I have searched for this and haven't found anyone else with this exact problem. I'm not having problems with my backups but with the Swap Magic Disc itself.
OK. I bought the Coder Edition of Swap Magic off of thegiantstore.com which came to me labled as version 3.8. I think this is the same as version 3.6 although I'm not sure.
I got the flip top cover installed it and put the DVD SM disc in, it booted fine the first try and I was playing backups. However, on subsequent uses I've found that my Swap Magic DVD only boots every once in a while. The CD boots every time but not the DVD. I tried adjusting the laser using the little white circle in the back but it hasn't worked. Basically my DVD only boots once every 20 or so times, so I'm constantly resetting waiting for the disc to load.
I did research this a bit on the net and found someone else who said my disc was probably defective. I looked at my disc and it had a little bubble on the very inside plastic piece so I called The giantstore and they sent me a new DVD. It has the same problem except this disc doesn't appear to be defective at all.
Can anyone help me with this? Is there anything I'm doing wrong? The only thing I can think of is that I'm adjusting my laser wrong. I eject my tray. Turn the switch on the back off and tweak with the little gear. I've also tried one guide that said turn the gear all the way to one side and just steadily adjust it. They say to mark it so you know where you are at, except everytime I turn the gear all the way to one side I turn on my PS2 and I can hear it doing something. I look again and it appears to always return back to same place no matter what I try. Is this normal?
Is there anything else I can do to get this DVD to boot consistently and not once every 20 times. BTW, I try booting all of my originals and they all boot the first time no problem and no disc read error. Only this SM DVD doesn't boot

I have the exact same problem. Mine only load about once every 5-10 times so i got a replacement and it worked fine at first now it does the same thing. I thought it might be my laser so i bought of of those DVD(ps2,xbox) laser cleaning dvds and it still does the same thing.

Hey guys.
I had this problem too. Kinda frustrating have to eject and try again 15 times until it works. I have a fix for this, however you're going to need a few things:
-Swap Magic CD
-Original PSX game you don't play anymore
-High TOC original PS2 game (ie. Devil May Cry... any 4.3gb+ TOC)
Private message me if you have the three required things and I'll show you "another way" (which is awesome and works every damn time).
If you don't have that, I find that I can get the Swap Magic DVD to boot up 1 out of 5 times by doing this:
-Turn on system
-Wait until PS2 menu loads
-Insert disc
-Listen while it spins
-At first click (laser movement), eject try and close tray quickly
-Do the same again, at first click (laser movement), eject try and close tray quickly and it seems to load for me 1 out of 5 times. Try again if it doesn't load.
I don't really recommend the above method as that has to put a lot of strain on the drive motor and laser. Pick up a used copy of Devil May Cry (or something with a high TOC) and a shitty used PSX game and send me a private message.
Cheers!

That's funny, I'm having the exact same problem with the SM DVD, except I haven't been able to boot it once yet. I'm not getting "read error", but "no data" instead. All my PS2 games work perfect. I guess I gotta send the disc back as defective and hopefully the next disc will work. Has anyone tested the method that is available through Hewie by PM? I will post the results as soon as I try it.

I got the PM from Hewie as well. Thanks Hewie.
But it seems really complicated so I'm not sure if I will be trying it because I feel i might screw something up. Let me know if you get it working though and I maybe will try it

It's only complicated to set it up, but once it's ready it's simple. If you screw up, it's completely reversible (just delete the file on the memory card) and try again. It doesn't effect your system at all.

me too me too me too..... all original PS2 games boot flawlessly. I have flip top, old ten screw model PS2.
DVD SM disk goes straight to browswer. Funny thing is the browswer recognizes it as a PS2 disk as it gives me options to enter memory card of PS2 disk (gold), when I select the PS2 disk it goes back to the browswer. I have version 3.6 by the way.
On a side note, the SM CD version boots up, I don't have a backup CD game to really play with it though. How do I get the darned thing to stop spinning so I can put in the backup??? I figure this info might come in handy if I ever do get the DVD SM disk to work.

There was a bad batch of DVD 3.6 versions of Swap Magic imported from China about 7 weeks ago some appeard at my supplier.
These have a 1cm ish mark / blemish towards the centre of the dvd and fail to boot most times.
It may be your supplier has some of these as well.

Hewie's method (cogswap) works like a charm. If anyone is still having problems with the Swap Magic DVD, this is an alternative to sending the disc back defective (even if it may not be defective). PM hewie or google cogswap exploit.

Well, the same thing happened to me with 3.6, the CD one wouldnt read every time, i would need to tilt my ps2 to get it to read, but really, the DVD would read. So i really didnt get it, then one day. i tried to load a DVD game (GTA San Andreas) and it didnt load, i tried a DVD, nope nothin. So i think my lasers fried. So i took my ps2 apart... its still half assembled in my drawer somewhere, its fun taking stuff apart.. but putting them back together.. eeeekkk.

the cogswap exploit sounds very easy and good with the fliptop cover, only problem is you have to have a modded PS2 to make the disk to get it to work, which honestly, if we had that, would we really need the exploit? On a side note, I emailed thegiantstore and they replied and said they were sending me a new disk, lets see how that workds out.

sleeper43, you don't need a modded console for the exploit, all you need is the SwapMagic CD to boot it.

I got a quick and probably dumb question.
I'm about to start the cogswap exploit and I want to make sure I have enough room on my memory card. Is there a way I can tell?
