Bloonight
I've been trying to stay out of this, but your continued effort to throw in all sorts of disconnected, fragmented, and unrelated bits of information, has irritated me. If you expect us to believe that you know what you're talking about, forget it. Who knows how many sites you've extracted these torn bits of information from?
I see as always you've added your own special flavor to the mix by actually editing out portions of it. But you've edited it to where it is nothing more than a clumsy verbose collage. A badly constructed work, carelessley extracted from what was once no doubt, a collection of informitive and well written articles.

What brand/format disk are you purchasing for $75/100 with 96% success rate?
Most of us here are paying $69/100 for Ridata G04 with 100% success rate.
Let it go bloonight.

Shall we remind him that quality media also has a longer shelf life than does cheap media?
Will he know why his disks are beginning to fail in a year or so?

Quote: first the one re the person getting 100% burns compared to my 96% and my garbage count.....don't forget I am paying just 75 cents per disk
I paid $60 for 100 Riteks. Don't you look like an idiot.
Quote: so my lost on a 100 spindle stack is only $3 which is what you pay for one disk
My loss was $0.
Quote: so if I multiply your disk costs by the same count I have you will be spending $300 for 100 disks
You must work as an accountant for the government. $60 for the Riteks, remember?
Quote: while I spend $75 which shows me saving $225 which I can assure you is more than just a few pennies in savings
Actually you spent $15 more than me on the discs alone then when you add the $3 in lost discs you're in the hole for $18. Idiot.
Quote: perhaps you can buy a calculator with all the money you are saving and check you figures before you write replies.
Perhaps you can pull your head out of your ass and replace the fecal matter with an actual brain before you write replies.
So after your sci-fi excuses for using crap media didn't pan out you came up with ridiculous monetary claims to justify crap media. Didn't work too well now did it?

