Jan 9, 2007 - Blu-ray Software Sales Surpass HD-DVD
Posted January 9, 2007 by Marwin

Blu-ray software sales have now surpassed HD-DVD for the first time the week of December 24 and they did so by an impressive 20 percent. The sales gap is expected to widen further in 2007 based on research conducted by Twentieth Century Fox and Blu-ray is expected to outsell HD-DVD by a 3.5-to-1 ratio by the end of the first quarter.

One of the driving factors behind the growth in sales is the PlayStation 3 (PS3), which was launched on November 17, 2006 in North America. The PS3 has been selling out at retail outlets since it was launched and despite shortages Sony has been able to meet its target of shipping 1 million PS3s in North America by the end of 2006. What's even more impressive is that they did it faster than their top-selling PlayStation 2 (PS2) platform did when it was launched. Sony is now targetting 6 million PS3 consoles shipped worldwide by the end of the fiscal year (end of March 2007).

While many have doubted the effect the PlayStation 3 would have on the format war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD it's hard to argue with the numbers. Blu-ray sales are up 700 percent since the mid-November launch of the PlayStation 3 and other Blu-ray players from Sony, Panasonic and Philips. According to a recent survey by Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) of over 10,000 PS3 owners, 80 percent indicated they will buy Blu-ray movies and 75 percent said they use the PS3 as a primary device for viewing movies. However, this shouldn't come as such a big surprise as those that have bought the PS3 might as well take advantage of the Blu-ray playback capability, which still is the cheapest Blu-ray player on the market at just $499.

The content advantage that Blu-ray enjoys is another major factor that should become more and more evident now that the Blu-ray exclusive studios (Disney, Fox, Sony, MGM and Lionsgate) are starting to release more titles in the format. When looking at the 20 top selling DVDs of 2006 almost all were released by movie studios supporting Blu-ray, which means that titles such as Pirates of the Carribean and Cars will only be available for Blu-ray. The content advantage should further shift in Blu-ray's favor as the format neutral studios (Warner, Paramount) catch up their Blu-ray release schedules with HD-DVD so that the same movies are available for both formats.

Overall the Blu-ray backers are confident that it's only a matter of time before the Blu-ray format becomes the dominant format in the US market, just as it already accounts for 96% of the market in Japan.

Report warns PS3 stocks may indicate softening demand
16 January 2007 23:22 by Dela

A report shown on Tuesday showed that more than half a group of surveyed stores in the United States had Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) console in stock. "Our channel checks yesterday of 52 retail stores, from boutiques to big-box retailers, showed that 28 of the 52 stores had PS3 consoles in stock, while none had Wii consoles in stock," American Technology Research analyst Paul-Jon McNealy said in the research note.

He noted that most of the stores had just 1 digit figures of stocks while only one had more than 60 units on offer. With supply shortages of the console lasting since its mid-November launch, many have interpreted the available stocks as being a sign of slowing demand for the console.

However, Sony spokesman Dave Karraker dismissed this belief by claiming that the company is airlifting more than 100,000 units to North America weekly. "It isn't because demand has weakened, it is because we have kept the supply pipeline moving," he said.
If you go to any pro-Blu-ray website, do you expect they'll claim to lose the format battle. 8/

I'm a member of both netflix and blockbuster online and i'll let you in on something they have always had blue-ray but now there are so many people after them that each one has a long wait. Sony sent out a Trojan horse and thats the ps3. If your in a store after you own a ps3 and you see a $500 hd player are you going to buy it? Hell no your going to take your money and buy a nice blue-ray dvd to play on your ps3.

Hd has no future Blu-ray does. Blu-ray just can do more and hold more.

Blu-Ray has surpass HD-DVD in a month thanks to the PS3

Thats not true there is no 100% correct proof usually Blu-ray site says we are leading while the HD-DVD sitey says the same bout them selves while wiki is just some mumbo that could be made up by a supporter of that certoian format.

and i hate to burst your bubble sony will not give the porn industry rights to blu ray so they can only produce porn on HD-DVD disks not only will this affect the industry of adult entertainment but force adults to purchase HD-DVD

so you might want to rethink that

I am not impressed at all by the way Blu-ray looks.I expected it to blow everything away but so far in my opinion it hasn't.I do like the way HD-DVD looks.Much more vivid colors and better sound on HD-DVD.

umm, no, you should have just left that as "Trojan." does nobody remember when they royally feckled the consumer with XCP not too long ago? screw sony, they've done too much damage to be forgiven.

i'm going to humbly agree to the superiority of HD DVD. better format all the way around, from the evidence i've seen.

Riddle me this, what was the last "war" Sony has won? They have a history of bungling up their proprietary formats and I doubt with Blu-ray it will change. They should have gone the Xbox 360 route and had the addon to cut the ridiculous cost. $600 to watch movies and play games, I don't think so. Also before you call me some other company's fanboy I currently use the PS2.

I own all systems that have ever come out.I just don't see what the big deal is with Blu-ray. They hyped it out to be the best format but in my opinion HD-DVD looks alot better and sounds much better.

