HOW to backup WII GAMES.(guide)

This article is aimed at someone that has not followed the modding scene for the Nintendo Wii and wants to be caught up in one quick de-briefing. The contents of this file could become outdated very quickly because the modding scene is exploding right now. I will do my best to keep it updated so if you see the date is really old shoot me an email and I will update it or at least say that nothing really revolutionary has happened in the modding scene. Click below to access the tutorial on backing up your Wii ad Gamecube discs. Remember that to play the backups you will need a modchip! The modchip is rapidly changing and I will be outlining this in my next article which is due sometime later this week.
First step in copying your games for backup purposes is to get the right software and hardware. You will need one of the following DVD drives to copy games(no others will work). I received a pm that some people were having trouble locating the drives. Newegg no longer sell these drives for some reason.

Personally I have the 8164b and have had zero problems. I'm sure the others are fine also.
Once you install this drive into your computer you will need to download a few applications.
*Raw dump 2.0
.net Framework 2.0
* Software to unzip the Raw Dump files.Winrar
Once you download the files above then right-click on the rawdump2.0.rar and select "Extract to rawdump2.0\"
this will make a folder on your desktop called rawdump2.0.
Now insert your Wii or Gamecube game into the LG drive that you have ordered and installed. Then open the rawdump2.0 folder and double click on the rawdump2.0.exe file.
After doing this you will be presented with the following interface. If your wondering what all the buttons are next to me close and minimize buttons it is a program called UltraMon for multiple monitor setups. Just ignore this. I am also running the Zune Windows XP Theme.
The next step is to just click "Start Dump." On my computer this process took just about 2.5 hours. When it is complete you will be greeted with a nice finished message. The file it creates will be in the same directory as the rawdump.exe file. It should be called "Game Name.iso." This ISO is an image of the actual game and is ready to be burned. You can burn this image with many different applications, but I will be providing screenshots for Nero Burning Rom.
This step is very important. You need to check your file and see how many KB large it is. To do this Right-Click on your iso(this is in your rawdump directory) and select properties. It should say,
Nintendo Wii ISO size: 4.37 GB (4,699,979,776 bytes).
Nintendo Gamecube ISO size: 1.35 GB (1,459,978,240 bytes)
All Nintendo Wii and Gamecube images will be this exact byte size. If your Wii image is off by any then you have a bad dump and need to try again.
So next step is to open Nero.
The first step once nero opens it to just cancel out of the create new dvd/cd/etc dialog. Once you have exited from this dialog you go to Recorder->Burn Image.
After making it this far you are almost done. When you click burn image you will be asked to locate the image. The image will be located in your Rawdump2.0 folder. For me, this is on the desktop.
Select the game that you have dumped with rawdump and click open. You will then be presented with the below dialog. Make sure to select a relatively slow burn speed at first to attempt to prevent DRE's(Disc Read Errors). These seem to be common among people that do not use high quality dvd's. Awesome, thank you for posting.
2.5 hours per game is still quite a bit.

What about for burning the games? Do you need one of those drives or would it work in any DVD writer?

Thanks for the info. I wasn't exactly sure where to download the framework....
It was my understanding that the games would be burnt on dual layer discs. The LG drives you listed are just regular DVD-RW right... I was planning on purchasing a dual layer drive specifically for burning Wii games, is it not needed? Are original Wii games dual layer? so essentially when we backup games, the data must be getting compressed and we lose quality right?
As far as chips go, I'm waiting to see what new chips will be on the market in the near future. There's a buzz about this WiiXT chip, do you think it's real? I hear there's a lot of problems with the CycloWiz at the moment. I just got my Wii 4 days ago so chances are the chip is not even compatible with it. Do you guys know of any new chips to be released? ....

It was my understanding that the Wii games are on Single layered DVDs, look at the backup sizes they are all under the 4.7 limit.
As for chips, the CycloWiz is good but the thing is that it makes the Wii read disc at 2X instead of the normal 6X and that causes some games to not work as good or at all. They where going to have an update to fix this but to update you need to install a switch on the chip and mod the actual Wii case(something I don't want to do). The new chip called the WiiKey is coming out in the next few days and is suppose to basically be just like the CycloWiz but better, this is the chip I plan on picking up and all new chips support new Wiis. The newer Wiis have A D2B chipset which is not supported by first run wiinjas or cyclowiz but both chips have a version 2 out that do support it.

I have ripped the games and they have come out to the correct size. Have Cyclowiz installed but when I put the backup in it comes up with system error - eject disc and restart unit. Any Ideas????
I have a working backup that i downloaded so its gota be something my end...
Using rawdumper 2.0 on Vista

I've heard of a system error being cause by burning the game at a fast speed. Apparently the CyclyWiz makes your console operate at 2x rather than its regular speed of 6x. So try to re-burn your game on good quality media at no more than 1 or 2 times speed.

Thanks for the reply... I only burn at 2 or 4 speed max ..... its only the games I have ripped that wont play..............arrrghhhhhhhh...........lol

Oh yeah whats the difference between the GDR-8164BB & the GDR-8164BK?
Is it just the color difference? Like BB is beige and BK is black?

you have to use Raw dump 2.0 to rip the data. You should be able to use any software of your choice to create the iso and burn...

hey, ive got my ISO's from rawdump and all but now i cannot figure out how to burn it, ive read the guide with nero/clonecd to burn it but when i did that i just get an error message that wii cannot read the disc and it needs to be restarted and to check the trouble shoot/instruction manual(im using wiinja v2).
Over on the wiinja forum,people have been telling me for Sony DVD+R discs i need to set ''booktype''. I do not know what that means. They also said i had to ''flash'' my drive and i have no clue what that means because I have a Sony DW-U14A 2.0e
Anyone help me out? should i keep trying to use Sony DVD+R's or just go with -R's

I read that you can play Wii backups off of an external HDD, you just leave it in the ISO format. Does anyone know if this is true?

Dude, you name the model number LG-8164B, but the link returns model GDR-8164BB....
And its ONLY $17.99!
Is the GDR-8164BB the right one? (or perhaps a black model?)

thank you bunny C .. I have just ordered the LG drive.. I would like to ask one thing..I am sorry I can not find any info on this... so before I assume that it will work...let me ask... can you use any dvd burner as long as you set it at the correct speed?... thank you for all answers..