Quote: By the way, you won't have any problems with rewritable DVD's cause they are very high quality for rewriting so they work great all the time if you can get them on sale
So you are suggesting that every single DVD±RWs are perfect and with the exception of those really really funky errors I will be able to get perfect quality every time? If I may remind you, DVD technology is still somewhat immature -- and certainly not perfected like say, CD-RWs -- the theoretical quality of the media and reputation of the maker/manufacturer is one thing; realworld burning is a whole new ballgame :)
Quote: I found out that no matter which burner you are using you need to rip and burn with the same device. Using a seperate DVD player to rip and then burning with another device is just asking for problems as the firmware may not be exactly compatible and you get data drop out errors from player to burner.
How exactly did you find this out? Consider this: Billy Bob rips a dvd using a Pioneer drive and stores it as an ISO .... oh wait.... I-S-O ... international standards organization .... but wait .... ISO for a Pioneer drive isnt the same as ISO for a Liteon? There's a reason ISO was made and in case you didnt know, it was to avoid incompatibility issues you have alluded to.
Quote: So rip with the same device and burn with the same device, same firmware for both jobs.
Consider the application "SmartRipper" or "DVDDecryptor" ... for argument's sake, suppose there are five different types of DVDROMs and five different types of DVD±R drives. Now with a generously (low) five firmware revisions each we are dealing with 50 ways to rip a DVD and 25 to burn it. Now you would be wise to note that SmartRIpper/DVDecryptor doesnt come with a menu that says "Please select your drive/firmware from this list so we can make the appropriate rip" -- there's a reason for that -- it's because a rip is a rip is a rip. Now you and I both know there are way more than five DVDROMs and five DVD±Rs and way more than five firmwares -- and you dont see burning applications and ripping applications releasing updates weekly to keep up with the firmwares! Oh and... what's this data drop error business?
Quote: Next, try and us media that has very little writing or paint on top as this can cause the laser to flare when it is burning hence the second suggestion to take off the sides of your computer to let it get as cool as possible.
Damn you might be on to something! You should send an emergency email to Plextor or something to let them know of this extremely serious safety concern! And while you're at it, send emails to Sony, Verbatim, Maxell etc to warn them of this ever so serious hazard which their engineers and designers have obviously overlooked.
Quote: take off the sides of your computer to let it get as cool as possible.
While you may be an expert in the realm of DVD media and burning, leave the cooling suggestions alone -- you're better off keeping the case closed and venting the air -- opening the case doesnt do much considering how 90+% of the drives are arranged.
Quote: Even low level lasers generate heat and the paint on top can gather the heat in spots and cause burnouts.
Damn forget peashooters and potato guns! I should dismantle my DVDburner ... or did you mean DVDROM and use the laser to torch my roomates? Did you perhaps consider that the majority of the heat is generated by kinetic means? (i.e., spinning of the drives)
Quote: Try to use clear tops or disks with very little paint and writing on them.
Damn Sony, Verbatim and Maxell are in for a shocker .... damn they gonna get sued for poor quality control and them engineers are gonna get fired for not realizing that the "paint" was highly flammable.
Quote: This rule does not apply to expensive media like Verbatim etc but I cannot afford them at the rate I use them.
So if the media is expensive .... then there's no way it can burn .... sweet! I bet media manufacturers would love to hear that.
Quote: You have to make sure the source DVD is spotless and as scratch free as possible.
Spotless and scratchfree to the naked eye is one thing ... spotless and scratchfree to a 500nm laser is another thing altogether
Quote: I usually rent a movie just as it is coming out to avoid that and I always check the disk before I leave the store.
Let's keep an eye on the piracy talk shall we? Have a look at the rules again if you need a reminder.
Quote: Next.....forget about labelling your back ups. I know it looks cool and professional but trust me...it creates heat dams when you play them and the backups start skipping and freezing and once they start that they don't stop and are coasters.
So what exactly is this "heat dam" .. these ultra high temp lasers, while passing over the pits of a DVD get "stuck" on a particularly huge pit or something and the laser gets stuck there burning a hole in the disc or something? Damn that sounds dangerous. But all humor aside, you said that you rent movies from the store as soon as possible to avoid scratches etc -- those movies have labels on them!!! OMFG!!! Its gonna buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurn! So these fancy companies make discs that end up being coasters .... dont you think movie rental stores would have said something about that now?
Quote: Just use a very thin permanent marker to put the name on and decorate the case instead.
Ok if its so dangerous why put anything on it at all.. like I mean if the fancy manufactuters with their multimillion dollar facilities cant get labels to be safe ... who am I to try and label my disc?
Quote: One more little tip to help.....use DVD Shrink and re-author and drop all the crap(subtitles, menus, previews etc.) out to avoid compressing too much. It's the movie you after in any case isn't it?
And if i'm interested in making a 1:1 backup? Oh and on the topic of Copyright law -- you are not allowed to alter, mutilate or otherwise modify the original (see Section28 of the law)
Quote: Also, if the movie is really long split it into two disks using DVD Shrink so the movie is not compressed at all
Any ideas on how to preserve the menu structure? (or will shrink do it also?)
Quote: I know it can be a pain having to change a movie half way through but it's worth it to get a perfect working copy of a movie for your collection
Well most movies come with labels on them which can cause serious lens flares and heat dams during ripping so I guess it's as a perfect backup as possible.....
Quote: I hope this helps and urge you to give it a try as I and about 10 people I know are burning this way and no complaints(except for scratched source disks) from anyone
Well if I didnt know that lens flaring and heat dams were so dangerous and prevalent I might have done that too!
Quote: This would qualify as something called "pure fantasy". How exactly does a laser "flare"?
Easy Nephilim, because the reverse quantum matrix limiters can be overloaded when the primary ion core for the drive is breached.... in that case all power is rerouted to to drive integrity and to contain a potential core breach... thus the laser accuators and suppressors are temprarily taken offline in the overall best interest of the drive
