story>
so my Q is can I launch the downgrader right off an SD? I have the IOS37-64-v2070.wad, and an internet connection.
I've never tried to the TP hack, or installed the homebrew channel hell I didn't even know abt it til I started trying to figure out how to update to 1.9s if my Wii won't read any backups to be honest.
The instructions are faily vague:
[ HOW TO INSTALL IT ]:
- Copy "IOS37-64-v2070.wad" file to the root of a SD card.
- Insert the SD card on your Wii.
- Run the installer.
Sorry so long, didn't want to leave out any details. ggbarnum, I've read alot of crap on the internet about this, this is by far the best solution I've found...thanks for your post (and the links).

Ok, well to be honest I don't think downgrading is going to solve your problem as it started before you upgraded to 3.3
3.3 only stops trucha signed disks from working, thats all, and I don't think this is your problem.
However if you wanted to try, in answer to your questions. You don't need an original copy of TP, a backup will do. And if your wii is chipped you don't need TP at all as the homebrew channel is installable via DVD. You just need to download the iso file for your region and burn it to disk then run it on your wii. Though given your current problem with reading disks, you might not be able to run it.
Have you tried running the wiikey recovery disk ? I don't have a wiikey myself but I'm sure someone can help you out with running the recovery.

That is why I was going to rent TP (cause my Wii will still read legit games). Then I could use the TP hack to install Homebrew channel (since my Wii prob won't read the ISO if I burn it) <vent>cause my Wii is being a real POS RIGHT NOW! UGHH. </vent>
Anyway...i appreciate the quick response. I continued searchin the net for ways to fix the prob, and came across a really heated thread bashing waninkoko's firmware. Anyway that link led me to this post by marcan, which has pretty much changed my mind about tryin the downgrade.
So I will try the recovery disk (although my wii won't read a DVD) as a last ditch effort. I guess if this doesn't work, I should look into a new mod chip? Not the end of the world I guess. Can an old mod chip be replaced with a new one? I didn't mod my wii, my buddy knows a guy that mods all our stuff.
I'll try it and post back for anyone else having the same prob, thanks again gg.

Using this with the Homebrew channel:
Make 2 folders inside the apps folder on your sd card.
Name 1 Custom Rev and the other Downgrader.
Place the cios37_rev3-installer.dol in the Custom rev folder and rename it boot.dol
Place the cIOS_Downgrader_v1.1.dol file in the downgrader folder and rename it boot.dol
Now copy the icon and meta file from another homebrew app folder, and paste them in each new folder you made.
Edit both meta files so that the one in downloader says "Wii downloader" and the one in custom rev says "Custom Rev RUNFIRST"
Now google:
IOS37-64-v2070.wad
And pick the first one.
Lrn2tornt.
Place the file into the ROOT of your sdcard (not in a folder).
Now put the sd card back into your wii, and run the homebrew channel.
Run the one that says Custom Rev run first.
When that's done, run the Downgrader, and pick your firmware version (probably 3.2 and whatever region your wii is).
U = USA
E = Europe
J = Japan

guys I say that again...please at least, read the thread by marcan before you use the downgrade firmware.
ggbarnum, many thanks ... i downloaded the 1.9b recovery from here and used this tutorial. It didn't work the first time (but I think I didn't do the steps exactly as he says to), and on the second attempt, it worked fine. Now, my Wii was reading backups again, and so I was able to use the 1.9s update found here. Now I'm on 3.3U (wii), 1.9s (wiikey), and all functionality is back to normal!!!

It's supposed to prompt you before wii restart I believe.
After you actually downgrade (with the downgrader), it prompts you to 'continue' again even though you just downgraded. So watch out for that.

Thanks for all the info above. Using that I have installed the Homebrew channel and downgraded successfully to 3.2e. My Wii works as normal with the games that worked before... but the one that didn't (SSBB single layer version) is now asking me to update my Wii. If I accept the update (assuming it is safe to do) will it go back to 3.3e or is the downgrade 'permanent' until I change the version using the downgrader again?

Does this damn IOS37-64-v2070.wad work on the Japanese Wii...I am forced to update to 3.3J which I do not reeally want to. If not updated, the wifi won't connect as well as other weather or forecast channels.

Is that so?
Can anyone verify that you cannot connect to weather and news channels if you don't update?
Or is this just the Japanese firmware?
Once I downgraded to 3.2u (from 3.3u obviously) everything works just fine (all channels).

I reformat the damn wii and hence I am being forced to update to 3.3J right now. Otherwise, I won't be able to connect to the weather and forecast channels. When you try to get into it, you are directed to the connect 24, which is annoying.

well...How does it mess up your channels after you downgrade to the older firmware? What will it look like? I really don't wanna ruin my wii just by downgrading it.

Install the Homebrew channel and run the error game with the Gecko Region free loader. That'll work for all the games give the error except maybe Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Since it's dual layer game a really old chip probably won't be able to load it even with the Gecko loader.
