I am using DVD43 and DVDshrink32 and I?ve had no trouble making backup copies of my movies. But a few months ago my computer would no longer acknowledge when I put a blank DVD in the drive. At first I thought it was a bad batch of DVDs, so I bought another brand ? no change. I put the DVD in and after about 30 seconds there?s a swoosh-swoosh sound, then a pause and this cycle repeats over and over until I eject the DVD. Nothing appears on the screen.
I have formatted my hard-drive and then the blank DVDs work fine. I start loading my programs and after each one I try the blank DVD ? no problems. But when I install DVDshrink32 the computer no longer acknowledges the DVD. If it?s a DVD with information on it, then it works, but not the blank ones.
I?ve tried uninstalling Nero, re-booting and re-installing but no change.
This is really frustrating and I would like to know how to fix it.

I uninstalled DVD43 and DVDshrink32, put in a blank DVD but it still won't acknowledge it. I know that it works after I format the hard drive so what's different? I am losing hope so if anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them!

Thanks again ZosoIV,
Please keep in mind that I'm almost 50 and my understanding of computer technology is limited, even though I use a computer all day at work.
Where do I find the 'divice manager' and if I re-start the computer how can I be sure that the operating system will re-install the optical drive?
Sorry about my ignorance in these matters. I really would like to learn about this stuff, but where i live there's not much access to education. And the people who do know these thing are all charging huge bucks to do the work.

Hi again,
I tried those instructions but my system must be different. I'm using a Lenovo 3000J and running WindowsXP Pro.
When I go to My Computer, Properties and Advanced I see 3 choices, Performance, User Profiles and Star-up & Recovery - not Device0 and Device1
Would it be O.K. with you if we used email to communicate?

O.K. I have gone into Device Manager and found the icon for CD/DVD drives. Is it simply a matter of uninstalling this drive, re-starting the computer and letting Windows re-install it? I will also do a disc clean-up and defrag as you suggested.
How do I 'PM' you?

I will try that when I have some free time. I have saved all this to a Word file.
I noticed from your desktop you use DVDclone - would you recommend that for making back-up copies of movies? I used it once and it seemed to work pretty good, but then it expired. I did have good luck with DVDshrink and hope to again once I resove this.
I sent you a test email to hotmail but I don't know if you got it.
Thanks again.

CDs are no problem, and DVDs with information on them work too, but when I put a blank DVD in I get nothing on the screen, and I hear that double swish-swish sound every 5 seconds or so until I eject the DVD. I haven't tried all the suggestions above, but I'll keep you posted.

What do you want to see when you put in a blank DVD?
In Windows XP, you cant 'read' a blank DVD. XP does not
have a built in DVD program. Has to rely on external
programs.

Try deleting the upper and lower filters. Also, are you getting an error message by chance?

Thanks to all who replied to my post!
I finally got around to doing what ZoSoIV advised me to do (above), but sadly the same problem is still persisting!
I uninstalled DVDshrink, and DVD43, then I uninstalled the optical drives and the IDE controlers. I ran CCleaner and re-booted the computer. the only thing I didn't do is a de-frag the main drive.
I know my CD drive will recognize my blank DVDs after I format the hard drive, so why can't I get it to do it now? After I format the hard drive I put a blank DVD in the drive and a screen pops up asking me what I would like to do and shows a bunch of suggestions. This no longer happens after I have re-installed my programs. If I put a bank DVD in the drive and then double-click on the external drive icon to open it, my computer will just stall until I eject the disc, and only then will the the blank CD drive screen open. I should mention that a DVD with information on it works fine.
Next I think I'll format the hard drive again but instead of installing DVD43 I'll try DVDfab. Maybe that will work.

If with mysticE on this one.Your problem appears to be caused by DVD Shrink if we believe the above statement and I do. Are you installing the same program (shrink) as the one that was not working or are you downloading another version of Shrink. Your Shrink program may have become corrupted. Did you try his download?? Try his or this one.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Tool...VD-Shrink.shtml
If you do a reformat, don't install Shrink at all and I see you have Nero. If you have Nero Express try and copy a copied disc that you know plays well. You can also use ImgBurn to copy the copy also free and you should have it anyway from ImgBurn.com
DO NOT REINSTALL DVD43! Use free DVDFab or free 21 day trial of AnyDVD from Slysoft.com

So this whole time you have been referring to an external burner?

guys I don't know if you can, but I can't open either internal or external burners(3) with a blank disc in the drive by clicking on the drive. Shrink will also not open a blank disc when you try to rip one with shrink. What say y'all?

You cannot open a blank DVD in XP. Plain and simple. There is nothing to open or to read on a blank DVD. XP does not do DVD's
natively. You need a external program such as Nero.
