I've been using Norton Internet Security 2009 it slows somewhat but not much, unlike previous versions from Norton. It's not free.
I think I put AVG on my daughter's pc. It's working fine and it's free. I will ask her when I see her tonight if CRS syndrome doesn't set in. LOCOENG had recommended it. You got to have something. I'm not saying you do have a virus or trojan or something but you still need the protection. Paid or Free.

Thanks ZoSoIV,
I still don't think this is virus related because I had the problem right after formatting and before I went online. Unless the virus is embeded in one of my favourits entries.
How much will an anti-virus program slow my dial-up access system down?

You have been asked twice to try ImgBurn.
Install the program.
Put a blank in the drive.
Open ImgBurn.
Copy the log file and paste it here.

programs like Trend Micro or avg are less intrusive than Norton (can be a system hog) and won't slow down you're system. I'm pretty sure Trend Micro has a free trial if you want to try it.

Norton's NIS surprisingly is not slowing down my pc-hardly noticeable. Noticed it when got my new pc year ago. As I was already using NIS for several years and this came with free 15mos full program, I was familiar with it. Then unexpectedly they installed the newest version and it is not even noticed. It also monitors the pages you open to tell you site is safe and allows you to set up a password protected for going to sites.(I have not set that up)Have no complaints and will renew for $49/yr in another 3 months. O.K. dialysis1, I've downloaded the program, put in a blank disc, opened imgburn and copied the log, but I'm not sure if I did this part right.

I 20:02:02 ImgBurn Version 2.4.4.0 started!
I 20:02:02 Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600 : Service Pack 3)
I 20:02:02 Total Physical Memory: 1,046,512 KB - Available: 529,676 KB
I 20:02:02 Initialising SPTI...
I 20:02:02 Searching for SCSI / ATAPI devices...
I 20:02:02 Found 1 CD-RW, 1 DVD±RW and 1 DVD±RW/RAM!
And if no drives were detected, it would say so.

O.K. I went to imgburn, then tools, then filter driver load order:
Upper Device Filter redbook
Upper class filter [Not found]
device CD/DVDrom device
Lower class filter iviaspi
Lower class filter PxHelp20
Lower device filter imapi
I couldn't cut and paste these so I just re-typed the information.

Yes they do. Liteon LH-20A1 - 02 is the right nomenclature.

I have no idea how to go about doing such a thing. This stuff is way beyond me. Keep in mind, when I was in high school, calculators were just starting to come on the market.
