Hi all. :)
If any of you is interested in a comparative test (and if you're preferably on a broadband connection)...
http://www.dvdshrink.info/temp/beta/comparative_tests.html
The softwares included were: DVD2One 1.5, IC8, InterVideo DVDCopy 2, and DVD2DVD-R/CCE (2 pass).
There is no official release date for v3.2 Final, but it is expected to be publicly available before the end of the week.

DVD2DVD-R/CCE 8 hoursI did Somethings gotta give which is 128 minutes in under 3 hours using the above.
BTW, only CCE noticeably beat Shrink using the quality settings, IC8, DVD Shrink came close and DVDcopy2 came close> DVDcopy2 was sharper but I thought the color rendering by Shrink might have been a little better. I was disappointed in my old PAL DVD2One but I used 1.4. But remember we're talking about a 175 minute movie with almost 50% compression.
I'm getting ready to do LOR II which is also 175 minutes and a clean film production. I have a CCE back, DVDcop2 back, and a DVD2One back. shrink will be backed on the maximum settings.

Sophocles, I honestly wish I could have done it in 3 hours with CCE.
What processor is your PC equipped with?
Mine is a lowly AMD Ahlon XP1700+. :/
Looking forward to hear the results of your tests.

I wasn't missing I've been trying to test out the new DVD Shrink Beta against previous tests that I've done by using the new quality settings. I'm going to have to try the new DVD2one as well. Damn is there never time to rest.

I have a P4 2.8 @ 3.149 ghz and as you know P4's are better optimized for video compression than AMD's to begin with. But my near double clock speed is enough to explain the difference. I also have 2 gigs of CAS2 PC3200 Corsair extreme memory set with 2-3-2-6 timings. So far the results with LOR III are impressive, but I'm still making the comparison.

Actually it'll be two years old in November but I'm going to build a dual pentium system before January. CCE doesn't utilize hyper threading but it loves two pentium systems, that and with the new high speed 300 gig 10'000 RPM hitachi hard disk and I will get CCE encodes to under an hour.
But yea its been a great system, when I first built I won speed contests.

I can get a good sized movie done in under an hour already.....as long as I use RBFarm to encode on at least 2-3 PCs at once ;) It's amazing what a combination of a 2.4GHz P4, an XP 2500, a Celeron 1.7GHz, and an Athlon 900MHz can do.

You don't see the guy for days on end and then he shows up.
I have three PC's in my house all built by me on ASUS boards. ONe with and AMD XP 2500 Plus overclocked to 3200 Plus with 1 gig of CAS2 PC3200, and a P3 at 1.1 gigs with 512megs of CAS2 PC133. I could do RBfarm but I would lose my family because they belong to my wife and son. A dual Pentiums system will do better than the three anyway and I'll get my hardware fix.

I?m playing the DVD Shrink backup of LOR II as I?m writing this and have been for about 4 hours. It?s a better choice than the previous Shrink backup I made using The Godfather. I compared them and I?ve noticed a gain in picture sharpness, I?d always felt that DVD Shrink?s picture had good color but it was never that sharp. I?ve been swapping discs? over and over again between the original, CCE, DVD2one, DVDcopy2, and Shrink 3.2b4.
Three of them are excellent copies but I?ve detected some minor artifacts in DVD2one and as expected CCE most closely mirrors the original, but then that was expected but DVD Shrink is holding its own against DVDcopy2, Shrinks only disadvantage is its speed. It is worth noting that DVD2one and DVDcopy2 did the job in a third of the time. The picture quality with this movie and version of Shrink is not quiet as soft as I recall in other trials and the color balance on all three are excellent.
For my next tests I?m going to use a little less compression which makes more sense for a transcoder so I?m going to drop my compression to 30%. If anything I was to backup was at 30% or higher I?d use CCE anyway. DVDcopy2 has demonstrated some problems with older movies, for instance it displayed serious artifacts at the beginning of the movie Splash. It seems to have problems with snow or artificial sparkles, things that are in the upper spectrum such as scenes with reflecting sunlight on water but on newer movies it does an excellent job.
These were unedited full backups and the quality could have been improved by using DVDremake and trimming the movie prior to backing it up. I know I?m reaching on this one but I?d like to see the video quality slide bars that are included with Nero Recode or something similar incorporated into DVD shrink. That would allow for one to keep the menu and extras by increasing their compression ratios and allow for less compression of the main movie.
Now back to my tests.
More later

May I ask what viewing equipment you're conducting your tests on?

36 inch Sony Wega and my 22 inch viewsonic P225f. I use the viewsonic for blowing up the picture until it becomes pixeled. My monitor is set at 32 bit color, 1600 by 1200 resolution, at 85 hz refresh rate my TV is my TV. I also have a 32 in toshiba.

Will do.
I have one question actually: have you ever found DVD Shrink "No Compression" to degrade or modify a video stream (color content, sharpness, etc etc)?

Funny you should ask because I was just getting ready to backup to type 5 DVD's. I can't see how DVD Shrink would cause a problem with uncompressed material, especially if I've used deep analysis could you enlighten me a bit?

There is no need to "Deep Analyse" a title when no compression is used.
Its main function is to "evaluate" each frame and to pass the information to the compression algorithm, so as to obtain the best quality possible.
It does it on a frame-by-frame basis, which is why it can take a while and is quite demanding on system resources.
This is also done by the initial "quick" analysis, but on a smaller scale (frames are analysed at an interval).
When "No Compression" is used, the video stream is actually left intact and should be identical to a rip made by any other "ripper" (DVD Decrypter for example).
I was only asking because one DVD Shrink user reported the "No Compression" output to softens the tones.
I have personally never found this to be the case, and neither did others who did "bit-by-bit comparisons" (or whatever it's called).
dvdshrink also stated numerous times "No Compression" does not alter the video stream in anyway.
I'm just trying to get a wider view and understand what the issue could be.

I think that we can put that nonsense to rest. I use DVD Shrink to rip quite often because I can edit unwanted audio tracks during that process without having to think. I don't use deep analysis when I rip either.

Thanks again, Sophocles, if "No Compression" did actually modify the video stream that would have skewed my comparison tests.

Who made the statement? It would skew all of our results. In high compression on large movies the video gets soft but lower the compression then better the results

@ddlooping: I read some similar claims many months ago, and I eventually decided to test this for myself. I made a movie only backup with no compression and used AviSynth's SSIM plugin to compare it against the original. SSIM directly compares the luma and chroma planes from one video stream against a second one, and it couldn't find any differences between Shrink's copy and the original. Just to be sure, I made another copy of the movie with IFOEdit and compared that against the Shrink version. Once again - no differences.