Quote: one guy who worked for Fuji and explained the problem with burning DVD media, any kind of DVD media.
Damn maybe the media manufacturers should get into touch with this fellow... their entire market line is at stake here.
Quote: The disk works great when we first burn it but after a label is put on and a few runs on the stand alone makes data transference impossible and then the forums are filled with people asking question about why their disks worked great for a few times and then start freezing and skipping.
Very true however this can often be alleviated by burning slower.
Quote: Add to this the comments regarding firmware please...the firmware is critical to transference of data and since different companies use different lines of coding in their firmware it can cause problems if it doesn't match
Ok so you are suggesting that if I'm running a firmware 1.30 I might not be able to rip a good a copy as with version 1.35?
Quote: like there is not standard for anything else in the computer world.
Ok so you've never heard of Red-book, White-book, WiFi, ISO, FTP or SSH?
Quote: Get the point and some software will actually compensate for data drop outs to complete the job so even though the burn completes successfully the software may actually have passed over the data drop outs to show a successful operation
Very true however utterly irrelevant to DVDVideo backups. What you are talking about is in reference to something like SafeDisc2/.3 protection found on games -- the errors are intentional -- and to make a proper 1:1 backup, those errors should be preserved -- meaning it will ignore those errors and carry on as if nothing had happened.... DataDVD protection is a completely different animal.
Quote: Please accept my intrusion into the piracy issue. I keep forgetting because in Canada it is not illegal to download music or make backups of movies
Well because you live in Canada doesnt mean shit. When you signed up at Afterdawn you agreed to a set of rules. Period. (for the record, I too live in Canada).
Quote: My success rate is 100% so just maybe................good media is worth it!
Dont lie Nephilim....those laser flares and heat dams (whatever they are) affect everyone the same :P
Quote: first the one re the person getting 100% burns compared to my 96% and my garbage count.....don't forget I am paying just 75 cents per disk so my lost on a 100 spindle stack is only $3 which is what you pay for one disk so if I multiply your disk costs by the same count I have you will be spending $300 for 100 disks while I spend $75 which shows me saving $225 which I can assure you is more than just a few pennies in savings....perhaps you can buy a calculator with all the money you are saving and check you figures before you write replies.
Good point but how do you know which discs are failed? You'll have to test all of them after burning (as well as after a couple weeks each because as you so aptly put it, they can potentially become coasters after time). While the rest of us may be rich as hell or what not -- we dont have the luxury of time to test, test and retest media -- especially when the option with 100% success is available.
Quote: howstuffworks.com gets their text content from the manufacturers so whose plagerizing who here
Great so do you want to take point on IP Infringement?
Quote: When people install programs, 9 times out of 10 they forget to re-boot their computer and this cause many programs to run incorrectly and to create errors where none should exist.
When most people are burning DVDs they arent installing programs and if they do install programs during their burning sessions I will make sure to remind them to restart their machine immediately as burning the DVD isnt that important.
Quote: Some software will fill in data dropout errors so as to complete a process simply by ignoring errors it reads because a re-boot wasn't done
Again... confusing DataDVD protection with DVDVideo :)
Quote: Sorry to have credited you with some intelligence instead of none at all.
Apology accepted. Unfortunately the reverse is not true: I dont regret taking eccentricity for foolishness.
Quote: Also,if snyone is using stand alone DVD players made in America you are going to run into a lot of problems simply because the firmware is placed on the chip after assembly and before it is sold.
Arent most of these standalones Made in China? So let me get this right the firmware on the DVD player is picky too? So that would suggest that there is not a single DVDVideo standard? Damn! What are these movie studios pumping out??! Nonstandard dvds -- those bastards!
Quote: This is in keeping with the strict guidelines the Taliban has placed on recorder and copying equipment sold in the States.
I thought you lived in Canada.... so would that mean if you went to the US and bought a DVD player and brought it back to Canada it might not work because the Taliban said so? Or if you were American and bought a DVD player in canada and brought it to the states and it work? Damn if that were the case, the Canadian government should formally thank the Taliban for opening up such an economic opportunity.
Quote: Besides the copyright laws up here read.....you cannot copy and sell or distribute the copy.....backing up is fine for personal use
Actually you should have a look at the Copyright law again it reads something like this:
(a) make a single reproduction of the copy by adapting, modifying or converting the computer program or translating it into another computer language if the person proves that the reproduced copy is
(i) essential for the compatibility of the computer program with a particular computer,
(ii) solely for the person's own use, and
(iii) destroyed immediately after the person ceases to be the owner of the copy; or
(b) make a single reproduction for backup purposes of the copy or of a reproduced copy referred to in paragraph (a) if the person proves that the reproduction for backup purposes is destroyed immediately when the person ceases to be the owner of the copy of the computer program.
Essentially meaning you need to be the initial owner to start with -- not renting from a store.
Quote: plus the library systems in Canada lend DVD's to people who belong to the library.
Again, from the Canadian copyright article you should check out Section 30 for a crapload of limitations and stipulations.
Quote: The whole discussion on quality and performance is moot once you get the right combo of equipment
Ok so if we have an "ideal burner/reader" you can make an copy of anything ... so what exactly are these magical drives we should all be using?
Quote: I just hate seeing people wandering in the dark with all the different advice they are getting when they first start.
And I hate seeing those same lost people being led by those carying unlit candles.
Quote: Are you serious? Do you know who the taliban is?

