apparently i AM a genius as i have done what everone else who has backed up games has done and that is READ READ and you guessed it READ some more, some people just feel they should be spoonfed the information or maybe you would prefer someone to come directly to your house and show you in person, point is if you're in a forum when the title of the thread says " HOW to backup WII games " USUALLY the answer is in the beginning of the thread and not posted everytime someone asks for it. So if you really wanna "beat the time searching" read from the beginning

Hello folks,
I am all new to the impressing Wii community - got mine at last weekend from eBay (sold out in the stores around...)
so, I already ordered my WiiKey and this should arrive soon!
The one thing I am wondering is:
I indeed do have one of the supported read-capable drives (GDR 8163something)
BUT: I also own an XBox360 and therefor have a modified firmware on exactly this 8163 (the one needed to make XBox360 backups, I believe it's version 0.81)! (BTW: I actually can use this drive normally, not only to backup 360 games)
- can I still use this drive together with rawdump2.0 to make working Wii backups or do I need to install an official firmware first?

dred1080;
Go to Newegg.com and search by external DVD burners. Any one should work. It appears you need one of the DVD readers listed in the irst post to read the game. But any DVD burner should work to burn the game.
At Newegg, look for one that has a lot of 4 or 5 star reviews.

Hey guys, I understand how to do everything here on a PC but was wondering if I could do this with a laptop? Say if I where to get this laptop: http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddet...0084023&catid=#
would I be able to get a external drive for the LG DVD-Rom and burn the image with the DVD RW in that laptop or would the burner not work?

Thanks to OP. Everything works out well,i got everything done in 3 days. This is what I have:
wii with wiikey
LG GDR-8164B
DVD burner in HP laptop (I don't know who's the manufacturer)
Verbatim DVD-R, burning at 2x
Rawdump 2.0
So far i backup 3 games, Zelda/SSX/Trauma Center, they all load up with no problem.
Can anyone comment if I can make LG DVD as external USB drive? I don't want to keep a desktop just to dump image. I want to work everything off my HP laptop.

@SPiercey, you would need to buy one of the drives linked in the tutorial, one of the LG ones, and buy an external 5.25" drive enclosure to plug the drive in with a USB cable, cheap ones can be found on eBay. Then you need any DVD burner to burn the games.

I burnt my first backup last night, dragon ball, and it's the same, nothing shows up but I don't have my WiiKey yet to check it(should be here this week). But if I put the actual copy of the game into the burner it doesn't show anything ether so I guess it should be fine.

Did you install the .Net framework 2.0? Try installing it a=again if you did.

Using the LG drive. It will not show the files like ps2 or such. But as soon as you open up raw dump, it will read it then. That doesnt mean its not there or a bad burn. Thats just how it is.

Buy one of the drives listed and buy a 5.25" drive enclosure, you put the drive in and hook it up to the drive enclosure and then hook the enclosure to the laptop with a USB or Firewire Cable.

I got my WiiKey today and just installed it successfully by luck. Everything work fine and I have no problem to play my backup game which was done by following the instruction at page 1.
The Wiikey is a tiny piece of chip, so I strongly recommended to install it with wire. Though I did install it without wire by luck but it is probably the most difficult task of the year for me.
Recommend to use the professional installation service if it is your first time to install the chip.
Taking off the case and assumable it back is another difficult task too. The following link has the detail steps and pictures for how to take off the Wii console case.

Wish everyone good luck!

I noticed that playing backup games, the system is much louder and vibrate a lot more than playing with original game, it is more quite and does not vibrate.
Is it the wiikey problem or the DVD media (I use verbatim DVD-R)?
Anyone has this issue with extra loudness and vibration playing backup games?
