Right now there are 2 types of slim psp's that can not be modded - the PSP3000 and the ones with the TA-088v3 motherboard.
If you have a new psp that had 4.01 or higher firmware right out of the box chances are you have the TA-088vs mobo.
There is a utility you can run to see if that's the case - link
As updates become available this thread will be updated.
1.20.09 edit: Sony's new firmware 5.03 blocks the GripShift exploit so PSP3000 owners for now do not update the firmware - link
Update 05/2009
Thanks to ShaggyZE
chickenhen has been confirmed to work with ta-088v3 slims and now has a custom firmware loader to allow for iso's and other cfw features but not complete and has to be loaded each time after reboot but only installed once though psp 3000's do not have the custom firmware support yet.

Update 06/2009
Thanks once again to ShaggyZE
All psp's can be modded to some extent now - see this post:

Hello,
Just a quick question - I am pretty sure I have one of the aforementioned PSPs - I just bought it in the UK, it is a slim version 2003, it came with 4.01 on it, and a 'G' barcode.
Due to my lack of expertise (I know very little about PSPs), I was just going to pay someone back home (New Zealand) to do it. I emailed the 'company' and they told me they can mod a PSP regardless of version, mobo etc, except for the 3000 series.
Is he bulling me? Or am I missing something?
Thank you for any assistence!

Yes he is probably pulling your leg - yours totally fits the description of the TA-088 vs3.
Try running the identifier in the thread linked to above.

I dont think i can add anything at this moment. Maybe that "The Ones" that you mentioned binkie can be some of the psp-2000 series. And sony has started shipping PSP-2000 series with the TA-088v3 motherboard.
And that one exploit puts the modders one step closer to a completely moddable PSP with the TA-088v3 motherboard.

For God of War - I think that one is fine. A couple of my friends got them recently - they came w/ 3.95 and weren't the 3000 model.
Star Wars I'm not to sure.

When i went to buy my psp people were recommending the star wars psp cause they have one and its modded.
im pretty sure they were one of the first slims to come out. I know for sure they came out whenever Star Wars Renegade squadron came out and my umd has sony update version 3.51 so i think youll be safe there.

Check out the link too spitfire6 from the first post in the thread - you can also check the barcode to see if it's one of the 'dreaded' psps.

If I got the question right - it could be because some of the special editions were manufactured before the new motherboard came out would be my guess.
There are some special editions like the Madden one I think that some come w/ the new motherboard.

No psp bought from the store comes with custom firmware. You have to mod it to get cfw.
Now maybe if you buy one from a private seller it might.

@binkie7
i know some of the madden ones are moddable. my bro-in-law has one. with those i think some can be modded others cant. it depends when the psp was manufactured. and the madden ones were coming out when sony released the new motherboard so some are still moddable.

Thanks for the clarification Gr3m. If you wanted to buy a new psp now it might be maddening :) to figure out which ones can be modded.
@Puppet198
Hopefully the cfw will right behind it.