I can't believe that nobody has asked what speed you are burning. Unless you want to spend $2.00 per disk, burning at 8x is going to result in a bunch of bad copys no matter what burner or program you are using. If you are burning at 8x, do you feel the heat of the disk when you remove it from the drive ? Slow the burn down to 4x and you will get perfect burns even with crap CMC manufactured blanks.

8x burning is not a problem with me either.
I use 4x Ritek $69/100 and they spin(burn) at 8x on my 451s flashed to 851s.
Great results too I might add.
But if you use crappy media, dont expect the same quality in a year or so that you have now when viewing.
Sorry about your inability to burn at 8x, dano28 (Newbie), but stay tuned, theres a lot of valuable info in the forum.

I feel no more heat on a disk at 8x, 4x or 2x, although there is a laser in there.

After using different -R media for my liteon 811s with the latest firmware, i bought some Infiniti (sony g04 dye) 4x discs. first Pack of 25 worked ok, which i couldnt believe......second pack and first 2 discs are coasters......ive had a look at the discs and noticed that at the centre of the disc, theres the purple ring, which the laser probably uses to optimise itself for burning??... all the centre rings are at least 2mm, whilst on the first pack they were at least 4mm rings.........after looking at normal non g04 discs, they have a good ring to read off.......same applys to some +R g04s ive had, the centre ring is about 2mm........on a non g04 +R they have a good centre ring.....
Maybe this is where the liteon drive is going wrong.....its probably not reading the exact centre ring of the blank disc, so it is only able to read the full purple colour of the disc, which then leads to a coaster................Ive had many coasters of late due to this drive.......i only bought it to replace a hardly used 6month old Mitsumi 4x+Rw drive.
Thats my theory.....The Liteon cant read the exact centre of the discs, ie the 2mm-purple ring.
Im wondering whether to get the new dual layer model as i am selling the 811s this week......i only liked the liteon so i could disable region etc.
Has anyone used the new dual layer model with ritek g04/g05 s.

I have a PLextor PX-712A and I've been using the 4X Ridata (Ricoh) and I've been burning them flawlessly at 8X. I even did a PI/PO test on several and I've had 9 PI errors and no PO errors. You will always get a few PI errors no matter what speed you're burning at but it's the PO errors that hurt and if I'm not getting them then I'm burning at 8X. Cost $.60 each.

Check out some of our threads, Sony isn't on our list of the top 10 best :(
Don't toss them, they are excellent for your MP3 music, picture archives, spread sheets, data, text backups and archives, they just don't work well for DVD backups ! :-(
As Sophocles pointed out, Ridata is great, 90% of what I use is +R Ridata, the other 10% is "branded" Verbatim. Also, in the hit parade, if you look past the Judge's stand, you'll see Ritek G04's and, a great new disc, Verbatim's "Advanced Metal AZO," a fine X8 disc you can trust to keep your DVD's etc, safe for a good long time :D)
Remember, it's not just a compatibility thing anymore, it's also a memory thing -
