brian,brobear,sophocles, hey guys!
Depresses the hell outta me too! I will say after using sophocles suggestion and only use it on newer movies the problem seems to have calmed down somewhat.
It IS a shame to pay that much and have this crap pop up, not often, but enuff to bug the hell outta me!
Especially when the rest looks soooooo good.
I have written them also, no word yet, may have to get sophocles to be my ambassador.
GO VOLS !

Addition to original post :-
The problem does seem to mainly appear on older movies, although I have had the same symptoms on "Lost In Translation"
End of addition
If you are refering to the "vobtrans.dll" switch, you may be interested in the following. I may be incorrect here BUT this DLL is a critical part of Intervideo dvd copy. It is, I believe, the main transcoder of the app. By switching to an older, and some would say, more stable version, you are in effect sacrificing quality for functionality.

Hey brian, didn't like the switch, went back to what I had. I am using the new version. I don't seem to get the pixelation with newer movies.
BTW, I'm calling them Monday, since they won't answer emails.

So much for the DVD Shrink compartive tests. I just tried out a backup system by Cyberlink called PowerDVD copy. It's funtionality is very DVD Shrink like. It comes with a 30 day trial period.

Soph
Any early opinions on the software?. I read about it a short while ago, but no demo was available. I think I will give it a try.
By the way I have also tried the new DVD2One v1.5. The new "quality" settings seem to rely more on luck than judgement. The results I have had are very dissapointing indeed.

I had heard of that soph, I thought it wasn't out yet to demo, will have to check it out, however if it is too much "shrink like", why buy?
Brian, hmmmmmm, I was just thinking how much better DVD2One was than the 1.4 version. lol subjective as hell, ain't it?

It has a full 30 days of use. It takes about 50 minutes to do a backup, it begins with an analysis. I was wondering if Shrink worked on this one or if they were paying close attention to shrink while they were writing this app.

Hey Sophocles, BigO and all,
More of the apps should pay a little more attention to what Shrink does. Shrink is more forgiving and with higher compression and slight pixelation still gives a decent video. Copy2 and some of the others would disintegrate in a like situation. The beta of course. The current 3.1 doesn't do as well.
Guess I'll have to try out the CopytoDVD just to see what the talk is about.

That older version of Copy2 had the big block white pixels. The improvement they made that I noticed was making smaller pixels. When they did show they were in color and smaller, still larger than most programs. When any flaws show up, Copy2 falls down faster than most apps. I like it for the new movies, but I won't attempt to use it with an older or scratched disc.

Ive never really suffered from this "colour" pixellation problem. I would be very interested in any screen shots so I can compare, if at all possible. My symptoms are very similar to Sophocles's. I am sure he could send you his screen shots for you to study, if required. Be warned though, they are awful viewing.

brian, all mine have been white and very fleeting, just enough to bug me.
For anyone interested, Mr. Shrink has added to Shrink the selection of DVD-9 target size in the latest update from .6 to .7. and using Nero to burn with version 6.3.1.4 or later.

Just burnt my 1st dual layer.
Hats off once again Mr. Shrink, just burnt dual layer disc using new shrink 3.2, version .7 after pdavit's suggestion using DVD9 settings.
Went off without a hitch, used verbatim advanced AZO 8.5, burned in Nero 6.3.1.7 at 2.4x, total time-1:12.
Have tried it in 3 different standalones and played in all with no problem,
congrats.

Well done Bigo !!
I have not been following pdavit's thread.
Was the actual "layer change" position "cloned" or did you have to manually choose that point? Id be very interested in your answer. Many thanks in advance.
ps Im in top form this morning, had a job interview saturday & had confirmation today that they want me..yipeee I say.

hey brian, does that mean ya gotta go to work? lol
I enabled "remove layer break" in shrink because Nero will insert a new layer break back in the correct position (which may not be in the same place as the original disc). I set size in edit>preferences at 8124gb.
I have heard that there may be a very slight hitch at the change, but I haven't watched it all the way through yet, though I did jump all over including extras and it seemed very fine. Will know later today if a hitch occurs or not..
Nothing to do in Nero, same as always on that end. I was worried that I might have had to change size with custom sizing, but no probs, just leave it be. When the damn media costs 15.00, the term "coaster" takes on a whole new meaning. lol
Congrats on the interview.

yeah, your're right, this means I gotta go to work. It is totally against my principles, but i'm left with little choice.
Thanks for the "heads up" on the D/L burning. If you can let me know how the layer transition turns out, i'd be very interested.
I can see myself, in the near future, using D/L media to put 2 movies on a disk or in some cases 3!!. I bet you had your fingers crossed during the burn process, I'm not sure if I would be able to handle that pressure mate.
Do you ever sleep over there in the states?

I believe you have fallen into a den of insomniacs. Good luck with the job.
Forgot to note, the colored pixelation was due to a disc problem. Didn't save the rip with the problem. Resurfaced the disc and did another. I am aware of the type problem Sophocles is dealing with, though I haven't experienced it to that extreme. That appears more like the program doing a poor job of handling the input. That's been a problem all along. With more use, people are becoming more aware of the failings of the program.

Yes, I admit, i was on AD at 4.30am this morning. Sad, but true.
thanks for the good luck messages. PS between you and me, the job should be a doddle. Designing Stainless Steel Kitchen equipment & programming CNC controlled manufacturing machines. A slight departure, but far less stressful.

This thread has become a chatroom, so much for those Beta test reports. I'm not complaining because I looked back and I may have started it. Intervideo has just tow more days to respond to email.

Thought I'd update anyone who read my post a few days ago about Shrink giving different output with No Compression than with Custom Ratio 100%. I decided to do some more testing since Sophocles came up with identical results with both of them. I compared the first 10,000 frames of the first episode of a Star Trek disc this time. Both versions from Shrink (No Compression / Custom Ratio 100%) came out the same, but when I compared against the same episode stripped with IFOEdit there were 2 frames (yes - just 2) from those first 10,000 that are different on the Shrink uncompressed backups than in the original stream. I need to do some more testing, but for now you can probably assume my earlier findings were due to a PEBKAC error (Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair) and ignore it.
