If you have a new psp that had 4.01 or higher firmware right out of the box chances are you have the TA-088vs mobo.
There is a utility you can run to see if that's the case - link
As updates become available this thread will be updated.
1.20.09 edit: Sony's new firmware 5.03 blocks the GripShift exploit so PSP3000 owners for now do not update the firmware - link
So basically all phat's can be modded? Even the ones with the TA-0xx Motherboard that previoulsy couldn't be modded. Sorry I don't remember the number of phat mobo that at one time could not be modded.

hey guys. completely new to all of this so any help would be greatly appreciated. i've been reading for a couple hours, prepping myself to play Crisis Core, Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops, and Dragonball Z Another Road on a PSP I plan to buy tomorrow. But now I realise, new PSP's may not fit the bill for downloaded games
So I ask you, experts, help me out. Will this PSP do what I want it to do?

@achooo
See the link in the first post to try and identify the mobo - the mobo came in some 2000's.
@Zera
Custom firmware isn't country dependent - it's universal. Right now you're stuck - can't mod it.

Ok to help some of the newbies (hate that term but it is what it is) to determine if they can modify their PSP with CFW, I think a visual aide can help (to a certain degree) since it is a repeated question I see over and over again and not to sound mean or anything but some people really need to read but I hope this "guide" can help or visually guide someone with CFW and PSP choices:
These are the versions that can be modified -
PSP 1000 (aka Phat PSP)

PSP 2000 Piano Black (with some exceptions, if I remember corrrectly it would of been for models shipped prior to January 2007)

Silver 2000 PSP (read above for Piano Black PSP)

God of War Special Edition PSP (very rare to find new)

Star wars Battlefront Special Edition PSP (same as GOW SP Edition, rare nowadays to find new)

Madden Special Edition (this one is a mixed bag, different people report one thing or another, that its modifiable and that its not. Personally the blue color sucks but that's my opinion)

PSPs that cannot be modified with CFW at this time(except for the Gripshift exploit) are any PSP 3000 including the Ratchet and Clank version:

Hope this helps

Well, currently no they are not modifiable except through the Gripshift exploit. If you really want a PSP you can use CFW on, you can A. wait til someone figures out how to fully hack a PSP 3000 or B. look online at different retailers or private sales of any PSP I mentioned above that does work. I would play it save and either buy a PSP 1000, a GOW PSP or a Star Wars Battlefront PSP since those are confirmed to be hackable. I would not go with the PSP 2000 Piano black or Silver only because you don't know which version you will get. Just Google around til you find one