I am for HD-DVD, although it has its downfalls compared to Blu-ray I want to point something out.

Using a PS3 to watch movies is stupid from the start. It may have the capability to do so but I would strongly advise against it!

A laser, regardless of its quality, has a limited amount of life in it. The Blu-ray/HD-DVD laser is small, about 2/3 the size of the DVD laser. I am not sure if this affects its lifespan at all, but, I am assuming it does.

If your using your PS3 as a Blu-ray player, then your PS3's life is going to be shorter, possibly way shorter. I know I used my XBox 1 a lot as a DVD player, its drive is now basically dead (after only 4 years of owning it and I took very good care of it). It now only occationally will read DVDs (pressed ones) and hardly ever reads XBox games. The drive is also very loud when its working due to it wearing out.

The bottom line? Don't use your PS3 as a Blu-ray player, unless you want to only be able to use it until 2011.

This is wierd I like HD-DVD,Hate Bluray,Like sony,Hate Microsoft,Like Nintendo ha wierd.
But Trust Me on this if you bought a Blu-ray Player comparing it to the Ps3's built in one would make the buil in one look like a garbage tin I know this from past compare early Ps2's dvd player to then a (2000) $600DVD player.

wow... like i said b4 unless games come out on hd dvds then ppl should stop comparing them to bluray in the console forum. so stop saying bluray is unecessary on the ps3 when its the most important cuz games are bluray...hd dvds on the 360 is pointless cuz games arent on them.

PS3...it only does everything(that Sony allows it to)

Sony didn't go this route because when they tryed it(PS2) they got ripped to no end and i was on the fore front with this. But now when Sony has a complete system they get ripped.Sony can't win its dam if they do ,damm if they don't.Sony said Blu-ray was going to be the makeup for this system 3 years ago.Now people have a problem with it.I don't know a single PS3 owner that dislike his PS3 after he got it.If your going to dump 200.00 on a HD-DVD add-on your paying the same price as a PS3 but you getting more than what the 360 is offering you.I get tired of people bashing a system & don't own it nor have they even had time with it.

Microsoft: Ps3 cant do 60fps on 1080p. Guess what they were WRONG!!!!!
(11/19/05 - 9/19/06) Microsoft: Sony's 1080p support on PS3 is all Hype and Not Needed.
(9/20/06) Microsoft: Xbox 360 to add 1080p support.

Guess this whole thread should be closed, then, seeing how it started with mjp_80 posting movie info in the console forum.

And actually, using Blu-ray for games is the ps3's bottleneck.

As soon as Oblivion launches, we'll report back with exact load time statistics for comparison with the Xbox 360 version. This will give us the first real comparison between the Xbox 360 and PS3 load times. Of course, it could be argued that the PS3 version contains more data, and thus will load slower regardless.
They don't even have a final copy of Oblivion....lol

Quote:
One of the ways around this slow loading time is to enable a one-time install of many of the game's assets onto the hard drive of the PS3. In the case of Genji it decreases load times from 12 seconds to 4 seconds, which is a significant improvement. However, if you buy and play a lot of games, that may lead to some troublesome data management, as even 60GB drives may seem small after installing a few dozen games. Who wants to install their console games anyway?
I think he brought very creditable info to the table BUT !
Why would it be a problem just deleteing the game that your not using off your HD.60 gig is alot of space & there isn't a game out yet that put over 500kb of game data on your HD.I got like 8 games 12 albums 5 dvd rips on my HD i'm only at 45gig.

I've said this in another thread, but I'll repeat it here. The idea of a 50 gig disc is great, but not for gaming right now. Sony needed to spend a little more time on it. We're not going to see any benefits of that extra space if developers have to double and triple the files on a Blu-ray disc just to get faster loading times.

The problem is the Blu-ray drive can't read fast enough. BobbyBlu is right, we can just delete the unused files from the hd if space becomes a problem.

I could have told you this 4 mounth ago! HD-DVD is the next beta max! WOOT!
I wouldn't be to sure, huge names including Microsoft are promoting HD DVD. Verbatim (They make one of the greatest quality burnable disks known, with only TY's beating them in my opinion.) has created both HD DVD-Rs and BD-Rs.

Sony, may I remind you, created BetaMax. Like any other HUGE company, they have their noses high in the air. They didn't learn from the BetaMax mistakes.

I just found an older article (January 2006) right here on Afterdawn that says "Porn company backs Blu-Ray". A large reason why VHS won was due to the fact that adult film users had to purchase VHS players to enjoy the adult films, which sold $14 billion worth from 2001 to 2006. Thats just under $3 billion per year.

Well, an article published here on Afterdawn stated that "Joone...wanted to provide content on Blu-Ray" which is what was mentioned in January of 2006.

"But...Sony had issued a warning to any company who produces pornographic material on a Blu-ray disk would lose the Blu-ray license."

This means that Blu-ray is the next Betamax. No adult films on Blu-ray means that about $3 billion per year from content published exclusively on HD DVD, due to Sony disallowing the content on Blu-ray, will be made by HD DVD supporting companies and give them a HUGE boost.

Peace
